June 29, 2014 - First Christian Church

June 29, 2014
WELCOME TO
FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH
On behalf of FCC, we want to extend a warm
welcome to you and your family this morning.
We’re glad you’ve chosen to worship with us!
Whether you are a first-time guest today or
already part of our church family, our hope is not
that you would find perfect people or a perfect
building; our hope is that you are drawn closer
to our Perfect God. During our service you’ll
experience worship in a number of ways: through
song, Scripture, giving, prayer, fellowship, and
study. But through it all our focus is on the one
who makes all things possible–Jesus Christ!
JUSTIN WHITE Senior Minister
If this is your first time
here, thanks for joining
us! Stop by Guest
Connections and pick

about the church.
The folks at Guest
Connections at the
Lafayette Ave. or
Fifth St. entrances are
happy to answer any
questions you have or
point you in the right
direction.

It helps us out when you fill out an attendance card found in the pew and place it in
the offering basket as it is passed.

additional questions
about the church or

OPEN PRAYER
Chapel
July 10 at Noon
The prayer team will be leading a time of Open Prayer in the Chapel on Thursday, July 10.
Everyone is invited to attend as we offer prayer to our Mighty God and Expect God to move
boldly in this church, this city and the world.
What joy for those you choose to bring near, those who live in your holy courts. What festivities
await us inside your holy Temple. You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds, O God
our savior. You are the hope of everyone on earth, even those who sail on distant seas. You formed
the mountains by your power and armed yourself with mighty strength. Psalm 65:4-6

happening at FCC this fall and have fun! Be sure to mark your calendars.
Kid.nect (K-4th Grade) -Friends serve each other.
We are learning what the New Testament letters say about Friendship - treating others the

saw how Galatians 5:13b teaches that relationships aren’t all about just us.

OPENING HYMN “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To His feet your tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Evermore His praises sing.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King!
Praise Him for His grace and favor To our fathers in distress;
Praise Him, still the same as ever, Slow to chide and swift to bless.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious in His faithfulness!
Fatherlike, He tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame He knows.
In His hands He gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Widely yet His mercy flows.
Angels in the height, adore Him; You behold Him face to face.
Saints triumphant, bow before Him; Gathered in from every race.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace!

COMMUNION HYMN “He Leadeth Me”
He leadeth me! O blessed thought! O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be, Still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.
Refrain: He leadeth me, He leadeth me; By His own hand He leadeth me:
His faithful foll’wer I would be, For by His hand He leadeth me.
Lord, I would clasp Thy hand in mine, Nor ever murmur nor repine,
Content, whatever lot I see, Since ‘tis Thy hand that leadeth me. Refrain
And when my task on earth is done, When, by Thy grace, the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee, Since God thro’ Jordan leadeth me.

DECISION HYMN
“Lead On, O King Eternal”
Lead on, O King Eternal, The day of march has come;
Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home.
Thro’ days of preparation Thy grace has made us strong;
And now, O King Eternal, We lift our battle song.
Lead on, O King Eternal, Till sin’s fierce war shall cease,
And holiness shall whisper The sweet amen of peace;
For not with swords’ loud clashing, Nor roll of stirring drums,
With deeds of love and mercy The heav’nly kingdom comes.
Lead on, O King Eternal, We follow, not with fears;
For gladness breaks like morning Where’er Thy face appears.
Thy cross is lifted o’er us; We journey in its light.
The crown awaits the conquest; Lead on, O God of might.

*We welcome Vanessa Edwards, Violinist to our worship service today. Vanessa
recently celebrated 25 years with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic as Violinist and CIP
Production Coordinator. She is also the Education Director for the CIP which includes
teaching strings in our schools, bringing in guest clinicians, and directing the Youth
Orchestra. Vanessa enjoys playing with her mom (organ) at her home church, New Zion
Methodist Church, playing in the Handbell Choirs at First Baptist Church, and playing here
with us at First Christian Church. Vanessa has two children and recently became a “grand”
mother. Welcome Vanessa.
**Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of sacred choral music that originated in the
American South. The name is derived from The Sacred Harp, an historically important
tune book printed in shape notes. It’s distinctive American style developed over the period
1770 to 1820 from roots in New England, with a significant, related development under
the influence of “revival” services around the 1840s. This music was included in, and
became profoundly associated with, books using the shape note style of notation popular in
America in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Sacred Harp singers view their tradition as a
participatory one, not a passive one. Those who gather for a singing sing for themselves and
for each other, and not for an audience.
Ecclesiastes: Life Under the Sun
Dealing with Aging
Justin White, Senior Minister
When people live to be very old, let them rejoice in every day of life. But let them also remember
there will be many dark days. Everything still to come is meaningless. Ecclesiastes 11:8
What is wrong cannot be made right. What is missing cannot be recovered. Ecclesiastes 1:15
Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth
before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.” Remember him before the light of
the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky.
Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble; and before your
shoulders—the strong men—stoop. Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining
servants—stop grinding; and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see
dimly. Remember him before the door to life’s opportunities is closed and the sound of work
fades. Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint.
Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets;
before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy
like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him
before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.
Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and
the golden bowl is broken. Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley
is broken at the well. For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God
who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:1-7
Solomon shares 3 ways to age meaninglessly:
1.
When people live to be very old, let them rejoice in every day of life. But let them
also remember there will be many dark days. Everything still to come is meaningless.
Ecclesiastes 11:8
2.
Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by living a godly life. Proverbs 16:31
3.
For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave
it. Ecclesiastes 12:7
And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years
to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool!
You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’
Luke 12:19-20
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being
renewed every day. 2 Corinthians 4:16
