Data Collection How do you determine the data’s accuracy? All data regarding the primary certificate and certificates of added qualifications status of a physician, as well as the participation status in maintenance of certification, is data generated solely by the ABFM and is considered primary source information. The ABFM also maintains in its data base other information including but not limited to medical schools and residency programs attended as well as fellowship training obtained; this data is gathered directly from the physician or the residency program. How do you know that the data are current? The ABFM updates its file of currently certified family physicians on a daily basis. Periodic events, such as the issuance of new certificates, occur throughout the year and are updated as soon as new information is available. Given the continuous nature of certification it is recommended that an annual verification or re-verification of certification status takes place on February 15 of each year. 5.
