CTE 2014-15 - Bellevue High PTSA

CTE - CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER
Welcome back to another wonderful year of exploration and discovery. Career and Technical Education courses provide
the opportunity for students to learn technical skills, earn high school and college credit (also referred to as Tech Prep
Credit) while attending their home school. Other programs are also available through CTE such as our WaNIC programs
and our Skills Center programs. Below you will see the many opportunities available through Career and Technical
Education. If your son or daughter is currently enrolled in a CTE course, make sure you take advantage of the college
credit available to them at a fraction of the college tuition cost.
WaNIC programs were established to provide advanced-level Career and Technical Education programs based on rigorous
academic and industry standards. The courses are designed to prepare students for post-secondary education and
successful entry into high-skill, high-demand careers and employment. WaNIC courses are two-hour blocks and are eligible
for college credit with a “B” or higher grade. Some of these WaNIC courses are available within Bellevue School District,
where others are located within the North Shore or Lake Washington School District. Please check the WaNIC web site to
view program offerings, locations, and other valuable information. www.wanic.org . If you have specific questions
regarding WaNIC, please feel free to contact your high school Career Specialist.

Donna Mattison, Newport High School– 425-456-7400
Ortansa McDonald, Sammamish High School– 425-456-7600
Skills Center courses also fall under the WaNIC umbrella but these courses are three-hour blocks rather than the two-hour
block. They are also available within the Bellevue, North Shore, and Lake Washington School District area. Here is a list of
the course pathways through WaNIC.

Tech Prep College Credit through CTE
Students in the Bellevue School District who take CTE courses are eligible for college credit through Bellevue, Shoreline,
Edmonds, and Lake Washington Institute of Technology—depending on where the agreement has been articulated. These
articulations are college accredited courses and are not affiliated with Bellevue School District. CTE teachers have been
endorsed by the college to teach the very same course in our high schools that college students are currently taking at our
local college campuses. Therefore, if your son or daughter takes a CTE course and earns college credit, they must work
with the corresponding college to have transcripts sent to whatever college or university he or she plans to attend. High
schools do not keep college transcripts!
Some parents have asked if these credits have any “real” value. The answer is “yes”. Students who take the course and
earn a “B” or higher earn college credit and can use it as an elective credit or as a credit in their area of study. Remember,
all universities and colleges have specific guidelines, therefore, please check with your local college or university. Here is a
new list of all the courses available through Bellevue School District with the course number and the college providing the
credit.
To sign up for this opportunity you must:
1. Be currently enrolled in a ‘Tech Prep’ CTE high school class.
2. Register for the Tech Prep program while you are in the class (www.techprepcc.org)
3. Pay the $46 annual consortium fee. (This is a one-time fee of $46 for as many courses as you can complete in one
school year.)
4. Receive a grade of “B” or higher in the class.
