Since 1673, The First Church of Deerfield has gathered for the purpose of worship and spiritual
sustenance. It was originally founded in the New England Congregational tradition and is now
affiliated with both the United Church of Christ and the Unitarian Universalist Association.
We continue to meet for communal worship on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am. Our church school is
present at the beginning of worship and then adjourns to the classroom building behind the church
after the Children’s Time. Communion is offered six times during the year, and other services are held
to celebrate the holy days of the church calendar and to honor and commemorate special occasions
in our larger community life.
As a community church, we feel a responsibility and commitment to those beyond our immediate
church family. We seek to serve the wider community through a dedicated benevolence program,
participation with the local schools and academies, pastoral care and outreach. We welcome friends
and visitors to worship and to work with us and we invite those who feel a deeper call to unite with us
in membership.

Annual Meeting Minutes
January 20, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 11:17am.
Minister Ann Hallstein began with a prayer.
Executive Committee Chair David Pond read the warrant for the annual meeting, in Clerk Carole Pennock's
absence.
The quorum was attained.
The reading of the minutes from the 2012 Annual Meeting was waived, and they were approved as written.
Moderator Wayne Turner asked for a vote to dispense with the reading of the committee reports. It was so
moved, seconded, and approved. He then suggested that a member of each committee give a highlight of that
committee's work. This was also moved, seconded, and approved.
Minister--Ann Hallstein
The highlight for Ann was the Gleaning Project at a farm in Sunderland with the Sunday School. The
children really worked hard. Many boxes of carrots were picked and given to the Hatfield Food Pantry.
Executive Committee--David Pond
David cited the great work that the Executive Committee and the Trustee Committee did together. He
said there was great momentum.
Trustees--Ross Anderson
Ross felt the highlight was the committee's work on the preservation of the endowments and assets of
the church.
Church Life--Pam Bensen
Pam said that the Deacons do a lot of good work under Ann's guidance.
Religious Education-- No one was present from the committee
Buildings and Grounds-- No one was present from the committee
Music--Nancy Pond
Nancy praised the great variety of music and musicians.
Brick Church Music Series--Jean Turner
Jean is thrilled with the response of the audience (including many new people) and the sponsors.
Missions--Dorothy Milne
This is a great committee and its soup fundraiser was very successful.
David Pond thanked all outgoing committee members and accepted a motion to accept a new slate of
committee members. The motion was accepted. The new committees met and elected a chair for each. They
are:
Executive--David Pond
Trustees--Ross Anderson
Church Life--Pam Bensen
Religious Education--Mary Dancer

Buildings and Grounds--Ben Bensen
Music--Nancy Pond
Mission--Dorothy Milne
Nominating--David Pond
Page 3
Budget--A motion was made to approve the 12-month budget for the coming year. That motion was seconded
and passed. Ross Anderson pointed out that we are now at $60,000.00 in pledges. Pam Bensen (Treasurer)
said that last year we gave a small raise to our personnel. This year we gave a bonus as a one-time thank you.
Nancy Pond pointed out that the line item for Music should just say "Music" and not "Guest Organists and
Soloists."
Combining Executive and Trustee Committees--David reported that over the last two to three years, the two
have been meeting together and it seems to be a more efficient way to operate. It is also efficient for Ann to
have the meetings together. They are not looking for a vote or a by-law change at the moment. The motion that
we agree to the recommendation for the two committees to meet together was approved. The by-law change, if
necessary, will be made at a later date.
Sale of the Parsonage--David reported that the Executive/Trustee Committees have been working for about
three years, looking into selling the Parsonage. No minister has lived there since the Anastos family moved out
in 2000. Appraisals three years ago ranged from six hundred thousand to over one million dollars. A new, more
recent appraisal was higher. The ongoing expenses for upkeep to the Parsonage run about $42,000.00 each
year (for insurance, major repairs, painting, electrical, etc.) Buildings and Grounds committee members have
spent a lot of time there, and it is in good shape now.
