It exists to help urban churches of any denomination to respond to the challenges in their areas. They are especially concerned with Bible engagement in ’traditional tabloid’ (’nonbook’, ’oral learners’, or ’text-shy’) cultures. The Bible has plenty to say – more than we’ll ever know – about our lives if we know how to read it and apply it… if we know how to UNLOCK it! This session gives us some resources to do this. 7 An Introduction To The Hebrew Of The Bible The course consists of four interactive and thought-provoking sessions 1 How does the Hebrew speak and think? 2 How does the Hebrew communicate in writing? 3 How did the Hebrew writers intend the Bible to be studied? 4 How did Jesus read, use and teach the Old Testament? This will include looking at idioms, parallelisms, word play, images, word and phrase association and five different ways of learning. These sessions are led by John Barnett is a Jewish believer in Jesus. He read Theology at Oxford. He has taught on how to study the Bible from a Hebrew perspective for the past 20 years. This series of sessions will look at the 18-30 generation: how to attract them and retain them in your church, how to preach with them, how to develop them as leaders in the life of the church and how to send them on and out as pioneers of new things. Christian Selvaratnam is an ordained pioneer minister at St Michael le Belfrey church in York and the leader of G2, a large fresh expression of church where 70% of those attending are under the age of 30. For the last eight years G2 has been an experiment in learning how to proclaim the gospel afresh to a younger generation. The Jesus Deck Reaching people with the Good News of Jesus Christ The Jesus Deck is a set of 52 cards originally designed as a Christian education tool in the 1970’s. They provide a useful tool for speaking to people about Jesus Christ in a flexible and accessible way in one to one situation. People who are seeking to find out more about Jesus could have a conversation based around the cards. Groups using the Jesus Deck have grown up independently all over the British Isles. Penny Horseman, a Church Army Evangelist has used the cards in her work with people in all kinds of situations and has trained others to use them. We have the benefit of her expertise in the following sessions: Monday 17th March 2014 / 1.30pm-4.00pm Beverley Minster, Peter Harrison Room or Monday 17th March 2014 / 7.00pm-9.30pm St Nicholas Church Dunnington, near York Tuesday 18th March 2014 / 10.00am-12.30pm Trinity Centre, North Ormesby, Middlesbrough 10 The Hebrew Background To Holy Week Day By Day A two-session course to illuminate our journey towards Easter, our devotions and our preaching. Led by: Revd David Charlton, Curate at Whorlton with Carlton and Faceby Appreciative Inquiry Saturday 7th June 2014 / 10.00am-12.30pm Sowerby Parochial Church Hall Tuesday 10th June 2014 / 10.00am-12.30pm Peter Harrison Room, Beverley Minster Nothing is more certain than change. The question is not whether or not change will happen, but how will it be handled. Appreciative Inquiry is becoming well known as an approach which can generate change in structures and relationships. Usually we focus on finding the problem, doing a diagnosis, and seeking a solution. If we look 12 for problems, we will find them and we tend to emphasise and intensify them. AI seeks not the problem, but rather what is right in an organisation, what is working that we want more of. It is a collaborative and participatory approach to identifying and building on the life giving forces of an organization when it is performing at its best. It can also improve relationships! What can this mean for our churches? How has it been used by others? Come and find out at either. Led by: Revd Canon Terry Joyce, Diocesan Training Team Praying With Icons Monday 7th July 2014 / 7.30pm-9.00pm Icons, often referred to as ’windows into heaven’, have long been a valued approach to prayer for those in the Eastern Orthodox tradition. In this session Andrew will share with us his personal experiences of creating and using Icons and will explore how they can enrich our prayer lives, being not simply a picture but rather sign or perhaps a “sacrament” of what it represents. Revd Andrew de Smet is the Archbishop’s Coordinator and Adviser in Pastoral Care and a tutor in personal and Spiritual Direction at St Bede’s Pastoral Centre. Venue: TBA 13 Generous Churches Study Course Is your church growing? Are the people in your church growing in discipleship? The Diocese of York is committed to being a family of growing churches, and so we have produced a Study Course for 2014 (ideal for Lent) to help churches grow. It has been written by David Butterfield (the Archdeacon of the East Riding) and edited by Gavin Wakefield (the Director of Training, Mission and Ministry). There are five sessions, which look at how individuals and churches can grow in Christ-likeness, Influence, Partnership, Numbers, and finishing with Commitment, giving participants a chance to recommit themselves to Christ and to serving him. The material for each session is a mix of group activities and short input on a CD from David Butterfield. Some of the group activities include: • discussing spiritual disciplines that enable us to put ourselves in a place where Christ-likeness can develop in us • looking at the way that people work in partnership in your church • imagining what Jesus would say if he conducted an OFSTED inspection in the diocese, deanery, or church • eating crisps! The study course includes a leaders’ book, the CD, suggested songs for worship, and a booklet tailored for participants. The leaders’ pack is £3, and participant’s booklets are 50p each. To order your copies, fill in the attached order form and send to Diocesan House. The materials will be posted in November. As well as the Study Course, there will be a new sermon series on the five areas of growing for the five weeks after Epiphany, and information on courses and resources your church can use to grow. Both of these resources will be available for free later in the year on this website. 