WP1: modernization of
conventional counters
• new CPUs installed for all counters, new preamplifiers installed at 9 counters, further
implementation according to requirements
• counting wires have been replaced for 12 counters.
=> further replacements according to requirements
• ongoing operation for six selected ICOS stations:
(Cabauw, Trainou, OPE, Mace Head, Jungfraujoch,
Heidelberg)
• 318 analyzed samples in 2013
WP2: database development and
integration in ICOS
• database structure for AMS samples finalized and
running in test mode
• automated coupling of AMS and CRL database
• test of the „ICOS-CRL APP“
for bar code reading and
für
database interaction…
WP3: Sampling strategy and test of
the CRL pilot station
• different sampling strategies are
currently assessed using modeled
GHG time series
• diurnal vs. nocturnal sampling in
Heidelberg -> first seasonal cycle
completed
• ongoing comparisons between sodium
hydroxide solution and whole air
integrated samplers
• initial tests of a second, more robust,
integrated whole air sample seem
promising
WP4: Design of a flask extraction and
AMS target preparation line
• design finished, parts ordered, assembling has begun
– 4-fold extraction, 12-fold graphitization
– ongoing comparison of conventional counting and
AMS analysis using an existing target preparation
prototype

Summary
Conventional counting:
• modernization of conventional counters mostly finished
• all counters functioning
• modernization of conventional sample pre-processing has begun
AMS analysis:
• building the AMS preparation line shall be finished by the end of the year
• ongoing comparisons between both techniques are established
Database:
• database design for AMS samples finished, currently tested
• database acquisition for conventional samples is planed for the end of 2014
14C
sampling strategy and test mode:
• the development of sampling strategy is slightly delayed, intensified now!
• test mode running smoothly
