Introduction
At the 2013 meeting of the Historical Group of the National Union Of Track
Statisticians (NUTS) I volunteered to draft up and maintain a register of
resource materials that may be of use to researchers active within our sport.
They may be engaged in work on their own club, a specific athlete, a general
aspect of the sport or a governing body.
They may be from outside the sport but are looking at our sport and its
contribution to their area of interest.
The current content is meant as illustrative and not definitive.
The maintainer of the “register” should be just that. I do not see them acting as
the “researcher” to investigate and provide the detailed content of an entry.
This must come from others and have provenance. It will be down to you the
reader to help this register get populated.
The exact format and content of information held will evolve and will need to be
refined regularly.
What Do I Want You To Do?
In this draft you will find a number of things in italics and highlighted in yellow.
This is where I want your specific input and contribution. The biggest
compliment will be if you respond and tear it apart but also provide additions &
corrections!
This document is a crude ‘start’. I want you to read it and spot all
errors/typos/omissions/duplications etc and report them to me. Action

I welcome any suggestions both to the information to be maintained and to any
collections that you are aware of not mentioned. Action

When you send me information please be as specific and detailed as possible.
I would also like you (i.e. every member of the NUTS Historical Group), if willing,
to provide a detailed definitive statement of each of the projects that you are
working on so that these can be included. Action
Register Objective
To provide a reference document for all those interested in the history of the
sport of athletics in Great Britain, Ireland & the Channel Islands.
The scope of their interest may be a passing enquiry about a family member of a
detailed request for information into a specific club or event.
It aims to list the major known resources and sources of information that exist
that may help someone with an interest in our sport.
It should include any practical help in using the resource. That may include an
assessment of the quantity, quality and range of information. Any techniques and
observations that can be used when accessing the resource should be provided.
These may be such things as the “best time to visit”, “techniques” used when
querying the material etc.
Action – The above is an attempt at defining what the objective is. I am not
happy with it! Please review and suggest ways of improving it.

I plan to group the resources into “types”.
This is an initial attempt at defining a range of “types”. This will change as
contributions are received and issues arise.

This draft delivers this in a simple “summary” format for debate, discussion and
to invite contributions.
It may be that, if the amount of information that is available makes this format
unwieldy, a single page per entry format (containing the same data) may then be
a better alternative.

I suggest that the register initially aims to primarily cover only the UK, Ireland
& Channel Islands scene.
Question – Do you agree?
There are a number of other aspects that merit consideration:Coaching
Fiction
Memorabilia Collections
Officiating
Politics
Question - Should we include material relating to these aspects? It could be
limited e.g. to eras where manuals contained histories of the discipline and
photographs of certain notable athletes/officials.
The register would include overseas resources with significant British content.
Availability
I would suggest that the “register” only be made available primarily via the
NUTS Website. Paper copies could be generated as/when required.
Assumption – It is not intended to publish this in paper form
Question – Thoughts?
There may need to be two “flavours” of the register. One that contains the
information that can be widely published and another which contains restricted
information, such as names, addresses etc, may be held within the “master”
register but not published.
Question – Thoughts?
It may be that, in time, the register is published in separate sections for ease
of use and maintenance.
This might also lend itself to future sharing of the maintenance across a number
of individuals.

Content Maintenance
The document would be maintained by a nominee within the NUTS Historical
Group. This position and person would be reviewed annually.
Changes to (new additions, updates etc) should be emailed as/when they arise to
the maintainer of the register.
He/she may also circulate a request for updates/verification at a predetermined
frequency e.g. every three months.
He/she would then (re)issue this to the webmaster for publication as necessary.
In addition it should be tabled annually as an item on the NUTS Historical Group
Annual Meeting and possibly also at the NUTS AGM. This I see as providing a
more structured update on all projects.
Question – Thoughts?
The document is currently maintained in Microsoft Word 2003/13 and
circulated as a PDF.
Awareness & Promotion
Whilst there are a number of people within NUTS who will have much
information to add to the project there will be some outside the membership
who also should approached/consulted.

One area that could be of significant use would be a simple listing of athletic events. This would help the novice by showing
when events took place and could provide a starting point for their lines of enquiry.
As a rookie researcher I would have welcome the existence of this to allow me to begin searching local newspapers for
traces of my clubs activities.
I would see this as potentially listing all:





National Championships
Area Championships
County Championships
Open Meetings
League Fixtures
International Meetings

Key Administrative Dates (e.g. AGM’s)
A start could be achieved very quickly if everyone in NUTS could extract from their own electronic data sources a simple