The Galperins have been renting the Parsonage for over a year. Discussions with them about a possible
purchase is subject to a vote of church members. They made an offer of $875,000.00, which seems like a fair
price for the church and for them. We will need another church meeting (on February 17) to vote to accept this
offer or not. We have approached other possible buyers (about 20) and have had no interest from any of them.
A discussion followed:
Tim Neumann reminded the meeting that the Parsonage was not ours until the 1960's. At that time there was
some resentment that the house was "dumped" on the church, since we were not big enough to support it. The
last few times we have looked for a new minister, no one has expressed interest in living there, so we don't
need it to attract ministers.
Jean Turner asked what we would do with the money, if we sold the Parsonage. David said that we would
invest it to insure that we'd have the same level of income that we are making by renting it. We would also pay
off the loan we took out for church renovations several years ago (about $33,993.000.) Jean asked about an
extra building next door, as we need a place for Sunday School, social activities, office, extra bathroom, etc.
David replied that we need the income from the sale of the Parsonage to support our operating budget. Tim
suggested keeping our eye on the Post Office next door, which is leased from Historic Deerfield. Ben pointed
out that purchasing that could lead to more major expenses.
David concluded the discussion by reminding everyone about the Parsonage sale vote on February 17. He
asked that if people cannot attend the meeting, they leave a proxy. He said the Executive and Trustee
committees are putting together a Purchase and Sales Agreement through lawyer Pam Stobierski. He thanked
Building and Grounds, Ross, who has done the lion's share of the negotiating, and Pam, who has been the
liaison with the Galperins, for their hard work in getting to this point.
Other Business-- Ann thanked David for all of his hard work on behalf of the Parsonage sale. Ann reported that
per her contract, she is entitled to a three-month sabbatical. She is planning to take her sabbatical in three
one-month chunks, rather than as a three-month block. She will start the first month's sabbatical the last
Sunday in April and will finish at the end of May. She has asked Peter Ives, a DA graduate and retired minister
from Northampton, to fill in for her.
There was no other business.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:08pm.
Respectfully submitted, Carole Pennock, Clerk
(With thanks to Nancy Pond who recorded the meeting's minutes while the clerk was out of town)

Report from The Minister
It was another good year for The First Church of Deerfield. Emphasis on mission giving and programs, vital
Sunday School that children want to come to, excellent choir and music program, continuing support of local
food programs, lively fellowship and vital worship services all contribute to the health and mission of the
church.
This year, my 7th, I was eligible for three months sabbatical and decided to break up the time into three one
month units. In April/May I took the first part, which included a trip to New Mexico, as well as the death of my
much-loved dog Queenie, and in October/November I helped with Nancy Sykes’ campaign for Mayor of
Easthampton. The 3rd part will be taken in 2014, late spring/early summer. I enjoyed my time, and the church
seemed to do just fine under the able guidance of Rev. Peter Ives, recently retired from First churches,
Northampton. My thanks to the church for these breaks!
WORSHIP: Over the course of 2013, worship continued to draw both new visitors and “the regulars,” our
devoted membership. Between our service of the word and our superb music, attendees are offered a rich
Sunday experience (so described by others than myself!)
We are fortunate to have Thomas Pousont as our Music Director, as well as our dedicated choir; together they
bring the power of music to each service. While Tom was away in late summer and fall working on his thesis
research, the choir filled in, taking turns at direction, and did a wonderful job at it!
In addition to special services such as World Communion, All Souls, Stewardship Sunday, and of course,
Maundy Thursday, Easter and Christmas, the Thanksgiving Seder was well attended and continues to be a
family favorite. Deerfield Academy held its annual Vespers service with us before Christmas, and we hosted
the Deerfield Academy reunion memorial service in June as well.
Stewardship Sunday this year was combined with a “top-secret” service of celebration in honor of Jean and
Wayne Turner for their contributions to the church through the Brick Church Music Series. They were
presented with a small bronze replica of our church crafted by Silversmith Steve Smithers and a reception was
held in their honor at the Caswell Library, following the service
The family service before Christmas is always a joy, and Mary Dancer did a wonderful job as usual planning it.
