Seed gifts from friends and family of Dr. J. Stanley Cummings and matching funds provided via Title III
grant were provided to endow a perpetual scholarship in honor of Dr. J. Stanley Cummings. Dr. J.
Stanley Cummings dedicated twenty-five years of his professional career to Springfield Technical
Community College, serving as Director of Financial Aid, Development Officer, Professor of English and
Founding Director of the STCC Cooperative Education Program. Dr. Cummings’ tenure at STCC was
marked by his commitment to ensuring that students have optimal access to innovative technical and
liberal arts education. His work with faculty led to the positioning of STCC as a nationally recognized
technological institution, competitively receiving grants from the National Science Foundation, the
Economic Development Administration and the Department of Education, as well as private corporations
and foundations.
Dr. Cummings’ worked in the early 1970s which led to the emergence and strengthening of new College
programs and services. Through the 1980s and until his retirement in 2002, Dr. Cummings was
instrumental in advancing STCC’s mission in Technology, Engineering, Business, Health, and Nursing.
The scholarship will be awarded based on meeting or exceeding the following criteria:




The award will be made annually at the STCC Pinning Convocation to a student who has
been successfully admitted as an associate degree nursing major at STCC.
Said student must demonstrate financial need
Must have completed at least 24 credits with a minimum 3.0 average prior to receipt of
this award.
The award will be made by competitive application of students who meet the above
criteria and as recommended by one or more members of the STCC Nursing faculty.
This year 1 scholarships of $250 will be awarded.
