India is full of Solar Energy. Solar thermal & Photovoltaic
are two routes of taping energy.
Photovoltaic makes sense where electricity is required for
lighting & power applications
Solar thermal is viable where fuel oil or electricity is being
used for heating & cooling applications
Technologies in promotion in India include :
 Solar water heating systems
 Solar air heating systems/ Driers
 Concentrating Solar Technologies (CST)
• CST models are finding good market after achieving
success in low temperature technologies

Recommendations
• SWHs is a commercially viable technology & do not require any
financial support except loans in some cases. All models work
satisfactorily.
• Among CSTs, Dish cookers may have good market in smaller cities &
towns facing difficulty in getting LPG. NGOs & local entrepreneurs
could take initiative.
• CSTs for community cooking & process heat applications may be
installed in cluster to reduce cost & O&M problems after
identifying some manufacturers
• Some successful projects need to be demonstrated & publicized
through video films to develop confidence among potential users
• Mirror is the crucial part of CSTs. Quality needs to be ensured
through standards & performance guaranty given by manufacturers
• Information tools e.g Toll free helpline, newsletter, video films &
dedicated website are very useful for promoting ST devices
