Greenfield Avenue Suite 201. 2015 Budget In planning the Downtown West Allis Business Improvement District’s (DWABID) 2015 Budget, the Board of Directors had to make some serious cutbacks. As most of you know, DWABID is funded mainly by a special assessment based on the value of the properties in the Downtown. With the value of the building decreasing and the Board of Directors not wanting to increase DWABID dues they needed to make the following major cuts to the 2015 budget: • Relocation Assistance will not be offered. Currently we did request funding from CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) from the City of West Allis. If we are granted these funds, we will in turn seek businesses to our area thus creating jobs. • Signage Assistance will not be offered. The City of West Allis offers some signage assistance with a façade loan or grant. • Marketing Assistance will not be offered. Until the organization can increase their reserves this item will be on hold. In a survey conducted earlier this year, those business owners that did respond, wanted to keep snow removal from our crosswalks and street/sidewalk clean up. Some funds from these two categories have been reduced, but the project will still be offered. If you have any questions regarding the 2015 DWABID Budget, please contact DWABID President, Chet Parker at 414-475-1212 Do you have something you want to share in the “The Downtowner?” Articles for the January/February/March 2015 newsletter are due by Friday, December 12 , 2014. Brick Planters project! What is a PEDLET? Our brick planters project will soon be completed!! A total of 35 brick planters will add color to the Avenue. This year we tried potato ivy with geraniums and our office staff received positive response from both business owners and visitors to the area. Losing our contract with MATC, we hired a contractor to finish the remaining 12 brick planters. This has left our budget short. In order to add evergreen boughs for our winter display we are looking for 16 - $25 sponsorships to purchase and decorate the brick planters for the holiday season. Please contact our office at 414-774-2676, if you are interested in sponsoring a brick planter this Holiday Season. A pedlet is a structure which acts as a sidewalk extension beyond the existing curb line. Pedlet acts as a new route for pedestrians. Guidelines: • Only allowed in West Allis Downtown • Permitted only for food and drink establishments • Used from March to November • Designed for easy removal • Must be ADA Compliant • Pedlet path shall under no circumstances be less than 48” wide minimum. Once on the pedlet’s deck surface, the Pedlet Path shall be 36” wide minimum. When asked by the City of West Allis for permission for the pedlets, WisDOT allowed them since the flow of traffic was not inhibited in any way. Remember, the wooden structures are not meant for dining, they are for pedestrian use only. The City of West Allis feels Pedlets reflect the diversity and creativity of the people and organizations who sponsor and design them. They also reflect the City’s commitment to encouraging walking and biking, creating great streets, and strengthening our communities. Security Cameras DWABID at Settlers’ Weekend Eden Garden & Pets 1439 S. 70th Gets a new Awning!! DWABID Table At Hank Aaron 5K Walk/Run Have you noticed the cameras on the traffic lights? These cameras have been proven very effective in helping to deter crime and also helping to solve crimes. The West Allis Police Department will be able to monitor these cameras. This will add security to area homes and our business improvement district. Our Design Committee is currently seeking additional funds to add surveillance cameras to the alley/municipal parking lots. We hope these cameras will aid in apprehending individuals that break into cars, loiter or are engaging in illegal activities. Come see these cameras, in action, at our Annual Town Hall meeting scheduled for mid-February 2015. Urban Joe Café 7028 W. Greenfield Mis Suenos 7335 W.