Easter and Christmas services had wonderful music, lovely flowers, and good readers, thanks to the range of
talent in the congregation.
Members Tim Neumann and Leo Hourihan were kind enough to fill the pulpit/lead services, along with “regular”
supply preachers Susan Boone and Bob Livingston. Peter Ives filled in in both May and October while I was on
sabbatical, and was quite happy with his time at the church. Upon my return, he advised me: “Ann, you have
the best church in the Valley!” (Yes, Peter, I know that!)
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Sunday School continued under the gifted direction of Mary Dancer, with Justin
Cabral as an aide. Jane Gilbert Keith was taken out of Sunday School activities due to a severe break in her
wrist which took months to heal. Happily, she was back for the Children’s Christmas service! Kim Butz
graciously stepped in to help Mary in Jane’s absence, along with others.
PASTORAL CARE: We lost dearly beloved member of the congregation Rev. Stanley Dahlman. Stan had
been confined to bed for quite some time, and had a good and peaceful death. We sent Stan out in good style
with a bang-up service with choir, organ and trumpet (Eric Dahlman). He continues to be missed, particularly
by me!
Several of the congregation lost close family members this past year, including Bill Spencer’s mother Claire;
Marc Dancer’s mother Nellie; Sue Keller’s father George Sisak; Linda Spencer’s father Hilliard Hicks; and Mary
Clark’s father James Donald (Don). Although Nellie Dancer did not wish a service per se when she died, we
did celebrate her life as part of a Sunday service.
2013 Annual Report- The First Church of Deerfield
Page 5
Pastoral care concentrated around home visits to those confined to home or hospital by illness (including a
scary bout of meningitis for Martin Milne, now fine), coordinating meals and blessing prayer shawls to support
those in difficult times; lunch, coffee, and “walking” visits. Elizabeth Purnell was confined to her home following
a stroke in November, but able to join the congregation for the 4:30pm Christmas Eve service.
CHURCH ACTIVITIES: Through the auspices of the church and Missions Committee special collections were
taken up/projects undertaken in support of local and international missions, including sending a donation
through the International Rescue Committee for Syrian refugees (proceeds from breakfast for the Craft Fair);
supplies gathered by the Sunday School for the Franklin County Dog Shelter; and the Christmas Eve collection
donation to the Center for Self-Reliance for support of homeless families sent to Greenfield.
Collection of food for the Orange pantry continues on the first Sunday of the month, as does the church’s
cooking and serving of a community meal served in Greenfield three times a year. We especially appreciate
Bement School’s help with serving the meal: there are often Bement students who come along with Ben
Bensen or Dorothy Milne and their presence is a boon!
Ongoing fundraising continues under the able hand of Jean Turner, and the Brick Church Music series (see
her report for more detail) continues to produce fine musical events and raise a good amount each year for the
church. I was pleased that a colleague and friend from my Union days, Harry Huff, was invited to perform in
February as guest organist.
IN CARE: Mark Koyama began his second year at Yale Divinity School and continues to be in care of the
Franklin Association. The church continued collecting “Koins for Koyama” as a way to support Mark and help
with seminary expenses. Coins were combined with a generous donation from an anonymous donor so that by
December 2013, Mark had received from the congregation over $1,115!
ADMINISTRATION: Jennifer Williams and Tom Mershon continue to be absolutely indispensable, much
appreciated, and keep the church running. Without them we could not function. They are professionals of the
highest order, and as ever, a pleasure to work with!
To all who served on church committees, thank you. Working together, it has been a good year for the church
and those we hope to serve. The committees and boards serve as both the governing structure of the church
and the engine behind what goes on here. Without the many volunteer hours, we could not have a church.
MISCELLANEOUS: I performed a wedding for a gay couple from Indiana who had not been able to find a
minister to marry them in a church there; Tim Neumann stood in as deacon witness and presented them with
mementos of Deerfield. I also co-celebrated a wedding of a lesbian couple held outside in Westhampton in
July.
