Key Design Components of the World's Largest
Electrical Project: The Panama Canal
MWH is the lead engineering company in the design JV for the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks
Project, the largest component of the Panama Canal Expansion Program. The $5.3 Billion
Expansion Program is being undertaken by the Panama Canal Authority, the owner and
operator of the Panama Canal on behalf of the Government of Panama. Commencing in 2007,
the Program is currently scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015, with operation
commencing in 2016. The Panama Canal is being expanded with new locks that bypass the
existing locks to provide access for post-Panamax vessels that are too large to pass through the
existing locks. The new post-Panamax ships are capable of triple the capacity of the largest
vessels that can currently transit the canal.
MWH is designing the new locks systems under a design-build contract. Design is over 95%
complete and construction has progressed to the 65% complete level. The first lock gates have
been transported to Panama from Italy, and electro-mechanical equipment is now being
installed. This presentation will provide a general background of the project, a status update
with current construction progress photo’s, and will focus on some of the features and
innovations of the electro-mechanical power and control systems.
