September 5, 2014 TIMBERJAY Newspapers 3B ELY JOINT POWERS Ely Area Development Association to assist area job seekers by KEITH VANDERVORT Ely Editor ELY – Job seekers in the Ely area, through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and the Ely Area Development Association, will soon be able to receive help and support at the Up North Jobs offices at the corner of First Avenue East and Sheridan Street. Gerald Tyler, president of the organization, announced the new service last month during the regular meeting of the Joint Powers group. “We have collaborated to establish an office in Ely to assist area residents seeking employment,” he said. “DEED has offered to train our volunteers and conduct “Business of the Day Events” right here in our Ely offices,” he told the group. Tyler also announced the reformation of the local development group. “The Ely Area Development Association (EADA) was incorporated in 1959 to promote the development of economic, educational and charitable opportunities for the common benefit of the residents of Northeastern Minnesota,” he said. For the past three years the EADA was inactive. “In April, newly appointed directors and officers assumed responsibility for its management.” “In past years programs and initiatives directed by the City of Ely have had limited success in stimulating economic development and job growth,” said Tyler. In 1967 the Pioneer Mine ceased operations in Ely. At that time 1,775 students were enrolled in the Ely School District and the population of Ely was about 6,400. Since 1980, Ely’s population has declined by more than 28 percent. In 2010, United States Census Bureau data disclosed that Ely’s Median Household Income was $31,905 while that of the State of Minnesota was $57,243, Tyler said. “The percentage of Ely’s population living below the poverty level was 18 percent while that of the state as a whole was 11 percent,” he said. “A survey has revealed 29 commercial property listings on Sheridan Street alone with still more properties offered for sale on Chapman and Camp streets. Almost all indices confirm that economic development and job growth in the Ely area is stagnant and in decline,” Tyler said. Ely Mayor Ross Petersen questioned Tyler’s information on the property listings. “Are you sure there are that many vacant buildings?” he asked. “You know, Sustainable Ely says that we have a vibrant and sustainable economy.” Amid roars of laughter, another comment was heard, “That’s the difference between the Tuesday Group and the Thursday Group.” The Joint Powers meets the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the same meeting room at the Grand Ely Lodge as the Tuesday Group, which gathers each Tuesday at noon with attendees generally advocating for environmental issues. “Slogans promoting Ely as being at the ‘end of the road at the edge of the wilderness’ may stimulate tourism but does little or nothing to encourage employers to open a business in or relocate to Ely,” Tyler said. With the assistance of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), Up North Jobs proposes to establish a program where many of the jobseeker services offered by the State of Minnesota in their WorkForce Centers will be offered in Ely. “If well-paying jobs able to support a family are not available in the Ely area, then job seekers should be assisted in seeking employment with industrial concerns and businesses in Virginia, Hibbing, Mountain Iron, Eveleth and other Iron Range communities,” he said. resume preparation, word processing, job applications and computer applications; ‰ Provide an office where job seekers can interact with prospective employers; ‰ Provide computers with Internet and e-mail access, telephones and printers for job seekers to contact employers, submit applications and conduct searches for job openings posted on-line by employers; ‰ Assist job seekers in their search for jobs with interaction by and between DEED, NorthForce (Duluth, Iron Range and Superior), Minnesota’s Ve t e r a n s Employment Representatives and the St. Louis County Veterans Service Office; ‰ Establish a line of communications between the community, employers and job seekers; conduct surveys to identify companies with job openings; and interact with the St. Louis County Public Health & Human Services and the County Veterans Service Office; and ‰ Provide office facilities to hold “Business of the Day” events to bring employers and job seekers together. “These services will be provided at no charge to the job seeker,” Tyler said. Job placement services The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development has established offices in many Minnesota communities. The nearest state WorkForce Center Resource office, which provides facilities and offers online access to MinnesotaWorks.net to those seeking jobs, is located in Virginia, according to Tyler. He said, “Relatively few Ely area job seekers utilize DEED facilities to seek resume preparation help, attend workshops held to enhance job seekers’ interviewing skills and access labor market information (they may not own a computer or reliable vehicle) since they must travel to Virginia or Hibbing to do so.” The EADA plans to provide the following services: ‰ Assist job seekers with Obituaries And Death Notices Janice M.
