Although an element of risk will always be present
in such a sport/activity the following can be
pursued in an attempt to control risk:
 Ensure that ice skates are adequately sharp
 (IMG to monitor)
 Ice marshals permanently on rink with public
to:
Assist fallen skaters, ensure one direction of
skating is maintained (anticlockwise), alert medics
to injured skaters, ensure skaters are not skating
recklessly/offer skating advice to beginners. Keep
ice free from any objects/equipment, static/non
static items and debris not associated with general
ice skating conditions that may cause skaters to
fall resulting in injury.
 Professional medics permanently at ice rink to
deal with a range of injuries. Minor to major.

There will
always be an
element of risk
involved with
the activity of
skating.
However ice
skating is the
primary activity
of the ice rink.
Therefore
making it
impossible to
remove the
hazard/risk
totally.
Risk not adequately
controlled. Activity of
wheelchair users and
able –bodied skates
together not safe due to
not being able to Keep
ice free from any
objects/equipment,
static/non static items
and debris not
associated with general
ice skating conditions
that may cause skaters
to fall resulting in injury.
Due to this risk
separate
skating sessions
are
implemented
for wheelchair
users. See
auxiliary
documentation:
NHM Wheel
Chair Skating
sessions.