I was invited to perform the pastoral prayer at Harry Colt’s memorial service (Bement grandparent) held in the
Episcopal church in Easthampton in April; I led a service for Chris Marcouillier’s mother-in-law, Muriel, held at
Wrisley’s in July; and performed a rather last-minute graveside service in Greenfield for Lois E. A. Colie,
originally from Greenfield.
I was pleased to perform a house blessing for Mike Packard at his new home in Plainfield in October.
I attended the Deerfield Academy Convocation in September, to hear congregant John Burke deliver the
address to the student body.
For continuing education, I attended a one day retreat in Amherst on psychosynthesis led by Tom Yeomans.
One Sunday service in December was cancelled for snow.
Respectfully submitted, The Rev. Ann L. Hallstein

Report from the Executive Committee
The First Church Executive Committee meets monthly with representatives of church committees and our
Minister to consider a broad range of issues related to our church. Most are procedural in nature and are FYI
matters only. A few require input and a decision by the Executive Committee. For the past year, those have
included:
1. Parsonage Sale – We were pleased with the sale for a number of reasons. The sale price was attractive
both for The First Church and for the Galperin family. We were also pleased to know that several church
members, especially including Pam and Ben Bensen, no longer needed to devote lots of time and
attention to its maintenance and general upkeep.
Now that the proceeds from the sale are part of our endowment, we have been able to provide a
slightly larger level of support to our staff and to a couple of budgetary line items. We will continue to
maintain a tight level of control knowing that our endowment will remain a key source of funding for our
annual operating budget.
2. Our Budget – Congratulations to everyone who has helped to reduce our operating deficit over the last
four years. We are still projecting a deficit for 2014 but it will be about one-third the size of what it was
three years ago.
3. Ann’s Sabbatical – Thanks to Ann’s interest in spreading her sabbatical out over a year plus, we have
experienced a new (for us) process. By taking her sabbatical in one month blocks, we have had the
dual benefit of greater continuity of her ministry with us and the opportunity to welcome Rev. Peter Ives
as her substitute. It seems like a win-win for everyone.
4. Tom’s leave for his trip to Germany – A special thanks to everyone who filled in so ably while he was
away. I look forward to learning more about his trip in February.
5. The Brick Church Music Series – Thanks to the fine work by Jean (and her key assistant, Wayne), we
have established a special endowment fund for the Series. This fund will help to ensure that this series
and our church music program will be even stronger in the years ahead.
Thanks so much for all that you do to support our wonderful First Church of Deerfield.
For the Committee, David Pond, Chair
    
Report from the Board of Trustees
This past year has been a significant financial change for our church. With the vote by the congregation to sell
our parsonage we were able to reduce expenses related to the parsonage as well as pay off some long term
debt with Greenfield Savings Bank for the renovations and painting to our sanctuary. This is a significant
monthly savings in interest expense.
Parsonage sale: $875,000.
Expenses incurred for sale: $4,999.97
Pay off of bank loan: $33,993.23
Funds used for operating expenses in 2013 without rental income: $36,006.80
We have, over the past several years, tried to increase our pledging units and amounts pledged and have
made progress in reducing our deficit budget presented to the congregation each year. This year’s budget
reflects that continued progress and as we add new members and our pledging grows we can reduce our
dependence on relying on our endowment.
Respectfully submitted,
Ross Anderson, Pam Bensen, Ted Pennock, Brian Williams, Tim Neumann, Ben Bensen

Report from the Board of Church Life
Another busy year for the Deacons. We welcomed Jeanne Grover and Joe Durham (and his side kick, Nancy)
to our flock and they have been very welcome additions, jumping right in to help in all areas of church life and
fellowship!
The Deacons and Ann meet monthly at Tim Neumann's office and discuss the upcoming months of worship
and other issues related to the congregation. Nancy Pond continues to do yeoman's work as our scribe and
other Deacons Linda McDonald, Jean Turner, Tim Neumann (and Tom) and Elaine Anderson provide support
and fellowship as needed - and then some.
With Ann on sabbatical two (different) months this year, the Deacons stepped up nicely to help our visiting
minister, Peter Ives. Other ministers filling in to supply the pulpit included Susan Boone, Bob Livingston, and
our own Leo Hourihan. Tim Neumann and Jean Turner led the service the Sunday after Christmas, when Tom
and Ann were off.
