Concept and plan of workshop:
Infectious diseases are an enormous burden in India. A sound approach to the prevention, diagnosis and appropriate
management of Infectious disease is the need of the day. Over the past decades, major advances in the field of
molecular biology, coupled with advances in multiplex Real time PCR technologies, have facilitated the development of
highly performing innovative comprehensive, low-cost, syndrome based tests for the diagnosis of various bacteria,
viruses and parasites together. Fast-track diagnostics is particularly specialized in symptom based disease approach as
different pathogens can cause similar clinical pictures for diagnosis of respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, sexually
transmitted infections, fever, rash and childhood infections, hepatitis, meningitis, infections of the immunosuppressed,
tropical fever and eye infections. The goal of this demonstration workshop is to provide the participants an
understanding on how clinical microbiologists can judiciously implement these Multiplex syndromic assays in various
settings and configurations for comprehensive multipathogen detection for early detection of respiratory pathogens and
gastroenteritis bugs. Following are key facts to justify syndromic approach in diagnosis.
1. Pneumonia in ITU is usually assumed to be due to bacteria but in fact can be caused by many viruses such as
rhinoviruses, flu, RSV, human Metapneumovirus.
2. 75% of all community gastroenteritis is caused by viruses.
3. Neonatal sepsis (e.g. parechoviruses and adenoviruses).
4. EBV and adenoviruses are routine, but often unexpected, causes of post transplant sepsis.
Dr.Amita Jain, a renowned expert for innovative diagnostics of novel viruses at KGMU, Lucknow shall be the Coordinator
for the workshop. Prof.William Carman, ex-Director NHS Scotland and CEO Fast track diagnostics Luxembourg will be the
invited resource person to discuss latest Molecular syndromic panel studies done at PERCH study(A Gates Funded Study)
and Foundation Merieux France. Dr. Kirshan Mohan would be the local facilitator at BSIR.
After attending this workshop, participants will learn and understand Syndromic approach for patient diagnosis and
strategies specific for respiratory virology and bacterial gastroenteritis screening in clinical samples using fourplex real
time PCR technology.
