Sailthru CTO, Ian White, to Present on the Evolution from Application-Level
Sharding to Autosharding at MongoDB World 2014
Sailthru infrastructure solution, made possible via Mongo-Connector, resulted in zero
downtime and improved performance as databases rapidly scale with ecommerce and
media client growth
New York City - June 24, 2014 - Sailthru, the only customer interest-based automated
personalization platform, will be at MongoDB World 2014 for CTO and co-founder Ian
White to present on the company’s unique migration from application-level sharding to
autosharding via Mongo-Connector, a tool created by MongoDB interns in 2013 to move
data across sets.
Sailthru, a read-heavy and write-heavy software application has been a MongoDB
customer since 2009. The company maintains 120 replica set nodes on metal
infrastructure processing 40 TB, and 25,000 writes per second. Primarily working with
ecommerce and media brands, Sailthru maintains over 850 million user profiles, 75
million products and URLs and delivers over 2 billion emails, SMS messages and push
notifications each month.
“When we started working with MongoDB we were able to partition our data by client
with application-level sharding but we were quickly handling too much data. Application
sharding helped with our performance because there were smaller indexes due to
collection partitioning, yet we ran into problems with uneven load distribution, limited
single server capacity and the time-heavy need for manual rebalancing and allocation,”
said Ian White, Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder, Sailthru. “With MongoDB,
they’re always a step ahead and since MongoDB 1.6 we’ve been able to leverage
autosharding. Autosharding makes Sailthru more scalable than ever before -- we can
select a shard key and a key collection and let it run. The trick was evolving from
application sharding to autosharding with no downtime, which is where MongoConnector came in last summer. Mongo-Connector allowed us to pipe data into
autosharded clusters with zero downtime. We can also use it to pipe data into alternate
data stores such as Hadoop and Solr.”
Come hear Ian White present on the process of evolving Sailthru’s infrastructure from
application-level sharding to autosharding at this year’s MongoDB World, the largest
gathering of the global MongoDB database community. His presentation will dive into
best practices for autosharding, how Sailthru’s database team found success with
Mongo-Connector through additional improvements and what to look out for that can
indicate your business needs to look at approaches to sharding more critically.
