Rik Achten is currently head of the radiology department at the Ghent University Hospital
in Belgium. Already during his training in radiology, he was fascinated by magnetic
resonance (MR), and he had his initial MR experience and training with Prof. Ole
Henriksen in Hvidovre Hospital in Copenhagen in 1986. He started the MRI department
at the Free University in Brussels in 1987, in the Unitas Clinic in Pretoria in 1989, and at
the Ghent University Hospital in 1990 where he works as neuroradiologist since that time.
Many research projects and participations have resulted in over 100 A1 publications. He
served in the board of the University Hospital Ghent for 4 years and is currently elected
member of the medical council of the Ghent University Hospital and director of the Ghent
Institute for Functional and Metabolic Imaging. He is also the promoter of I-Brain, a local
initiative to bring brain science to the general public. He is trained in managing complex
situations typical for large organization and has an open-minded positive view of the
world in general and off the importance of MR in particular.

Ghent University, Belgium.

Elected member of the Medical Council at the Ghent University Hospital,
Belgium (2011-present)

Promoter of I-Brain (www.i-brain.be), an international festival on brain
science. Every year since 2010.
