Efficiency and competitiveness: the challenge for the E.ON Group.
In order to continue playing a leading role in a rapidly
changing market, E.ON has embarked on a path of
transformation from being a primarily European utility
company to being a global provider of specialised energy
solutions. “Cleaner & Better Energy” is the name of the
strategic direction adopted by the Group with the aim of
improving its performance in terms of efficiency, innovation
and impact on the environment, and providing its
customers with solutions that are sustainable,
high-quality and affordable. In line with this strategy, the
Group has initiated major changes in its structure and

approach to business, with a focus on the most competitive
and strategic activities, including distributed generation, as
well as a presence in markets outside Europe, where energy
demand is rapidly increasing.
Strengthened by its significant presence in generating
electricity from conventional sources in Russia and
renewables in the United States, E.ON signed partnership
agreements with major operators in Brazil (MPX) and
Turkey (Sabanci Group) in 2012.

E.ON in Italy
Energy and value for national competitiveness
With an installed capacity of about 6 GW from conventional and renewable sources, and about
900,000 clients overall between power and gas, E.ON is one of the leading energy companies in
Italy in the generation and sale of power and gas.
The presence of E.ON in Italy
E.ON has had a presence in Italy since 2000. Initially active
in the sale of power to large industrial customers, in the
years that followed, the Group consolidated its business by
starting to distribute and sell gas, and extending the sale of
electricity to residential customers.
In 2008, E.ON made its entrance into generation with the
acquisition of 80% of Endesa Italy, becoming a major player
in the energy market. In September 2008, E.ON launched
the 805 MW combined-cycle power plant of Livorno Ferraris,
the first built by the company in Italy, followed in 2010 by
the cutting-edge 814 MW combined-cycle power station
in Scandale in Calabria. Also in 2010, the sale of the gas
distribution activities of E.ON Italy was completed.
Press Kit 2014
Today E.ON’s activities are concentrated on electricity
production, and the sale and trading of electricity and gas.
E.ON is also engaged in the construction and management
of major infrastructure for the supply of natural gas such
as the TAP pipeline in partnership with other relevant
international players. The Floating Regasification Storage
Unit OLT offshore LNG in Livorno has just been completed
by E.ON and Iren and had entered into the commercial
start up at the end of 2013.

Conventional generation
E.ON’s range of thermoelectric power stations in Italy
includes six plants in Piedmont, Lombardy, Calabria, Sicily
and Sardinia, with a total capacity of over 5 GW.
The gas combined-cycle plant at Tavazzano, in the Province
of Lodi (Lombardy), with a net installed capacity of 1,440
MW; the gas combined-cycle plant at Ostiglia, in the
province of Mantua (Lombardy) with an installed capacity
of 1,137 MW; the thermoelectric power station of Fiume
Santo, in the province of Sassari (Sardinia), with a capacity
of about 600 MW; the gas-turbine open-cycle plant at
Trapani, in Sicily, with an installed capacity of 213 MW.
The power station at Livorno Ferraris, in the Province of
Vercelli (Piedmont), in operation since 2008, was the first
power plant built by E.ON in Italy. The combined-cycle
gas-steam plant (75% E.ON, 25% BKW) with an installed
capacity of 805 MW, is one of the most efficient gas-fired
plants in Europe, with a level of output equivalent to almost
58%. Opened in the spring of 2010, the Scandale power
station, in the Province of Crotone (Calabria), has two
combined gas-steam cycles, that can potentially generate
together, with a total capacity of 814 MW. The power station
(50% E.ON, 50% A2A) has a net output of 56% and it adopts
a variety of technical solutions to optimise the use of
natural resources and reduce environmental impact, such
as the ‘zero liquid discharge’ system, which allows the reuse
of all waste water, including in part rainwater and reducing
to a minimum the intake of water from the outside.
E.ON is constantly seeking to improve the production and
environmental performance of its facilities. In particular,
the company is taking measures aimed at increasing the
efficiency and performance of its sites using traditional
sources, improving the flexibility of the plants to achieve a
more effective response to the demand for electricity that
comes from the electricity market, with benefits for both
the grid and the environment.