14 Technophobe No More! • • • • • Afraid to go near a computer in case you catch a virus? Do you remember when Apples were eaten? Not sure whether a ’memory stick’ is a mis-function of the brain? Do you think that a Facebook is used by the Police to identify criminals? Do you think that Powerpoint is being aggressive with your finger? The list could go on … but you may not be quite that technophobic, just frustrated that others seem to know more than you. Well, we may have the answer, because in this diocese, there are people who struggle to get to grips with technology and there are people who don’t. It seems pretty straightforward (at least as an idea) to do something about it. All we need is for those who need help to say so and those who are prepared to give help to offer. What could be simpler? So let’s try it! If you feel that being a bit more computer savvy could help you in your ministry, let us know. You may wish to ask for help to get to grips with Powerpoint, spreadsheets, how to get the best from a tablet or Ipad, learning about Clouds or any number of other things. Let Cathy know, and we will link you up with someone who can help you, without blinding you with science, either one-to-one or as part of a small group, Meanwhile, those who feel that God is calling them to help one or more people in this way will also be queuing up to let Cathy know, or we will come and find you! Cathy and Terry will broker the links to move things forward. See Cathy’s contact details at the back of this booklet. Our program, which art in memory, Hello be thy name, thy operating system come, thy commands be done, at the Printer, as it is on the screen. Give us this day our daily data and forgive us our input/output errors, as we forgive those whose circuits are faulty. Lead us not into frustration. And deliver us from power surges. For this is the algorithm, application and solution. Looping forever and ever. Amen. 15 Recognised Parish Assistants What are Recognised Parish Assistants? In developing this role within the Diocese, the vision is to help to make real the Body of Christ, with gifts to share for the Christian community and in the wider mission to which we are called. The Diocese wants to encourage and develop lay ministry from the ground upwards, affirming and giving confidence through ’recognising’ a sense of call. The training currently seeks to develop lay ministry in the areas of either pastoral care, mission, planning and leading worship or work with young people. RPA’s share in the public ministry of the local church, as they serve their local parishes, working with their parish clergy, and other licensed ministers (Readers and Church Army officers) seeking to encourage and develop the gifts of others. What does ’recognised’ mean? Recognition is at a local level, but can be ratified by the Suffragan Bishop, as is done for Eucharistic assistants. The recognition is for three years, and renewable at the end of that time. It is not transferable from one benefice to another, unless the working agreement includes a provision for working across named benefices within a Deanery under the overall supervision of the Rural Dean. A simple working agreement is provided to facilitate good practice in supervision and a short liturgy which can be used to commission RPA’s at a Sunday service. 16 What is the training? The scheme is suitable both for those who are already engaged in ministry and need some further training, and for those who are about to take on ministry for the first time through the local church. Usually, it involves 16 meetings, typically in two units of 8 weeks which are interspersed with breaks. It is a scheme to encourage the vision of every member ministry rather than simply a course. Who can do the Course? Participants should be commended by their incumbent and be supported by their PCC. They can come as individuals or as a small group from a church or benefice. There’s a fee of £50 for each person towards the expenses of the Scheme. We hope that PCC’s would pay this fee as a sign of their support and continuing commitment to these lay ministers. What’s the difference between a RPA and a Reader? Quite a lot! Readers typically train for 3 to 4 years, are licensed and deployed by the Bishop, wear robes, lead worship, preach regularly and can potentially share varied responsibilities with their clergy. After the 16 week course, RPA’s are recognised by their parish or benefice for a specifically negotiated role. Those who opt for the worship stream will typically contribute to the planning of worship and be involved in leading worship alongside others. Where do I find out more? Courses usually take place in Deaneries. Three have completed. There are currently six courses either planned or running. There will be more next year. Consult the ’Training Section of the Diocesan website or ring the Training Administrator at the Diocesan Office for more information or to request application forms: Tel: 01904 699504 or [email protected] 17 York School of Ministry From September 2013 the York School of Ministry (YSOM) will provide training for authorised, Licensed Lay Ministry across the diocese. Are you looking for insights to help and encourage you in your journey with God? Are you desiring gifts to aid your walk alongside fellow pilgrims or those who are searching for God? Or, are you sensing a calling to exercise a ministry of spiritual direction? If you can answer YES to some or all of these questions, then the SPIDIR course may well be right for you. Each course year begins with a 24hr residential. The Year 1 residential introduces participants to the Myers Briggs Personality Test Indicator, and the Year 2 residential is a retreat on ’prayer’. The monthly daytime sessions will explore a wide variety of themes, including different Christian traditions. These enable us to draw on the riches and experience of the past in order to enable us to engage with the real issues and problems of life as it is today. 