We continue to be thankful to Tom Mershon for all he does to make our sanctuary so beautiful, especially at
Christmas and Easter. Hanging of the greens prior to Advent is a task Tom has taken over. Tom also plays a
major role in planning the annual Seder held at Eaglebrook School. All of the Deacons say THANK YOU, TOM.
And always a BIG THANKS to Jennifer Williams for keeping us on track, preparing the order of worship
weekly, providing the Worship schedule for us to work from, keeping the roster up to date, and numerous other
tasks which contribute to our shared “church life.”

Report from the Buildings and Grounds Committee
Last year’s first paragraph of the Buildings and Grounds Committee should stand again: “First, the chair wishes
to thank all and sundry who’ve undertaken to help the church with their own special gifts. Both members and
gifts are countless! Most notable among these many (named and unnamed) would be Al Kavanaugh, whose
ongoing work on the slate walk project (between the church and the post office) is more than a labor of love;
it’s a tenured position!” Amen!
Work done at the Church:
Happily, there’s been less major activity at the church itself. Finding water in the basement due to seepage
from heavy rains in June, all the materials and goods of any value were brought under the sanctuary and
raised off the floor on pallets or the like. This also involved some reorganization, and there seem to be items in
the basement which could use better homes. At some point we hope to see to this. Many cans of vintage paint
have been gathered together as well; these need to be disposed of. A project for the coming year!
2013 Annual Report- The First Church of Deerfield
Page 15
Later in the year it became necessary to have considerable (though invisible to the congregation) work done in
the basement: a length of sewer line was repaired, and a water cut-off valve and water meter were replaced
with accompanying plumbing.
Work done on the Parsonage up until its sale:
Our relationship with our tenants, the Galperins was as amicable as imaginable, and the last minute details
required to enable the church’s sale of the Parsonage (installation of smoke and radon detectors) were
completed in time.
Work anticipated:
Ann has asked for several years that we have the church’s windows cleaned, but close inspection of them
indicates that they need to be repaired as well, and first. The putty is very decrepit, and contains lead (though
minimal asbestos) and any work would have to be done off-site. We are seeking bids from experts and then
hope to pursue historic preservation grants to help fund this project, which we anticipate will be expensive.
Replacement with modern windows is not a viable alternative, however, as the cost would be higher and the
chance of outside funding minimal.
Along with this project we’re considering the adaptation of one pew to be fully handicapped accessible. This
would probably be done on one of the outside pew, with minimal visual disturbance, and we hope that the
costs could be included in the window project. Both these ideas are in the very earliest of early stages at this
point. So: stay tuned!
Finally, the committee will see to fixing the clasp which holds shut a door high in the steeple; 150+ years
seems to be the lifetime we can expect of some hardware. We’ll also try to put screens in to prevent insects
from nesting on high.
As always, the committee welcomes suggestions and ideas from members of the congregation for projects
needing attention or areas needing improvement.
Respectfully submitted:

Report from the Music Committee
This year of music at The First Church of Deerfield has been rich and rewarding. We continue to grow and
flourish under the inspired leadership of our Organist and Director of Music, Tom Pousont. Even as he
prepares to complete his doctoral studies at McGill, he has been a steady presence, making sure that each
week’s musical selections are meaningful and reflect the themes of the readings and sermon.
