Dear Parents and Participants,
The weather has certainly been wacky the past week with temperatures fluctuating above and well below the freezing
temperatures. Hoping to see the onset of Spring very soon and no more weather related cancellations of our workshops.
Here is fourth newsletter for the 2013-14 academic year. Last month we did have a cancelled workshop due to bad weather
and that workshop will now be conducted on March 22nd, 2014. We had another workshop from 2013 that had to be
accounted for and that will be done by adding an extra hour for the two sessions (March 15 th & March 22nd) held in the
month of March. Please note that these two sessions (Mar. 15th & March 22nd) would be three hour workshops.
The start and end times for the workshops during the month of March along with the details of the activities have been
listed in the previous page. Beginner level participants will be working on fruit batteries and Static Electricity on March
1st and will be introduced to Lean Manufacturing Principles and Computer Animated Programming on March 15th and
March 22nd. Lean Manufacturing activity (building Lego mini-jets and Lego race-cars) is one of the most enjoyable
activities in the NIU-EEP program and so parents of beginner level participants, please ensure your daughters do not
miss out these sessions. Advanced level I participants will get to explore electronic playground sets and start to work on
their LED Mini Flashlights and sew a LED bracelet. For the LED mini Flashlight, parents please send in one
Altoids empty box with your daughters this Saturday without fail. I need to get the holes drilled and keep them
ready for building the flashlights on March 15th, 2014! Advanced Level II participants who got to explore the Arduino
Programming, will get to experience designing a video game for a mobile phone in the next few workshops after March 1st,
2014. These activities will continue next year as well, with a major project embedded tying all what was learnt this year in
Advanced Level II!
2014 Summer Camp registration packet and details will be made available by the mid of April 2014. Camp dates and camp
theme for this year are listed in the next section of this newsletter.
Have a nice weekend and see you all tomorrow!

Are you interested in Evolutionary Biology? If yes, then go to…
TIMELINE THEATRE, CHICAGO!
NOT TO MISS! – “THE HOW & THE WHY”
A smart and compelling new play about science, family, and survival of the fittest.
Two women meet for the first time on the eve of a national conference. Both are brilliant evolutionary
biologists who share a zeal for science and a bold, contrarian approach to their male-dominated field—even
as one challenges the other with a radical new theory that may change the way people regard sex. As
mysteries unfold about their relationship, the two scientists clash over differing views on evolution, feminism
and generational divides in modern America.