22 The next course, beginning in January 2014, meets for one day a month, usually from 10am to 3pm, and takes two years to complete. Sessions are led by visiting speakers, as well as members of the SPIDIR support group. SPIDIR courses have been run in this Diocese for a number of years and have proved to be successful in nurturing ministries of spiritual guidance among those who have attended. For more information on SPIDIR, the forthcoming course and the costs involved, please contact the Revd Adam Reed on 01751 474858 or [email protected]. Several people who completed SPIDIR or other spirituality training are available to lead for parish or deanery or other groups. Quiet days/afternoons/evenings, days of guided prayer, retreats in daily life, ways of praying. These might be considered for a Lent or Advent event of course or at any other time of year. Public theology is about engaging in dialogue with a range of communities on issues wider than narrowly defined religious matters. This series of lectures aims to promote public conversation and to contribute to the formation of personal decisions and collective policy-making in economic, political and social spheres. It is also an ecumenical project that seeks to exchange insights between academic and religious traditions and to build bridges between church and other religious groups. The lectures relate faith to public concerns including politics, economics, contemporary culture, religion and spirituality, society and globalisation, local and global Christianity. General information The lectures are free but by ticket only which must be booked in advance and will be held at York Minster and at York St John University. Disabled access is available but please mention when booking. Please see www.yorksj.ac.uk/eborlectures for details. 2013-2014 The Morality of Austerity We live in the ’Age of Austerity’. The global financial crisis has left governments with levels of debt and budget deficits which are unsustainable in the long term and most have opted to reduce public services and welfare payments as a consequence. Austerity, however, adversely affects the most vulnerable members of society, changes public expectations and potentially alters the relationship between the citizen and the state. In the Ebor Lectures for 2013-14 we take the question raised by Jim Wallis, the American theologian and activist, ’What would Jesus cut?’ and use it as a way of evaluating economic austerity from a theological and moral perspective. Is austerity the only way of addressing the need for deficit-reduction? What might the moral alternatives to austerity be? And are we really all in this together? ’The naked emperor: challenging the ideology of deficiency’ Wednesday 19th March 2014 / York Minster Dr Kathy Galloway, Head of Christian Aid Scotland 26 ’In it together or in it for the money?’ Wednesday 21st May 2014 / York Minster Mr Larry Elliott, Economics Editor, The Guardian ’The morality of the food parcel: Emergency food as a response to austerity’ Wednesday 4th June 2014 / York St John University Temple Hall Dr Helen Cameron, Head of Public Affairs, The Salvation Army. ’The common good in an era of austerity’ Wednesday 9th July 2014 / York St John University Fountains Lecture Theatre Mr Jon Cruddas MP, Labour Member of Parliament for Dagenham & Rainham, Member of Shadow Cabinet. These are easy-to-use ecumenical courses, specially designed for groups of Christians from different traditions to study together. Although the most popular time to use our courses is Lent, they are not ’Lent-specific’ and so can be used at any time of year. The course materials comprise a course booklet, and a CD which brings the voices and opinions of prominent Christian thinkers into the discussion group. www.yorkcourses.co.uk / 01904 466516 York Courses, PO Box 343, York YO19 5YB EXPECTING CHRIST In this course for discussion groups and individuals we look at several moments in our faith and lives where a door opens and lets Christ in, catching the sense of expectancy which not only comes at the season of Advent, but throughout the year. In particular, we will be thinking about how Christ can surprise us and meet us in four distinct contexts: in family and community; in our own personal lives; in prayer; and in approaches to the end of life. BUILD ON THE ROCK (Matthew 7.24) Starts by looking at faith and doubt. Is it wrong – or is it normal and healthy – for a Christian to have doubts? Is there any evidence for a God who loves us? We hear from many witnesses. At the heart of a Christian answer stands Jesus himself. We consider his ’strange and beautiful story’ and reflect upon his teaching, his death, his resurrection and his continuing significance. 36 Diocesan Team members Director of Training, Mission and Ministry Oversight of the Team, advice on any aspect of the Team’s work, applications for CMD and Study Grants.
