Which are the advantages/benefits of HIPERFACE DSL®?
HIPERFACE DSL® is the only digital motor feedback protocol, which only needs 2 wires. These can
be integrated into the motor cable therefore no additional cable for the encoder is necessary.
The following functionalities and features are supported:




high dynamic and high resolution position regulation
safe motion
condition monitoring
highly integrated compact drive concept

Is a special HIPERFACE DSL® cable needed?
No!
A standard servo motor cable (4+2+2) can be used.
4 x motor power, 2 x brakes, 2 x DSL
A winding temperature sensor can be transmitted by DSL. For the data pair (2xDSL) an
impedance of 110 Ohm is specified (see whitepaper).
All bigger cable manufacturers offer HIPERFACE DSL® compliant cables.
Is a special connector necessary?
No!
A standard Intercontec M23 or M17 with 9pins can be used (see whitepaper).
How can HIPERFACE DSL® be implemented?
The DSL-master is integrated into the FPGA of the drive control system. SICK supplies the IP-Core
(VHDL code), which the customer has to integrate to the frequency converter application. Both
(DSL-application and frequency converter application) can be stored in one FPGA-chip.
Page 3
Is there a license fee?
There is a one-time fee for the HIPERFACE DSL® master of approx. 800,-EUR it can be used as
often as desired. Potential updates are free of charge.
What does the HIPERFACE DSL® IP-Core do?
Automatic synchronization to the control cycle.
The IP-Core (intellectual property core) codes and decodes the communication to and from the
DSL-encoder. It stores synchronous to the control cycle the measurements (position and speed).
Additional information (e.g. winding temperature, histogram data) can be accessed through the
IP-Core as well. In case of an interruption in the communication the IP-Core calculates/estimates
the possible position measurements (estimator).
Which cycle time can be realized with HIPERFACE DSL®?
The controller receives every 12,1 µs an updated position value. Alternatively a control cycle of
64µs,or 125µs and others can be used.
Is there a product roadmap?
In the near future all performance levels will be available (similar to the HIPERFACE product
portfolio)

Which support does SICK offer for the implementation?





Worldwide support by the SICK Drives&Control-Team and national/international PM`s.
Homepage with current documentation, video-tutorials and reference customers.
Free of cost documentation (user guide, data sheets, white papers, benefits-Flyer).
DSL-Starter KIT which contains all necessary accessories (TP2=718,-EUR).
Contacts to FPGA, cable and connector manufacturers.
What is the price for HIPERFACE DSL® encoders compared to HIPERFACE
encoders?
The price for a comparable DSL version is approx. 20,-EUR higher based on the same sales
quantities.
