Buchholz DECA Officers and Florida DECA VP Take Arizona Buchholz Advisor Mrs. Donna Martin along with Buchholz DECA president Sydney Steinberg, Executive VP Austin Dale, and Florida DECA State VP Wesley Lopez attended a National DECA Emerging Leaders Summit in Phoenix, Arizona, this past July. The Buchholz officers were able to expand their leadership skills with respect to managing our own Buchholz DECA chapter and the BHS DECA officer team. They visited the Grand Canyon National Park, ate at fantastic restaurants, and even played a game of pool with Paul Wardinski, the newly appointed Executive Director of DECA, Inc. Buchholz DECA President Sydney Steinberg shared, “My favorite part of the Arizona trip was being able to bond with Austin Dale, and I truly think this bond has helped us to create and now lead a more cohesive DECA officer team.” Steinberg enjoyed her time in Arizona with DECA members from Florida as well as members from all over the United States. One thing is for certain: The Arizona Emerging Leaders Summit was a trip to remember. Don’t be Afraid to Mix It Up with DECA From finance to food service to sports & entertainment marketing, from partner projects to individual role plays to written papers and speeches, there is a category for every DECA member to show his or her strengths. “The great thing about participating in DECA competition is that I am able to choose something new and interesting every year,” says Academy member and Chief Information Officer Haley Hayes. “I like that I can switch around and choose from a plethora of categories; my favorite so far has been Financial Team Decision Making.” Other DECA members like the idea that they can choose the same category as prior years, thereby building on prior knowledge and experience to increase their chances of winning at State. No matter which DECA category you choose, know that you can find something that you will like when you get out of your comfort zone. Try something new, be different! District Competition for testing events will be December 17-19; and the deadline for all written events is January 15. Lopez was elected for the 2014 -15 officer team at the State Leadership Conference in Orlando last March. He attended the Emerging Leaders Summit in Arizona in July where he was able to connect with the three other State VPs and discuss Chapter involvement and connectedness across Florida. Lopez also attended his first interstate meeting for State VPs on October 14. He could not reveal all of the exciting events planned for Florida DECA in the upcoming year, but he did plan chapter visits to other Florida high schools along with updating the Florida DECA website. Wesley says, “We’ve had a great start to the year with many promising upcoming events planned. I’m excited to be able to move forward as a member of Team 57.” Florida DECA news, information, and This Year’s Chapter Projects Buchholz DECA members have raiser to benefit the Einstein form of Dysautonomia), sched- a reputation for organizing and Montessori School, this project uled for October 23. conducting some outstanding involves a 5K Run at Haile Vil- Creative Marketing Project— chapter projects, and this year lage Center October 25. to assist in raising money for is no exception.
