Ian McAlpine OBE DL Ian was born near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, in 1942, and educated at Oundle School, Northamptonshire, and Cambridge University, where he studied engineering. He subsequently joined the family construction company, Sir Robert McAlpine, where he spent the whole of his working life. In 1967 he married Caroline, and during the early years of their married life they moved house several times, as Ian worked on a variety of construction projects around the country. In 1973, they moved to Peatling Parva, Leicestershire, when Ian became Director responsible for the company’s construction operations in the Midlands Region. He retired from executive duties in 2002 and is currently non-executive chairman. During his career, Ian served as Chairman and the President of the Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors, President of the Lighthouse Club, (the construction industry benevolent organisation), a director of the Construction Industry Training Board, and a construction industry representative on the National Economic Development Organisation. He was also Chairman and then President of the Blaby Conservative Association. He was awarded an OBE in 1995. Ian served as High Sheriff of Leicestershire in 1998/99 and was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of the County in 2001. He has been Chairman of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation, and is currently vice Chairman of Governors of Oundle School, and a Trustee and Director of the National Space Centre, Leicester. Ian has a son and a daughter, both married, and five grandchildren. He also has a dog and four llama!