The choir has sung for most of the Sundays between September and early June. Some of the anthems that we
have done are “old favorites”, but Tom often challenges us with a new twist. On January 27 and February 17
(1st Sunday of Lent), we sang a piece with Hebrew text, “Barechu”. In early February we did the familiar “Tallis’
Canon”, but we stood all around the balcony so that we had five antiphonal pairs of singers. Many people in
the congregation commented on how effective that was. Other Lenten music included Willan’s “Create in Me a
Clean Heart”, two pieces by R. Farrant, and duets of Handel, Telemann and Loeillet played by Marc Dancer
(recorder) and Nancy Pond (cello). On Palm Sunday we sang Rachmaninoff’s “To Thee, O Lord” and Brahms’
“Ruf zur Maria” in German. Easter Sunday (March 31) included three movements (Kyrie, Credo and Agnus
Dei, with instrumental accompaniment) from Mozart’s Coronation Mass, as well as “Sicut Cervus” by Palestrina
and “Alleluja” from Mozart’s “Exsultate Jubilate”, sung by soloist Tracy Smith Bessette. During April and May
the choir continued to enrich worship services by performing work by composers ranging from William Byrd
and Christopher Tye to Mendelssohn to Stanford. May 28 was Choir Recognition Sunday; we expressed our
appreciation to a DA student, Sierra Janik, who graced the choir with her lovely soprano voice during her
several years at the academy.
2013 Annual Report- The First Church of Deerfield
Page 16
At a meeting of our committee in July, Tom talked to us about his plan to spend several months in Germany
completing original research for his doctoral degree. He would be studying the mixture of sounds produced by
the organs of Bach’s time, in some churches where Bach himself played. Since these organs are very difficult
to access during the summer months, when the churches host many concerts and music festivals, Tom would
have to do his work beginning in late August and ending in mid-November. He had already met with a core
group of choir members (Mary Clark, Marc Dancer, Sue Keller and Nancy Pond), who agreed to take
responsibility for leading the choir for two Sundays each; Liz Dolby was the overseer of the master schedule,
and kept everyone updated on the anthems which Tom had selected and arranged by week, etc. before his
departure.
It was really wonderful to experience the hidden talents of our own choir members, and to have such a wide
variety of musical offerings. Marc and Dorian played duets on Sept. 22 (Dorian on double bass). The following
week the choir was off, and Rosie Caine provided beautiful selections on her Irish harp. In October and
November we were delighted to hear jazzy versions of spirituals played by Sue Keller on trumpet, with
Marianne Lockwood accompanying on piano. Alain Hunkins and Nancy Pond did violin and cello duets twice,
and were joined by Marianne on piano for a Loeillet trio. Mary Clark led the children in singing on October 27.
We are really indebted to Marianne for so capably accompanying all of the hymns during Tom’s absence, and
always being flexible and willing to help in any way.
Tom returned for the November 17 service, and it was then time to go into high gear for the Advent and
Christmas season. On December 8 (2nd Sunday of Advent), the musical motif was “Savior of the Nations
Come”, which was reflected in the prelude, anthem, and postlude music. That afternoon Tom presented a
wonderful concert (as part of the Brick Church Music Series) which incorporated pieces for the Advent season.
For the children’s service on December 22, we enjoyed hearing Hunter Keller on viola (joined by Sue on
double bass) and Brendan Butz on his saxophone. All of the children led us in singing “Let There Be Peace on
Earth”.
Both Christmas Eve services included a wide variety of pieces to help tell the Nativity story: “Puer Natus”
(Gregorian chant), “Lullaby on Christmas Eve”, with soloist Hilary Cullen Budwey, “In Dulci Jubilo”, “The Three
Kings”, with Hilary and Tom as soloists, “Good King Wenceslas”, Mendelssohn’s “Behold a Star from Jacob
Shining”, and “O Little One Sweet”; about half of the choral pieces were accompanied by a chamber group of
two violins, viola, cello, bass, and flute.
One event that the Music Committee helped to plan and carry out was the November 3 presentation of “Mrs.
Alcott Remembers”, a dramatic reading created and performed by our own Joanne Potee. This was held in the
Caswell Library as a benefit for the BCMS, and attracted almost 100 people. Mary Clark was instrumental in
publicizing this event by contacting newspapers and preparing posters.
We are blessed to have such rich musical talent in our congregation, and thank all who generously give their
time to help make the First Church such a special community.
