The participants will be divided in groups of few people (3-5). 2 groups will have a similar list of 1-3 questions. Each group will have to find the answers by computer research. Questions will address use of regional data sources, OIE and FAO websites with regard to occurrence and distribution of FMD. The group work can also relate to a comparison of key elements in national contingency plans. One group will travel to a farm and the other will travel to a foot and mouth disease vaccine distribution point. Each group will be given some of the tasks listed under (a) to (e) below: 09:30 Field simulation exercise: Part 1 [Buses depart hotel at 07:30 and return at 18:30] All Morning a) b) c) d) e) f) Sample collection & biosecurity assessment Epidemiological investigation Sample preparation & interpretation of laboratory results Assess export approval & traceability systems Assess vaccination records & monitoring results Monitoring the vaccine cold chain O’Flaherty Workshop Discussion / Q&A All groups will under the supervision of a facilitator carry out the activities listed under (a) as to be performed during an FMD suspicion in real life. At the end of the morning session each group will discuss the activities that they have performed and agree on key learning points. During the lunch break the working groups will change locations. The group that was on the farm in the morning will travel to the vaccine distribution point and vice versa. In this way both groups will have an opportunity to carry out all of the activities listed above.
