A Heartfelt Thank You & Welcome Aboard!
A s I reflect back on my term as President of
Temple Solel, it has been an extremely rich and
rewarding experience for me. I continued to be
amazed about how caring, warm and engaged we
are as a community. When I reached out to you to
ask for something, you were always there and
willing to help.
I would like to thank our fantastic and dedicated Officers and
Trustees who serve on our Board. It was my pleasure to be
associated with such an outstanding group of leaders who are
so very passionate about our community. To those Board
Members who are rotating off of the Board, we offer a very
special thank you. These outstanding Board Members
collectively have provided 27 years of Board leadership to our
community. Please join me in expressing our gratitude to Liz
Bell-Zinn, David Boninger, Mitzi Krockover, Karen Owens and
Roger Robinson.
We have accomplished much in the past year with our many
taskforces and committees actively engaged in the work set
forth by our strategic plan, identifying new ways to keep us
engaged. Then there was our magnificent implementation of
our solar energy project, embracing our Jewish values of
Tikkun Olam. Soon, we will enjoy a newly renovated kitchen!
I
am humbled to step into the position as Temple
Solel President for the next two years. Thanks so
much to outgoing President Robert Danoff for his
service and dedication. As mentioned at our
recent annual meeting, I have big shoes to fill
because Robert has done such a stellar job. I am
thankful that we will continue to work together moving
forward to ensure continuity in our congregation.
Over the next two years, we will have some pretty amazing
opportunities to work together to celebrate milestones and
create legacies. Here are three general areas to start our
conversation together as we approach Temple Solel’s fiftieth
anniversary: education, engagement and endowment.
Education: You will soon hear about creative and exciting
ideas coming out of our education reimagination task force
headed by Ann Malofsky. The ideas coming out of our task
force will help us unlock and refresh religious education.
Our work at Temple Solel is not done, but I know that with our
extremely talented new officers and trustees that we are in
very good hands. We welcome Andy Abraham, Sharon Bricker,
Julie Knoller-Schwartz, Richard Lamden, Rae Rader and Steve
Slogoff to the Board. I want to congratulate Randy Udelman
on becoming our next President and know that he will do an
extraordinary job!
Then there is our clergy and staff. I would like to thank them
for all that they do for us and, trust me, it is a lot! They have
again stepped up in the absence of an Executive Director and
taken on added responsibilities, keeping everything running
smoothly and efficiently. With our clergy and our staff, we are
truly blessed to have one of the greatest teams, working every
day to elevate us to new heights.
I would be remiss if I did not thank my beautiful family for
their incredible support throughout my term. And my final
expression of gratitude is to you, my Solel family, for allowing
me to serve as your President during the past two years!
Thank you!
Robert Danoff
Immediate Past President
Engagement: Look for enthusiasm and energy coming out of
our engagement task force soon. Headed up by Lisa Banen,
you will hear about how an engaged congregation can
transform our community to an even more enriching place.
Endowment: The Temple Solel Endowment Foundation
headed by President Richard Lamden has done a stellar job
building forward toward a solid financial future. Stay tuned for
details about how you can play a part in this legacy building
process.
These are just a few topics coming up over the next few
years. In the meantime, lets work together asking the
question, “How can we elevate Temple Solel to a place
where our children will be proud of this legacy created by
some forward thinking people who dared to dream big in
1966?” Together lets dare to dream big over the next few
years. Thank you.
Randall Udelman
Temple Solel President

We Need to Know…
Please inform the Temple Solel office when a family member or friend is in the hospital. Too often
we find out about illnesses, crises and hospitalizations long after they occur. This is a missed
opportunity for visits from our rabbis and calls from the Caring Community as well as other
assistance offered by the temple. We need your help in order to offer ours.

