Background
• ProRail uses SAP EAM for the management
and maintenance of the railway network in
the Netherlands
• The objects of this rail network are registered
as 795.554 equipments in a fixed hierarchy.
• This hierarchy is defined as a IPPE structure in
SAP

Problem
In the capturing of the objects in the hierarchy
there is not an automatic check on the
allowable fixed structure.
This causes inconsistencies in the hierarchy.
Monitoring in SAP is not easy and very time
consuming.

Solution (1)
• Angle in EA checks the structure in relation to
the standard EAM IPPE structure
• The entire EAM objects tree is compared to
this structure in the IPPE.
• For this purpose a new equipment property is
created in EA
• The report reports by region all relationships
which do not match

Solution (2)
• The report indicates what the relationship
should be
• This monthly report will be emailed to the
object registration department that is
responsible for this region
• The angle can also be executed ad hoc, so
each region itself can follow their repair
process

Solution (3)
• The differences can be solved directly.
• It never creates a backlog.
• The users of the object structure have no
problems anymore with errors in the
hierarchy!

Qualitative Results
• Angle gives the solution direction (tells the
user what is the right structure)
• A consistent and complete EAM structure
• Problems are avoided in advance
• No issues anymore in processes that use these
data

Recommendations
• Use the scheduler (automation client) and
email functionality to automatically send
exception report
• Report is sent only if abnormalities have been
found. Fully automatic!
• Use the opportunity to go directly from the
report in EA to the transaction in SAP by
clicking the object to correct the error.
