Next ESAC meeting:
July 10th 2014
The Garner Orchid Fen is an environmentally diverse and sensitive area
near Plamondon, home to a number of rare orchids and other unique
plant species. Jennifer Okrainec from Alberta Parks gave a presentation
to ESAC on the Fen at their last meeting. ESAC discussed the potential
impact of a proposed development nearby. Alberta Parks committed to
posting signage around the Fen notifying residents and visitors about
the sensitive area. ESAC is dedicated to protecting the Fen and its
diverse plant species. Aaron Davies, of the Alberta Wilderness
Association, will be leading a tour of the Orchid Fen area on June 22,
2014. If you would like to register, please click here:

ESAC is looking into becoming a Wetland Mitigation Agency (WMA). A
WMA oversees the restoration of wetlands that have been drained or
altered due to development. The agency is responsible for collecting
funds from developers to restore wetlands, and supervising the
restoration, maintenance and future sustainability of the restored
wetlands.
•
Aquality presented to ESAC on May 15 with an overview of past
projects. Aquality was responsible for the County’s Riparian Setback
Matrix Model, Watershed Management Plan, and Wetland Policy.
Recommendations for the future were also discussed.
•
ESAC is currently working on: carrying out the first five-year review of
the Watershed Management Plan; completing the Wetland Policy;
implementing a revised County Green plan (both community and
corporate); looking at incorporating the Red Deer Brook plan into the
West Area Structure plan; and ensuring environmental issues are
addressed in the Land Use Bylaw.
