Antigone
BY SOPHOKLES
Translated by Anne Carson
Directed by Ivo van Hove
Starring Juliette Binoche
Performed in English
Celebrated stage and screen actress Juliette Binoche plays Antigone in
a contemporary version of Sophokles’s tragedy, translated afresh by T.S Eliot
Prize-winning poet Anne Carson.
When her dead brother is decreed a traitor, his body left unburied beyond the

uncle who governs, she dares to say ‘No!’
Renowned for the revelatory nature of his work, Ivo van Hove is one of the
world’s most sought after theatre directors.

About Accessible
Performances
Audio Enhancement
Audio Enhancement is a service for people who are hard-of-hearing
that amplifies the live sound from the stage. The King’s Theatre uses the
Sennheiser Infrared System (see below). Box Office staff can advise on
the best seating to ensure you get a good signal as the equipment may
not work in all areas of the auditorium.
Audio Description
Audio Described performances support people who are blind or
partially sighted to access live performances. An Audio Describer
provides a live commentary of the visual elements of a performance
which is broadcast though a personal headset. They will describe
information such as where the characters are on stage, what they’re
wearing, how they gesture and what the set looks like, without intruding
on the actors’ dialogue. The commentary will begin 15 minutes before
curtain up. The King’s Theatre uses the Sennheiser Infrared System (see
below). Box Office staff can advise on the best seating to ensure you
get a good signal as the audio equipment may not work in all areas of
the auditorium.
Sennheiser Infrared System
The King’s Theatre uses the Sennheiser Infrared System, which requires
a receiver in the form of either a headset or a personal induction loop
that works in conjunction with a hearing aid. The audio equipment is
provided by the theatre and can be collected from the programme box
on arrival at the venue. For some performances this equipment is in
high demand but we will do all we can to accommodate your needs.

Touch Tour
Prior to an Audio Described performance, a touch tour offers visually
impaired patrons and their companions the opportunity to get up
close to a selection of costumes and props. The describer will give
a full account of the items that you are introduced to, and how they
will feature in the performance. Tickets should be booked in advance.
Please note touch tours are not open to the general public.
Captioning
This service is useful for anyone who is Deaf, hard-of-hearing, has
difficulty in following strong accents, or whose first language is not
English. Captions are displayed in large print on either side of the stage.
A Captioner cues the text that appears in real time as the words are
spoken by the performers. The captions will also provide information
about who is speaking and any sound effects or music that may be
important to understanding the performance. Box Office staff can
advise on the best seating for viewing captions.
