THE MEND MISSION
MEND works to end hunger
in Essex County by supporting our network of interfaith food pantries. MEND
provides funds, food, social
services referrals, volunteers, and a forum for all
member pantries. MEND advocates for policies to improve the quality of life for
those in need in Essex
County.

This year, Meeting Emergency Needs with Dignity
will be marking its Thirty-fifth Anniversary. MEND was
formed in 1979 with the help of a local Xerox executive
who took a leave of absence to help other volunteers
organize a system to support food pantries in Newark.
Since its founding, MEND has seen no decrease in the
demand for its services; in fact, that demand has increased and MEND has grown to a network of 18 faithbased food pantries serving those in need throughout
Essex County.
Initially, MEND depended largely upon the support of the Emergency Food and Nutrition Network of
Catholic Charities (EFNN) for its funding. In late 2009,
however, to develop its own presence as a separate and
independent entity, MEND incorporated as a New Jersey
not-for-profit corporation. MEND continues to receive
administrative and logistical support from EFNN. The other work of MEND is carried out exclusively by volunteers,
and MEND is most appreciative of their support and services. We are also especially grateful to the faith-based
organizations, foundations, businesses, and numerous
individuals who have contributed money and services to
MEND to help us in our mission of service to those in
need.
In 2012 MEND was able to serve more than 81,000
individuals in Essex County. MEND and all of our pantries
were very fortunate to receive an outpouring of assistance and donations that enabled our network to assist
the many more thousands of individuals who came to us
in the aftermath of Sandy. Yet, our pantries still have an
ongoing critical shortfall of 27,500 pounds of food
monthly that must be filled to enable our pantries to
serve those who need our help.
MEND has established two key goals for 2013:
We will further develop our outreach programs to appeal
to a broader group of local donors, businesses and other
funding sources in order to address the shortfall of food,
and we will increase the size of our board to address the
additional skills and resources needed to better serve our
MEND pantries.
We thank all of our friends and supporters and
hope for your continued support.