In 2011, E.ON launched an innovative program of
technical development of gas turbines and combustion
control systems, aimed at improving the environmental
and technical performance of its facilities. The project,
developed in collaboration with General Electric, aims
in particular at increasing the efficiency of combinedcycle gas turbines, improving energy efficiency and
increasing flexibility in the start-up phases and reducing
emissions into the atmosphere. The programme includes
the upgrading of the turbines of the power stations at
Ostiglia and Tavazzano. The company has also completed
a modernisation programme at the Trapani power station,
which has allowed the plant to increase its productive
capacity and achieve a higher level of efficiency and
reduced environmental impact. In addition to improving
performance, this renovation of the plant allows the power
station to play an important role in providing stability for
the electricity grid and in the development of renewables
in the area, balancing a production of electricity that, by
the very nature of renewable energy sources, is difficult to
programme.

Hydro
The hydroelectric plant in Terni, a flagship of efficiency and
environmental sustainability, has 16 stations and has a
maximum capacity of 531 MW.
On average, the plant produces about 1.3 TWh per year,
sufficient to meet the energy needs of about 500,000 Italian
households. At the end of 2013, the renovation of the plant
was completed, which involved 26 hydroelectric production
groups for 11 of the stations of the plant. The project, in
which E.ON invested approximately 200 million euros, led to
an improvement in efficiency of between 2% and 4%.
Renewables
Hydroelectric plant in Terni
Wind, solar and biomass are the technologies on which the
Group’s renewable energy portfolio focuses in Italy.
E.ON in Italy has an overall capacity from renewable
sources of approximately 379 MW, of which 328 MW is in
wind energy, with 10 wind farms operating in Sardinia,
Sicily, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and Tuscany, and 50.6
MW from photovoltaic farms in Lombardy, Piedmont, Lazio
and Sardinia.
Since December 2012, at the Fiume Santo power station,
a plant has been fully operational for the storage and
crushing of biomass used as fuel for co-firing in the
boilers of Group 3 and 4 of the plant. About a year earlier,
Unit 3 came into operation and then biomass power
was extended to Group 4. The work was completed in
September 2012. Today testing is being carried out to
evaluate the use of wood chips or pellets. The plant burns
up to 8 tons of biomass an hour per line for a total of about
110 thousand tons per year which guarantees a saving
of 350 thousand metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.
Currently, the fuel used is made from the shells of palm
seeds, PKS (Palm Kernel Shells).

Gas supply
Strategic infrastructure for the security of the supply in Italy and in Europe
The regasification terminal “FSRU Toscana” of OLT Offshore LNG off the coast of Tuscany
E.ON has been active for years in strengthening the
infrastructural system of gas in Italy through strategically
important projects to ensure a wide and diversified access
to this energy resource. With the completion of these
projects. E.ON aims to help strengthen the role of Italy
in Europe’s gas supply, and support the reduction in the
price of natural gas and therefore the cost of electricity
for households and businesses, a key element for national
competitiveness.
With Iren, E.ON holds an equal share of 47% of the control
of the offshore regasification plant OLT Offshore LNG, which
came into operation in late 2013. The terminal – located
off the coast of Livorno – has a regasification capacity of
3.75 billion cubic metres a year, about 4% of the national
demand.

The Group is also a shareholder in the TAP project (along
with BP, SOCAR, Statoil, Fluxys, Total and Axpo), which
involves the construction of an underwater pipeline from
Greece to the southern coast of Italy (Melendugno, LE). TAP
has been selected by the consortium which operates the
Azerbaijani gas field of Shah Deniz II to transport gas from
the Caspian region to the European markets.
E.ON also features among the operators promoting the
construction of the TGL gas pipeline, which will link
Germany to Italy via Austria, allowing the transit of gas
coming from both the north (Norway and Russia) and the
south (the Caspian Sea, North Africa, LNG).
10

