November, 2014
Dear brothers and sisters in
Christ,
During these troubled and
unsettled times, I invite you to
sense the true comfort and joy
that Christ brings in a four-part
sermon and worship series in our
Advent Saturday and Sunday
worship services. Each week we
will discover the different types of
comfort Christ comes to bring
(revealed in Isaiah 40) and
experience the resulting joy that
can be lived out in the season of
Advent.
November 30 – The Peace of
Christ (Isaiah 40:1-2): True peace
comes only through Jesus Christ
and the forgiveness that he
brings. He ends warfare without
and within. He is the Prince of
Peace.
December 7 - The Pardon of
Christ (Isaiah 40:3-5): We
prepare the way of the Lord
through repentance, as the
forgiveness we receive through
Christ makes the rough places of
our lives smooth.
December 14 - The Presence of
Christ (Isaiah 40:6-9): We
remember that Christ is present
with us now and that he will come
again in glory on the Last Day.
December 21 – The Power of
Christ (Isaiah 40:10-11): God
himself came to live among us
and be our Savior, but his power
was displayed in the weakness
and humility of the manger and
the cross.
“Comfort, comfort now my
people; tell of peace!” so says our
God. Comfort those who sit in
darkness,
mourning
under
sorrow’s load. To God’s people
now proclaim that God’s pardon
waits for them! Tell them that
their war is over; God will reign in
peace forever. ELW #256

COATS FOR THE COLD
Through the month of November, the Service
Committee will continue to collect coats,
gloves, scarfs, and hats that you may have in
abundance. Just imagine what it must be like
to be cold through the winter; how blessed we
are to have things in abundance. After you place your
“warmth” on the tables in the narthex, we will send your gifts
to the ones who are in need of your generosity. It's what
God created us to do.
BREAD OF LIFE

Ford and Heinz team up for tomato cars.
“It may sound like an unlikely pairing, but condiment king
Heinz and car maker Ford are joining forces,” said Gregory
Wallace in CNN.com. The two companies have announced
a joint project “to make car parts out of ketchup by-products”,
including the peels, stems, and seeds from the 2 million tons
of tomatoes Heinz processes each year. The tomato byproducts will be processed into “small, dry pellets that can be
used in manufacturing. The partnership is Ford's latest foray
into food by-products, since the car maker previously
partnered with Coca-Cola to acquire recycled plastics for use
in seat cushions, seat backs, and door panels. In this
instance, dried tomato skins, for example, can be made into
wiring brackets and cup holders.

Christmas Poinsettias
The Christmas season is closing in on us and that means it’s time to
order poinsettias. We are limiting the order to 40 plants this year. On
November 8 the sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board
across from the office. Plants are $6.00 and the purchase supports
programming at Cumberland High School. We need an envelope with
your name written on it, number of poinsettias ordered and please
include either cash or a check marked “poinsettias”. Orders need to be placed by November
30. Feel free to take your poinsettia home after the Christmas Eve service. Questions? See
Betty House 456-6746.
Health Tip from the Wellness Committee
By Lynne Schwaberow
There are two kinds of
cholesterol: HDL "healthy"
cholesterol and LDL "lousy"
cholesterol.
There are FIVE lifestyle
strategies
for
Lowering
Cholesterol.
1. Lose weight. As little
as 5-10 pounds can
make a difference!
2. Eat heart-healthy =
more whole grains,
fruit, veggies, and
foods rich in omega-3
fatty acids like fish,
walnuts,
and
flax
seed. High levels of
LDL cholesterol can
be lowered with oats,
red wine, salmon,
nuts,
beans,
tea,
chocolate,
spinach
avocado, garlic, and
olive oil.
3. Exercise 30 minutes
every day.
4. Don’t smoke.
5. Have moderate use of
alcohol. It has been
linked to higher levels

MILD depression can be

Some suffer enough to be

Weekend #11
What a joy it was for us to
be part of the team and
to
experience
another
KAIROS weekend. Thirty
five team members and
twenty-nine residents of
Bledsoe County Correction
Complex spent three Christfilled days together, singing,
praying and praising God.
One resident, who attended
because of the good food
and to give KAIROS a try,
gave his heart to Jesus
before the weekend was
over.
Team members gave short
talks each day, providing
the residents the tools they
need to give direction to
their lives and to adopt a
Christ-like lifestyle while
they are incarcerated and
after they are released. The
participants were “blown
away” by the attention they

weekend.

for our next weekend.

To all of our friends and members of Christ
Lutheran Church,
Sue and I would like to thank you all, once
again, from the bottom of our hearts for all
the support, visits, cards, and dinners for
Sue while I was going through Rehab. My

good hands of our Lord and Savior, and all
the prayers and support I have received from

Thank you again and

Doug, and congregation for
their help and all the cards
and flowers that decorated my room at
rehab for 2-1/2 weeks, plus all the prayers
and visits.
