1. Organization Description
The American Board of Family Medicine, Inc. (ABFM) is one of twenty-four member boards of the American Board of Medical
Specialties. ABFM is an independent non-profit organization. The mission of the ABFM is to improve the health of the public through:
(1) certifying family physicians who are highly skilled and effective in improving the health of their patients, (2) setting standards for the
training of family medicine residents, (3) conducting research to advance the scientific basis of family medicine, (4) cultivate leaders
within the specialty of family medicine, and (5) collaborating with other organizations to promote better health care. As part of its
mission the ABFM maintains a national data base of board certified family physicians.

3. Data Pricing
ABFM’s certification status reporting service is designed to allow organizations to verify that an individual is a board certified family
physician. The addition dates of certification and the status of a physician in MOC is included in the Verification + service. Based upon
key fields, the query will return certification status information including maintenance of certification participation and the existence of
any certificates of added qualifications.
Pricing is pre-paid in blocks and based upon volume as follows:

4. Data Collection
How do you determine the data’s accuracy?
All data regarding the primary certificate and certificates of added qualifications status of a physician, as well as the participation status
in maintenance of certification, is data generated solely by the ABFM and is considered primary source information. The ABFM also
maintains in its data base other information including but not limited to medical schools and residency programs attended as well as
fellowship training obtained; this data is gathered directly from the physician or the residency program.
How do you know that the data are current?
The ABFM updates its file of currently certified family physicians on a daily basis. Periodic events, such as the issuance of new
certificates, occur throughout the year and are updated as soon as new information is available. Given the continuous nature of
certification it is recommended that an annual verification or re-verification of certification status takes place on February 15 of each
year.