Respectfully submitted, Mary Clark, Dorothy Milne, Nancy Pond (Chair), Joanne Potee, and Jean Turner

“The Brick Church” Music Series
“The Brick Church” Music Series continues to offer outstanding musical events well into its ninth year since its
inception. Originally organized to feature our exceptional organ built by Richards, Fowkes Co., the series now
presents soloists, chamber ensembles and of course, organ concerts. The musicians’ fees are paid with the
donations given by people who appreciate the quality and variety of music available at The First Church of
Deerfield. We are fortunate to be able to find performers who appreciate the fine acoustics of the church, the
quality and beauty of the organ, the welcoming ambiance in the church, and are willing to accept a lower fee in
order to perform in Deerfield.
Concert artists for the 2012-2013 Season:
February 4, 2013- Harry Huff, organ
March 10, 2013-Christopher Houlihan, organ
Concert artists for the 2013-2014 Season:
October 13, 2013-Ensemble Schumann, piano, viola, oboe
December 8, 2013-Thomas Pousont, organ
Receipts at the door for the above concerts netted over $3,000 for the Church Operating Budget.
Concert artists for the remainder of the 2013-2014 Season
February 9, 2014-Estela Olevsky, piano,
March 2, 2014- Hans-Ola Ericsson, organ
We are indebted to the following volunteers who have helped with their talents and labor to insure that these
concerts run smoothly: Marc Dancer, Elaine Anderson, Pam Bensen, Joe and Nancy Durham, Peter Jones,
Linda and Carter MacDonald, Dorothy Milne, Carole Pennock, Nancy Pond, Joanne Potee, Dorothy Shippee,

Mission Committee Annual Report
The mission committee continued its benevolence projects throughout 2013 with the following members:
Elaine Anderson, Nancy Durham, Dorothy Milne (Chair), Bette Schmitt, Linda Spencer and Kathie Williams.
Projects for the year are summarized below:
FRANKLIN COUNTY COMMUNITY MEALS PROGRAM: In 2013 we provided three meals at the Second
Congregational Church in Greenfield. Monetary and food donations allowed us to have ample food for each
meal which serves up to 80 people each time. Church members and Bement School students volunteered as
servers for the meals. Three meals are scheduled again for 2014.
CANNED GOODS Sunday: The first Sunday of every month the church school members collect canned
goods from members for our local food pantry. Jennifer Williams sends out an e-mail reminder each month to
members. Pam and Ben Bensen delivered the food.
ADOPT-A-FAMILY: Church members provided gifts and meals for four families in Franklin County through the
Adopt-a-Family program at Christmas. Initial sign-ups were done at the Seder and all the gifts were covered at
that event. Mission members delivered the gifts to St. James Church on the appointed date.
2013 Annual Report- The First Church of Deerfield
Page 18
CASSEROLE AND PRAYER SHAWL MISSION: The mission committee coordinates meals for needy
parishioners when the need arises. In addition, parishioners continue to knit prayer shawls to keep on hand for
the minister to deliver to those in need.
SPRING SOCIAL: The mission committee partnered with the Church Life committee to sponsor a Spring
Social at the Pennock’s home in early May. Church members and friends were invited for a pot luck lunch
following the church service. Mary Clark provided entertainment for the children while lawn games were
enjoyed by all the families. The drawing for the Claire Murray rug was done after selling raffle tickets during the
month before the social.
SOUP SALES: The committee continued selling a variety of soups during January with the proceeds
benefiting the ARC of Franklin County. In addition, we posted a list of kitchen items needed by the ARC and
we collected about $350.00 worth of goods which were delivered to the ARC.
CRAFT FAIR BREAKFAST: For the second time the mission committee served breakfast for vendors at the
PVMA Fall Craft Fair. Because of inclement weather, we were only able to serve breakfast on Sat. morning.
Proceeds were sent through the International Rescue Committee to benefit Syrian refugees.
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: The mission committee is sponsoring 2 or 3 special collections per year to benefit
mostly local organizations. In 2013 we collected to benefit the NELCWIT organization on Mother’s Day.
CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: The special Christmas Eve collection of $250.00 benefited the Center for Self
Reliance, Community Action.
WALKATHON: Pam and Ben Bensen participated in the Walkathon to benefit Meals on Wheels, taking the
Koyama boys with them.