Cantorial Soloist’s Message
ummer’s here and the time is right, for
dancing in the streets... or singing with the
choir! Yes, while it might seem far away,
my thoughts are already turning to the
holidays. Every year, our choir at Temple
Solel comes together to inspire and uplift
our High Holy Days services. This year, the group will be
getting together beginning on July 30th. We typically
rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm in
the sanctuary. We are fortunate to be accompanied by the
very talented John Massaro (founder of the Phoenix Opera
Company). We are a very relaxed, down-to-earth bunch of
folks who enjoy singing, can carry a tune and enjoy
harmonizing with one another to create some very special
music. Some of us read music better than others, but we
all have a good time learning and singing together. If you
think you’d like to join us, please drop me an email at
[email protected] and let me know. There are no
formal auditions, and as always we are especially looking
for guys with low voices.
If you’re not a singer, but are looking for other ways to get
involved in community, I am also already in the planning
stages for the 2nd Annual Desert Gathering Jewish Music
Fest. The event will take place on Sunday, November 2nd
from 3:00-7:00 pm at Steele Indian School Park in
downtown Phoenix. This year’s headliner will be the
acclaimed Grammy nominated singer-songwriter, Peter
Himmelman (www.peterhimmelman.com). I am looking
for volunteers for the planning process in areas like
marketing, logistical planning, vendor recruitment, kids

I’d love to have you on board with what I know will be a

And don’t forget that Temple Solel does not close down

A Tree Grows
in Solel
The purchase of a leaf on Temple Solel’s Tree of Life
provides a special way to commemorate a
life-cycle event, while at the same time providing
needed funds for our children’s religious education.
You have probably noticed the inscribed leaves, each one
reminding us of a special Simchah or thought celebrated
by a temple member or organization. These leaves
can be purchased for $180 each. All funds are
used to support various Temple Youth and
Education Programs.
A leaf has been purchased:
In honor of the bat mitvah of Rachel S. Dickman
From Curtis and Celeste Dickman
In honor of the bar mitzvah of Alexander S. Dickman

The Solel Preschool
Every Friday, we come together as a preschool
community for Shabbat. During our spirited
Shabbat celebration, we always pause to say
the shema. The shema prayer, which comes
from Deuteronomy, says “and you shall teach
them [the mitzvoth] to your children.” It has
been heartwarming to watch the teachers and
staff impart Jewish values to our preschool children, which
promote caring for each other, the environment and the
community.
One mitzvah that was at the center of our curriculum this
year was the mitzvah of Shmirat HaGuf (caring for your
body). The Solel Preschool was privileged to participate in
the Arizona Department of Health Services Empower
Program. The program helps early childhood educators
implement healthy habits in the classroom to teach
students about living healthy lives. The teachers and staff
met throughout the year to evaluate our current practices
and set new goals to support our healthy habits initiative.
We incorporated physical activities into our daily routines
and taught children about healthy eating by offering
nutritious snacks. Helping children develop healthy habits
embodies the mitzvah of Shmirat HaGuf.
The children participated in various tzedakah (charity) and
chesed (kindness) projects throughout the year. We
collected nonperishable food items and water bottles for
the Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, which
offers a safe place for homeless young adults in our
community. The children contributed money to the
tzedakah boxes in their classrooms and gave the donations
to various organizations, such as the Humane Society and
the Crisis Nursery. It is extraordinary to see how our youth
are making a difference in our community!
We wish all of our families a wonderful summer vacation
and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in
August!

