Course Description
This course is designed to further develop the basic skills to communicate with
deaf and hearing impaired individuals using American Sign Language. The course
is a survey of principles, methods, and techniques of manual communication using
American Sign Language. The vocabulary, grammar, finger spelling, numbers, and
terminology will provide a framework for using basic sign language.

Instructor Biography: Mrs. Lisa Boyd graduated from Union County College in Cranford, NJ with a
degree in Sign Language Interpreting. She has worked as a professional interpreter for over ten years
within the school system in New Jersey and now in Baltimore, Maryland. She is passionate about
interpreting and would love to help participants become confident in the advanced use of sign language.
Mrs. Boyd has also instructed TALKING HANDS I: AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE for two semesters.

Civil Rights and the African American Experience
This course will give a brief overview of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement focusing
primarily on local grassroots movements. It will also cover African-Americans and
their relation to the constitution and how it affected later civil rights legislation.

Instructor Biography: Ms. Iya Osun Wenmimo (SHEENA BLACK) is a performing artist,
choreographer, and instructor of modern dance and jazz. She is a graduate of Morgan State University
BA, Sociology (Honors: Alpha Kappa Delta). Ms. Black studied modern dance based on the Dunham
Technique. Ms. Black’s training focused on body awareness, placement and kinesiology (The study of
anatomy, physiology, and mechanics of movement). She was a member of Images of Cultural Artistry
Dance Company, that was directed by the late Dr. Sherrill Berryman Johnson of Howard University in
Washington, D.C. Ms. Black attended La Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba; it is renowned for
the study of African folkloric traditions.

Instructor Biography: Nilajah M. Nyasuma earned a master's degree in Human Services from Lincoln
University and a doctorate degree in Urban Educational Leadership with a concentration in Administration and
Planning from Morgan State University. Dr. Nyasuma has over thirteen years of professional experiences in
education and human services. She has experience planning, coordinating, and producing educational and
special events. Having recently planned her own wedding, Dr. Nyasuma truly understands the importance of
planning a beautiful ceremony and reception on a tight budget.

TAI CHI INTERMEDIATE
Participants will further explore fundamentals of an ancient martial
art practiced around the world as an effective exercise for
health. Tai Chi consists of fluid, gentle movements that are practiced in a relaxed and slow tempo. It is an exercise that can be

Instructor Biography: Stanley Jenkins began martial arts training at an early age in Shorin Ryu Karate and
soon matriculated to the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. He began formal training in the Chinese martial art
known as Yang style Tai Chi Chaun in 1996. This discipline was unlike any martial discipline that he had studied
before in that it involved gentle, yet martially precise movements and maneuvers. Based upon his experience with
the martial arts, Mr. Jenkins offers his gifts and talents to humanity for the benefits of: psychological, physical,
moral, and spiritual health & wellness.

TRADITIONAL HERBALISM
Course Description
This course will cover an introduction to historical uses of herbal medicine for healing the mind, body, and spirit. Participants will explore
herbal uses ranging from teas and cooking, to healing cuts/wounds
to treating hypertension, to spiritual cleansing, and uplifting. Emphasis will be placed on herbs from Africa, but western herbs from the
USA and South America along with eastern herbs from India and China will also be discussed. Additionally, the course will allow the student to learn safe and practical uses of herbs to prevent disease
and to treat common everyday issues without resorting to over-the-counter drugs. Lastly, it
will shed light on herbs that have the ability to create emotional and spiritual balance.

question - How do I start writing a book? Students will learn
not only how to start the book that they’ve wanted to write,
but how to finish. Additionally, participants will learn strategies for overcoming writer’s block, finding his/her voice, and