Responsibility
E.ON’s commitment to safety, the environment and the territory
E.ON has been engaged for some time in promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability,
the safety of its employees and the development of the territory in which it operates.
Environmental sustainability
Alongside its commitment to reduce the environmental
impact of its activities and production sites, and
the development of solutions for saving energy and
reducing energy consumption, E.ON seeks to encourage
the dissemination of an eco-sustainable culture in the
community and the productive sectors of the country,
supporting those who promote the efficiency and the
development of new technologies. One element of this is
the “E.ON Energia Awards”, the annual award for companies
that have distinguished themselves by a more efficient and
conscious use of energy.
The Group has launched a programme aimed at achieving
the international certification for the health and safety
of workers, OHSAS 18001, for all its power plants in Italy.
In this way, E.ON intends to provide its entire Italian
productive force, which has already obtained EMAS
registration for environmental performance, with a tool
capable of improving and verifying the level of safety in
their plants.
Safety
With the motto “Safety F1rst - Zero è possibile”, E.ON has
chosen to promote, through educational activities and
communication, a corporate culture of safety in which all
workers – both employees and contractors – are personally
committed to maintaining a safe working environment and
taking care of each other. With the “Slips, trips and falls”
campaign launched in 2013, the company is following this
path with special attention to slips, bumps and tripping,
among the most common causes of accidents at work.

The community and the territory
As an operator in the Italian market, E.ON believes an
integral element of its mission is a commitment in favour
of the growth of the territory covered and support for
communities in need.
The company committed itself to supporting the regions
of Emilia Romagna and the Abruzzi, which suffered
earthquakes in 2009 and in 2012 respectively.
This year, the company contributed to the creation of a
green area at the new school in San Felice sul Panaro
(MO), one of the towns hardest hit by the earthquake,
pledging to enhance the garden areas of the new school
of the new “Maria Montessori” nursery school with hedges,
trees and flower beds in a project called “I Giardini della
Solidarietà”, which opened last September with an event of
strong symbolic value, in the presence of the Minister for
Integration Cécile Kyenge.
The project is part of the undertaking made by the company
in favour of the people of the provinces of the Emilia
Romagna, Veneto and Lombardy affected by the earthquake
in the spring of 2012. In particular, during the Christmas
period last year, E.ON participated in the “€1/1kg un aiuto
per rinascere” initiative, promoted by the Parmigiano
Reggiano Consortium, making a significant contribution to
the charity fund “Committee of earthquake-affected dairies”
of Parmigiano Reggiano, one of the PDO products which for
centuries has represented the excellence of Made in Italy.
Similar initiatives have been undertaken by the company
in the Abruzzi, following the earthquake of 2009, where the

reconstruction plan for the areas most severely affected by
the earthquake was carried out along with other private
companies, German government agencies and other
donors. In particular, in the town of Onna in 2010, the
construction of the “Onna House” was completed, a new
civic centre built following criteria of energy efficiency
and reducing environmental impact. Also in Onna, E.ON
participated in the completion of a new multi-purpose
energy-saving building, which will include a medical clinic,
an exhibition on the history of the town, an educational and
training workshop for young people and a literary cafe.
14
Training of young people
The support for the reconstruction of the school in San
Felice sul Panaro in Emilia Romagna and the building of
educational and recreational buildings in Onna in the
Abruzzi, are also part of the special consideration that E.ON
has for young people.
E.ON in Italy intends to contribute to educating the new
generations, who are the energy consumers of the future,
in a responsible use of energy.
With this in mind, E.ON has developed a series of
educational tools for schools, including the
www.scuola.eon.it portal which offers many interactive
educational courses for children of different ages. The
portal also offers training courses on how to save energy in
the home and the free book and DVD “Discover the world
of energy” can be ordered there.
Thanks to the support of E.ON a green area was provided for the
nursery of the new school campus in San Felice sul Panaro (MO)
www.acqua.eon.it is instead an interactive site to explore
the technology and the history of hydroelectric power,
for a long time the principal source for the production of
electricity in our country and still today the primary source
as regards the production of renewable energy.
