PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Ka nui te mihi kia a koutou
Whenever I introduce myself to an audience I always start off by
saying; I am Nicola Ngarewa and I am very proud to be the
Principal of Tamatea High School. I tell people I have the best job
in the world. Every day I get to work alongside young people and
play a small part in their lives and the special things that they will
go on to achieve and become. I am privileged to be a part of every
experience, the good and the challenging.
I have the best job in the world where at the end of each year I can sit down and look at a long
list of the academic, sports, cultural and artistic achievements of our students, staff and
community combined. Probably of most significance to me personally is I get to see and hear
of many precious moments that show as a community that we are staying true to our vision of
‘growing good people for a changing world.’ We are helping and challenging each other,
competing, encouraging and sharing; diverse young people creating a family within their
school.
I would like to thank all the students, staff, families, extended families, groups and organisations
who have believed in our young people.
This time of the year is also a time to acknowledge, celebrate and farewell members of our
family who are moving on to another phase in their lives.
On that note I would like to acknowledge Mr Graeme Lister who has given an outstanding 33
years of service to this community. An increasingly rare and precious gift who has not only left
his mark on our walls but in the hearts and minds of many.
To our year 13 cohort; our Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputies, prefects, and other year 13 students;
thank you all for the contributions you have made to make us who we are. You have done
yourselves, your families and your school proud.

PROUDLY LEADING MODERN AND INNOVATIVE LEARNING
Hawke’s Bay United Nation Model
This authentic experience was hosted at
Tamatea High School this year with close to
100 students from throughout the region
attending to actively participate and learn
the responsibilities and pressures of the UN.
It was a well attended event where the
knowledge shown was both just and
appreciated.
Trades Academy Prizegiving
EIT hosted the Trades Academy @ EIT Prizegiving as an acknowledgement of the significant work
that our Trades students put in over the year. All of our students who completed a course were
awarded a certificate with an Excellence certificate going to Jess Bennett, the only girl in her all
male building course.

International Students Farewell Dinner
At our annual International students farewell dinner we once again had the opportunity to share
stories and international meals with our students, staff and host families. At this significant
occasion we farewelled Saravanee (Bell) Phiansamoe who has been with us for four years, she
returns to Thailand to begin her studies at University. We also bid farewell to Henry Xiang who is
originally from China, who has been with us for two years.
We wish both of these students all the best in their future endeavours.
Scholarship to China
During the holidays I was privileged to be part of a
Principals’ delegation to visit North and Southern China. It
was an amazing cultural opportunity to visit schools,
universities and the Minister of Education of China. We
have some exciting proposals and connections to further
develop leading into 2015.

SPORTING SUCCESS
On Friday September 19 all Sports Coaches, Managers and support staff were invited to a
banquet hosted by the Sports Department and catered by the Senior Hospitality students. This
was a special evening and a great opportunity to acknowledge community members, staff and
students who have supported our sporting development and success throughout the year.
A sincere thank you to all involved for your commitment and energy.
Ahuriri Rugby Prizegiving
Recently we held our inaugural Ahuriri Rugby Prizegiving. Students’
families and coaches were treated to hangi, guests from the Magpies
rugby team and the Ranfurly Shield! Our Captain, Anaru Hubbard
Walters was awarded ‘Player of the Year’.
These are rugby teams and players to watch in the future.
FURTHER SUCCESS
Spirit of Napier Lions’ Club
Young Achievers’ Award
Congratulations to Bennett Aifai, our Head
Boy, who recently received a Young Achiever
Award from the Spirit of Napier Lions’ Club.
Bennett has shown his leadership through
the many sporting roles he has taken on this
year, playing, coaching and managing sports
teams.
Bennett has been a mentor for our junior
students as well as playing an important role
in promoting participation and involvement in
the school.
Junior Diploma Reward Day
As our senior students began their external examinations our junior students were either
celebrating their successes to date or having intensive workshops to accelerate their learning
progress.
Those who were able to gain sign off from all of their subjects to date enjoyed a day of food, fun
and laughter at Inflatable World. The second to last reward day of 2014. The final Junior
Diploma Reward day will be held at Splash Planet in the last week of
term 4. Junior students need to ensure they are on track with their
studies aiming for merit and excellence endorsements and attending
homework centre if necessary for extra support.
