From many years experience in the design and manufacture of Infra-Red Flame Detectors, we have invented and patented the
single sensor infra-red flame detector with optical filtering, producing the S111 and S121 detectors for use outdoors in a wide
range of applications. Specifically designed for use in the demanding environments of the onshore petro-chemical industry, the
S111 and S121 detectors incorporate an abrasion resistant sapphire window in a protective housing to meet IP65.

S111/121 Solar Blind Flame Detectors
With their unique filter and sensing system, the S111 and S121
detectors can be used in locations where other types of flame
detectors give false alarms due to external interference e.g. sunlight
and arc welding.
Operation in the infra-red spectrum around 4.4 microns ensures
that the detector will not blinded by thick smoke and will be tolerant
to dirty environments.
Use in Hazardous Areas
The S111 and S121 detectors meet the requirements of EN50-020
Part 7 and are BASEEFA certified EEx ia IIC T5. Other approvals
include FM, CSA, VdS, SA and most marine bodies. As part of an
intrinsically safe circuit, they are suitable for Zones 0,1 and 2,
where Group IIC gases or lesser hazards are CONTINUOUSLY
present in explosive concentrations.
With their long range, tolerance to dirty environments and high
immunity to external interference, the S111 and S121 detectors
represent a major advance in the technology of hydrocarbon
flame detection.

Performance
The detector is designed to respond to a minimum time of three seconds, this being the optimum signal processing time constant of the
circuitry. Varying sizes of fire will be detected at given distances in the same time and the graph shows the typical ranges for the detection
of the flames, for given areas of liquid fuels.
Note: These results are based upon the fire reaching equilibrium rates of combustion in still atmosphere.
Typical Response
The S111 and S121 detectors, by virtue of their construction and rejection of spurious radiation, are suitable for use both indoors and outdoors
in a wide range of applications. They will detect a 0.1m2 petrol fire a 20 m on the centre line within approximately 10 seconds. A 0.4m 2 fire is
detected at 40m. Installation arrangements are specific for the environment and risk situation.
Directional Sensitivity and Range
The polar diagram shows that the maximum detector sensitivity lies on the detector central axis. The variation of relative ranges with angle of
incidence up to the maximum is shown.A
The range of the detector will vary with the type of fuels as indicated above.