A Vision of Dreams and Inspiration
I
nspiration—it can be found anywhere. For
centuries, poets have been inspired by
everything from encounters with nature, to
drama on battlefields to global events. In
modern times one need only log on to any
social media site to find inspirational quotes or
reflections that inspire us to never give up, keep smiling or
follow our dreams. It probably comes as no surprise that
for me, my greatest source of inspiration has always been
students and amazing master teachers with whom I have
had the honor to work.
I have had the privilege of working with and being inspired
by a vast demographic of young learners—from every
socio-economic level, from cultural backgrounds most
have never encountered, and those whose struggles with
academic, emotional or abusive challenges should have
left them completely broken. But with every group of
children, I have always been gifted with some element of
inspiration of their spirit, a sense of accomplishment or a
nugget of wisdom. While I am not directly connected to
the students of Raker Religious School as a classroom
teacher, I am still lucky enough to be a part of their
learning journey in my role of working with their teachers
and interacting with their families. I am still able to “drop
in” to classrooms and even if for just a little while, connect
with them. It is in the briefest encounters I am still able to
be inspired.
carefully he was choosing his words. In simplest terms he
conveyed how going into the year he knew that his
brother was going to have his bar mitzvah and that he
thought he really wouldn’t understand very much or feel a
part of it. But being in (this) class, he learned so many
prayers and things about the service, that when it came
time for the bar mitzvah, he did understand and he was so
happy to really feel like he belonged and that he was a
part of the experience…and he never thought he would.
More inspiring words could never be found in a book or on
a website, because the sentiment expressed by this
student conveys so beautifully what our purpose and
obligation to our young congregants is all about here at
Temple Solel. It shares, so profoundly, the impact that a
teacher can have in igniting that spark that burns in each
of the children that walks through our doors. It shares, so
profoundly, how much we gain when we simply listen with
our hearts, to our children.
Carl Jung once said, “Your vision will become clear only
when you can look into your own heart. Who looks
outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.”
The coming year will reveal some new and exciting
opportunities for our religious school students, families
and teachers—I see it as a most special journey which,
guided by our vision, will continue to guide dreams and
awaken the inspiring sparks within all of us.
During one session, toward the very end of this past school
year, I happened to sit down and chat with one of the
classes. I am always eager to solicit feedback from
students, as I truly believe their insight is the source of
greatest growth opportunities for program development
and improvement. So in the midst of our conversation the
teacher encouraged the students to share their thoughts
about their year. I was prepared to hear and expected to
hear the students offer their best “constructive criticism.”
What played out was the most inspiring and poignant
exchange that I could have imagined. One of the students
took his time to answer—and I could truly see how

Art @ Solel’s ART SHOWCASE
Features First Sculpture Exhibit
The new Art Showcase exhibit in the North
Hallway (between the Library and the Social
Hall) and at the entrance to the synagogue
features impressive sculpture by Richard Bloom.
“This is a hallmark show,” according to Pam
Ornstein, Chairperson of Art @ Solel. “This is the first time
we have displayed a temple member’s art outside the
building as well as in the North Hallway. The suspended
sculpture and the wooden monolith at the temple
entrance invite temple members to a special place. We
think it is representative of the welcoming and creative
spirit of the congregation.”
An artist reception will be held after the Friday night
Shabbat services on June 6 at 7:15 pm in the Social Hall.
Richard’s parents, Mary Ann and Pete, will sponsor the
refreshments. Richard will describe his work in an informal
presentation. As he states, “Making art is not a choice for
me. It comes from a voice inside of me wanting to be
heard. Creating sculptures allows me to translate that
voice and discover what it is trying to say.”

GIVE TODAY—
GUARANTEE TOMORROW
Those of you who attended our recent annual meeting,
heard many comments about our temple’s many
successes, including our endowment efforts, which are
encouraging.
Richard is a life-long member of Temple Solel and has
worked with children at every level in both The Solel
Preschool and Raker Religious School. He received a BFA in
Sculpture and Art Education from Arizona State University
and is a practicing artist in the Phoenix area.
While our membership dues, fundraisers and contributions
sustain current operating expenses, the potential for our
temple’s long-term viability will come from our ability to
grow our Endowment. Our Temple Solel Board and our
Endowment Foundation Board have each declared that
once we reach $1,000,000 in money invested, we will be
able to transfer earnings (not principal) to offset operating
expenses. As an example, at an annual rate of return 5%,
we could generate $50,000 for operating purposes. As the
Endowment grows, so does our potential to support
temple operations.
The next series of Art Showcase exhibits will start in
September. A variety of media will be represented. Details
of the upcoming series will be released soon. The Art @
Solel Committee was formed three years ago to manage
the temple’s current art collection and to promote art as a
community activity. For more information about Art @
Solel, contact Pam Ornstein, Chairperson at
[email protected].
We ask that EACH TEMPLE MEMBER consider becoming
part of that legacy. Make a gift of cash, securities, life
insurance or personal property. Include Temple Solel in
your will by making a bequest. Temple Solel Endowment
Foundation board members are available to work with
you. Please contact Richard Lamden, President of the
Foundation Board at [email protected] for more
information or to discuss your gift.

