Q: How can I receive information about the program?

Q: When is the application deadline?
A: All application components must be received by February 1st for fall admissions. We only admit student’s
for the fall semester.

Q: Where should I mail my application packet?
A: All application materials must be sent to the School of Graduate Studies, instead of the Department of
Communicative Disorders. Please have your application packet (including: transcripts, letters of
recommendation, GRE scores, resume and paper application if applicable) sent to:

Q: What should I include in my graduate application packet?
A: The following standards and materials are required of all masters and certificate applicants regardless of
program. All materials should be mailed to the School of Graduate Studies.

1. A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Degrees from nonaccredited institutions will be evaluated on an individual basis.
•If admitted, a final transcript must be sent to the School of Graduate Studies upon completion of
undergraduate material. If you have not completed your bachelor’s degree before applying to our
program, you must send a final transcript after graduating with your bachelor’s degree.
2. A completed application form (can apply online or mail in paper application).
3. One official transcript from every college or university where the applicant has taken courses, except for
previous course work at ETSU. Applications will not be considered without all transcripts.
4. A non-refundable application fee of $35 ($45 for international students).
The following are specific requirements for application to the Communicative Disorders master’s program in
Speech-Language Pathology (these should still be mailed in packet to the school of graduate studies):
5. A personal essay of 150-300 words, detailing your interests in a graduate program at ETSU.
6. Prerequisite coursework
7. Submission of Quantitative, Qualitative, and Analytical writing score of the GRE. There is no minimum
score necessary.
8. Resume
9. Three letters of recommendation from previous professors, which evaluate the student’s academic abilities,
communication skills, and interpersonal capabilities. Please submit all recommendation letters on ETSU’s
recommendation form (http://www.etsu.edu/gradstud/documents/forms/recommend.pdf)

Q: What are ETSU’s ASLP undergraduate course requirements in speech and hearing?
A: Coursework needed for conditional and unconditional admission consideration to the Speech-Language
Pathology Program includes:
1. A minimum of three (3) credit-hours in the biological sciences.
2. A minimum of three (3) credit-hours in the physical sciences.
3. A minimum of three (3) credit-hours in statistics.
4. A minimum of six (6) credit-hours in the behavioral and/or social sciences that include study that
pertains to understanding normal/abnormal human behavior, development across the lifespan, social
interaction, and issues of culturally diverse populations.
5. A least fifteen (15) credit-hours in basic human communication processes with at least two (2) credits
in each of the following areas of speech, language, and hearing: the anatomic and physiologic bases; the
physical and psychophysical bases; and the linguistic and psycholinguistic aspects.
ETSU’s ASLP undergraduate minor in Speech- Language Pathology offers the following courses only online in
the area of Speech and Hearing:
Communication Sciences and Disorders
3 credit hours
Speech and Hearing Science I
4 credit hours
Anatomy & Physiology of the Speech & Hearing Systems
3 credit hours

5. At least twenty-five (25) clinical observation credits under the supervision of an ASHA
-certified professional.
Q: What are my options if I don’t have an undergraduate degree with a major or minor in Communicative
Disorders?
A: ETSU offers two semesters of pre-requisite coursework in speech-language pathology solely online. You
would register as a non-degree seeking special student, using the undergrad course. Then you would apply for
the 2-year graduate program.

Q: Are there multiple tracts to receive a master’s degree of Speech-Language Pathology?
A: Our 2-year program is for students who have an undergraduate major or minor in communicative disorders
that includes all our pre-requisites. Additionally, there are opportunities available for teachers working as
speech-language pathologists in the state of TN without their master’s degree to complete the program on a
part-time basis.
Financial assistance may be available from the TN Department of Education.
Q: Is ETSU’s program ASHA accredited
A: Yes. The master's (MS) education program in speech-language pathology at East Tennessee State University
is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the
American Speech-Language Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard #310, Rockville, Maryland 20850,

Q: How do you prepare students to become Certified ASHA clinicians?
A: The course work and clinical clock hour requirements are designed for the student to obtain the ASHA
Certificate of Clinical Competence and licensure. In addition to building a strong academic foundation, students
also gain a diversity of clinical experiences in medical and educational settings for both adult and pediatric
populations.
Q: Do you offer an M.S., M.A., or M.Ed. in CDIS-SLP?
A: We offer a Master’s of Science degree in our ASLP program for Speech-Language Pathology.
Q: Do you have a doctoral program available in Speech-Language Pathology?
A: We currently only have a Master’s program of study in the field of Speech-Language Pathology or an AuD.
(Clinical Doctorate) Program in Audiology. We do not currently have a doctoral program in Speech-Language
Pathology at ETSU.
Q: Is a thesis or dissertation required?
A: A dissertation is not required, yet a thesis or capstone literature review is necessary to complete the program.
Thesis Option for the Master’s Degree
The thesis option is offered in speech-language pathology to provide students with the opportunity to
develop and execute a research project with mentoring by their faculty committee. Guidance is given by
the faculty advisor through all phases of a research project. The thesis requires a considerable
commitment to writing and independence in meeting deadlines and should be undertaken with advice
from the faculty.
Non-Thesis Option for the Master’s Degree
The non-thesis option for the Master of Science degree in Communicative Disorders includes (1) a
written literature review, and (2) an oral presentation of a clinical case.

Q: What financial opportunities are available to Speech-Language Pathology Master’s students?
A: Full tuition scholarships and graduate assistantships are available for approximately
50% of graduate students through the Department of Communicative Disorders, which require departmental
assignments ranging from 8 to 10 hours a week. Numerous campus-wide tuition scholarships and assistantships
are also available to students.

Q:What is the cost to attend ETSU?
A: To be considered a full-time graduate student (9 credit hours) the fees for the 20142015 academic year are as follows:
9 credit hours-12 credit hours
In-state:
$4,475.50 - $5,065.50
Out of State:
$11,234.50 - $12,877.50
For instate tuition, residents include those living in the state of TN or in the following counties:
•North Carolina: Ashe, Avery, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga, Yancey
•Virginia: Lee, Scott, Madison

A: The average incoming class size is typically between 23-28 students.

Q: What college is your program located in within ETSU?
A: The College of Clinical & Rehabilitative Health Sciences.
Q: Where is the Audiology Speech-Language Pathology department located on ETSU’s campus?
A: The department is located on the 2nd and 3rd floor John P. Lamb, Jr. Hall (#19 on ETSU main campus map)
on the East Tennessee State University main campus. A visitor parking pass for the day may be obtained from

Q: Does ETSU assist students in finding CFY (Clinical Fellowship Year) placements?
A: While we do not place our graduate students in their CFY, we are able to provide guidance as student’s
search for their CFY.
Q: Does ETSU offer an on-campus daycare program?
A: Yes, ETSU has an on-campus daycare facility, Little Buccaneers. The facility is open Monday through
Friday from 7:45 – 5:30 and serves children 3 months to 5 years of age.

Q: What recreational activities are available in Johnson City, TN.?
A: Johnson City is located in the mountain and lake country of southern Appalachia close to the state lines of
North Carolina and Virginia. Area recreational activities include boating, snow-skiing, white water rafting,
fishing, and hiking. Many outdoor recreational adventure programs are available through ETSU’s Center for
Physical Activity.
