Endoscopic Neurosurgery Workshop

Dear Colleagues,
We are honoured to invite you to participate in our 13th Workshop on Endoscopic
Neurosurgery at the Holiday Inn Ghent in Belgium, November 12, 13, 14 and 15, 2006.
We offer you a hands-on training in the application of endoscopic instruments, for a broad
spectrum of indications. There will be interactive teaching video’s and discussion on operative
techniques. We will demonstrate the organisation of the operation theatre and the role of the
instrument nurse. During the course there will be practice on phantoms and on anesthetized rats
with full equipment of all instruments, video, laser and bipolar coagulation. There is a complete
installation per two participants.
Please find further information in this brochure.
Looking forward to meet you there.
Sincerely yours,

WORKSHOP DIRECTOR AND GUESTSPEAKERS
WORKSHOP-DIRECTOR : Prof. Dr. J. Caemaert
Prof. Dr. Jacques Caemaert is the head of the
department Neurosurgery, University Hospital Ghent
in Belgium and director of this course.
In 1986 he designed a neuro-endoscope that meets
all criteria for an excellent neuro-endoscope (after 7
years of clinical experience and 5 successive
prototypes). Recently a DVD has been constructed
as a digital users manual, containing a detailed
description of the instrument, its application in the
theatre and a number of typical indications illustrated
by video.
INVITED SPEAKER : Prof. Dr. J. A. Grotenhuis
Prof. Dr. J. A. Grotenhuis is the head of the Neurosurgical Center UMC St. Radboud, Nijmegen in
the Netherlands.
His special interests are: training, education and scientific research, minimally Invasive
Neurosurgery, instrument development, endoscopic neurosurgery, surgery of the hypophysis and
cerebrovascular surgery.

RECEIVE A FREE DVD: “ENDOSCOPIC NEUROSURGERY”
DVD: ENDOSCOPIC NEUROSURGERY
Endoscopic Neurosurgery is accepted worldwide as a valuable tool in minimally invasive
neurosurgery. Since 1986 prof. Dr. J. Caemaert from the Ghent University has designed a
neuro-endoscope that was realised by the Richard Wolf Company Knittlingen (Germany) in
close collaboration with the Richard Wolf Company Drongen (Belgium).
After seven years of clinical experience and five successive prototypes, the actual instrument
meets all criteria for an excellent neuro-endoscope.
This DVD has been constructed by Prof. Dr. J. Caemaert en Dr. F. Dewaele as a digital users
manual containing a detailed description of the instrument, its application in the theatre and a
number of typical indications illustrated by video.
After completing your training on the hands-on workshop, you will receive
a free copy of this digital users manual.
SOCIAL PROGRAMME
As a social programme, we bring a visit to the city Ghent on Tuesday 14
November. Ghent is a sparkling city of culture. You will hardly ever find such
a diversity of architectural styles and treasures of which some are protected
as national heritage. A city embedded in the Middle Ages when Ghent was,
next to Paris, the second largest town. Unlike other towns, Ghent has the
unique and stirring combination of a glorious past and a vivid present. Here
pounds the young heart of a dazzling city of culture full of music, theatre, film
and arts.
After visiting Ghent city by night, we bring
a visit to the St. Bavo’s Cathedral. It is the
oldest parish church in Ghent, built in
French High Gothic style. The cathedral is
very impressive with its tripodal space for
chancel, transept, choir aisle, and circular
chapels. The Cathedral has a wealth of art
treasures. One of those world famous
treasures is the painting by Jan van Eyck:
“The Mystic Lamb”. It is considered to be
one of the artistic masterpieces in Belgium.
It is also considered to be one of the most
influential and beautiful paintings of the
Middle-Ages – an absolute must!
Finally, we have a banquet in the famous Belgian
restaurant “Het Pand”. This impressive building has
recently been renovated as the cultural center of the
university Ghent.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Belgium “Ghent” – the ideal location – Http://www.gent.be
Ghent is the fourth largest city of Belgium with about 250.000 inhabitants. The city has an extensive public
transport network serving the city centre and surrounding area.
It can be no coincidence that Ghent, the capital of East Flanders, was given several pretty names: historic
heart of Flanders, a city of all times, one of the most beautiful historic cities in Europe. For some people Ghent
is the real diamond of Flanders and Belgium.
The city combines an impressive past with a vivid present. Numerous tourists visit Ghent of which the citizens
carry the nickname "stroppendragers" or noose-bearers and use the extensive accommodation possibilities.
The historic heart of the city offers a lot of places of interest. From St Michael's bridge there is a wonderful view
on the skyline of Ghent with the three impressive towers of St. Nicholas' Church, the Belfry with its bell tower
and St. Bavo's cathedral with the world famous painting "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Jan van Eyck.
Traces of the Middle Ages were preserved at a lot of places. Ghent also has several museums, abbeys,
beguinages, dozens of churches and historical buildings.
Not only art lovers but everyone can find something here to suit his taste. Ghent offers a lot of shops,
restaurants and an exciting nightlife. Ghent can be discovered by boat, carriage, bicycle or on foot.
How to be reached
Ghent is situated at the intersection of the motorways E17 and E40 and can easily be reached by car. National
and international trains stop in Ghent (stations Sint-Pieters and Dampoort). Many international flights and
trains arrive in Brussels. Ghent is about a half hour away by train from the Belgian capital and trains are
regular and plentiful.
Food
Belgian people certainly have one thing in common, their love of good food. Belgium is world-renowned for its
Burgundian culture of gastronomy. This is the home of french fries, Gentse waterzooi, beer (a), hotch-potch,