“Zionism” at the
Temple Solel Library
When I was a child, Zionism was never discussed in my
family. We were followers of classical Reform Judaism,
which chose to view Judaism solely as a religion. Beginning
in the 1800s, many people in the Reform movement
rejected Zionism and the idea of Jewish nationalism
(Pittsburgh Platform, 1885). We wanted to maintain our
Jewishness as a faith in the same way that Christians held
their faith.
Viewing Judaism primarily as a faith was a new
phenomenon in Jewish history. For centuries, Jews defined
themselves as a nation—a community of people bound by
a common homeland, history, and culture. We shared the
birthplace of Israel, the Hebrew language, and the laws of
the Torah. We were Am Yisrael, the People of Israel.
Ironically, theology was not a unifying factor. Many
different ideas about God developed over time, notes
Martin Gilbert in “Israel: A History” (2008). But the
survival of the Jewish people was everyone’s concern.
This concern deepened on the eve of World War II.
Overnight, millions of Jews lost their civil rights in Europe.
In America, the Reform movement changed its views on
Zionism and affirmed “the obligation of all Jewry to aid in
building a Jewish homeland” (Columbus Platform, 1937).
In my Reform community in Baltimore, I saw this change
happen slowly, temple by temple. By the time of my 10th
grade confirmation in 1965, Zionism was fully embraced at
my temple.
Today, my husband Jeff and I support the State of Israel. It
is the only country in the world wholly dedicated to Jewish
defense and prosperity. While the Jewish religion offers a
spectrum of theologies, from Reform to Orthodox and
beyond, the Jewish people remain one big family—Am
Yisrael, the People of Israel.
Please read about Israel in the Temple Solel library!

LPI Visits Temple Solel
Temple Solel hosted Debra Tyrrell, our bulletin
representative from Liturgical Publications, Inc.
(LPI), the week of May 19. The purpose of Debra’s
visit was to follow up with existing businesses that
advertise on page 14 of our newsletter and also
seek out new companies that may wish to
advertise in the Pathfinder. We thank our present
advertisers for renewing their ads and thereby
continuing their support of our temple. If you
would be interested in sponsoring an ad on behalf
of your favorite charity or organization or for your
business, you still have time to do so. Please
contact Debra Tyrrell directly at 1.800.950.9952,
ext. 2649 or via email to [email protected] for
additional information on ad costs, sizes and terms.
Knitting for a Purpose has had a busy season.
The dedicated ladies have donated , between
September and April, over 415 crib blankets,
lap blankets, children’s hats and infant’s hats
to both the Pima Indian Medical Nursery for
newborn infants and the Purple Society for
children with cancer. We will meet at Temple Solel on
Wednesday June 12, 2014 between 1:00 pm and 3:00
pm. Temple Solel provides the friendship, refreshments,
room and yarn. Please join us to crochet or knit and do
your Mitzvah. Questions? Contact Arlene Bonime at
480.391.1645 or [email protected].
Through our arrangement with LPI, the temple does
not pay to print the Pathfinder each month, which
saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our
newsletter is supported through the generosity of the
advertisers—many of whom are our own temple
congregants or members of our local community.
During these difficult economic times, please support
our advertisers with your patronage.
Remember, A strong and vibrant newsletter is good
for our community and a strong business community
is good for our temple.

In addition, Rabbi Linder has showed us that Social Action
is taking what we learn from the Torah and putting it into
action. Temple Solel should be very proud of how we have
supported the community as a whole with our projects.
While everyone needs to be thanked, a special call out is
deserved to the project leaders below. Without their dayto-day guidance, these wonderful social action projects
would not have accomplished.
