Internship Program The goal of the WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 Internship Program is to provide college students with a unique and practical experience in the radio industry. Internships are available for those full-time students who are seeking approved college credit hours. WAQY/WLZX had an intern from June 2014-August 2014. Our intern got the chance to experience a variety of facets of the radio industry including helping with website updates, preparing for station events, taking inventory of promotional items, archiving and preparing for station events, taking inventory of promotional items, archiving and inventorying old network programming audio for the production department, monitoring & recording competitive radio stations, shadowing on-air talent, and assisting with various sales tasks. WRSI/WHMP/Hits 94.3 had one intern from June 2014-August 2014 (UMASS Amherst). Our intern had the opportunity to upload podcasts to websites, download shows for broadcast from outside websites and CDs, learned to operate on-air boards, learned production and editing of segments on WRSI and WHMP, assisted News Director in composing stories, and accompanied staff on remotes/appearances. Scholarship Programs Connecticut School of Broadcasting WAQY participated in the Connecticut School of Broadcasting Scholarship Program which provides scholarships to high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the broadcasting industry. We ran radio advertisements in exchange for contributions to student scholarships. Massachusetts Broadcasters Association In May 2014, WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 completed its fourth and final component of the 2014 MBA Student Broadcaster Scholarship Program. The applications were ranked with our top fifteen selections. We ran radio advertisements and listed details on our websites of the scholarship program and how to apply. We also contributed financially to the Scholarship Program. EEO Training for Management On October 7th, 2014, Luke Donahue (Business Manager) participated in the 2014 Webinar "Recruiting, Hiring, and Papering: The FCC’s EEO Rule for Broadcasters" hosted by Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP sponsored by the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association. Co-Sponsorship of Job Fair WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 and sister stations WHAI/WPVQ Co-Sponsored the Western Mass Veterans Expo held on October 9, 2014 at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield. We provided media planning, marketing, and advertising direction for this event. Each radio cluster also ran radio ads informing the public of the expo which provided employment, VA, and health benefits assistance. Massachusetts Broadcasters Association brochures detailing "Careers in Radio Broadcasting" and one sheets detailing available positions at each radio cluster were handed out. Management and Support Staff were in attendance. General Outreach WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/Hits 94.3 routinely contact various community organizations to notify them of job opportunities at the radio stations through email, fax, and mail and through on-air broadcasts informing them to contact [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] to be included in future distributions. Outreach Activities (Continued) Other Activities Provided copies of Massachusetts Broadcasters Association "Careers in Radio Broadcasting" for distribution at WAQY & WLZX Station Events held Thursdays & Fridays at local establishments. Copies are also available at the front reception desk at station offices. Continually analyze recruitment program on an ongoing basis and regularly update internal database to achieve broad outreach to potential applicants. On December 10, 2013, a local Cub Scout Troop visited WAQY/WLZX to assist with Scouting Communication requirements. They received a tour of our facility with question/answer sessions with various departments and copies of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association "Careers in Radio Broadcasting" were handed out. The air staff at WRSI/WHMP/Hits 94.3 conducted tours of our stations for a number of community groups. They also see how exciting and vibrant the world of radio is and what careers are available in this profession. We plan to continue to invite the community into Northampton Radio in the coming year as part of our community outreach efforts.
