Contents
The course is divided in three modules:
Module 1: Qualitative Methods – History and Paradigm,
Module 2: Practices of Qualitative Research,
Module 3: Research paper,
Module 1: Qualitative Methods – History and Paradigm
During the first part of the course the historical background and recent developments of
qualitative research methods are introduced. Basic ontological and epistemological
assumptions are discussed. Attention is also paid to research ethics, analytical procedures,
presentation and transferability of results.
Module 2: Practices of Qualitative Research
In order to gain a more in-depth understanding of qualitative research practice, different
qualitative traditions are presented during the second part of the course. What traditions
presented depend on the lecturers involved. For example, it could be ethnography, discourse
analysis, grounded theory, narrative analysis, and qualitative comparative analysis. This
module includes both lectures and practical exercises at the seminars
Module 3: Research paper
The third part of the course is dedicated to the individual research paper. In this paper are
the students expected to reflect on ontological and epistemological assumptions and/or to
practice qualitative analyses related to one or several of the traditions presented at the
course. The paper is presented and discussed at the final seminar.

Expected learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student is expected to:
- express knowledge of the historical background and recent developments in qualitative
research
- express knowledge about ontological and epistemological assumptions in qualitative
research
- express understanding of similarities and differences among qualitative research traditions
- express knowledge about research ethics
- apply relevant terminology within qualitative research
- discuss and motivate ontological and epistemological choices, in accordance with
designated research traditions
- independently review and compare different qualitative traditions
- independently review and valuate results in qualitative studies
- problematize ethical dilemmas in qualitative research
Required knowledge
Applicants are required to be registered at a PhD program at Umeå University.
Form of instruction
The course includes lectures and seminars. All seminars are mandatory and require
individual and/or collective contributions. All teaching will be in English.
Examination mode
The examination of the course consists of two parts. To pass module 1 and 2 it is mandatory
to participate in the seminars and to fulfil designated exercises. To pass module 3 it is
required to write an individual research paper, in accordance with instructions. It is also
required to present the paper at the final seminar, and to be discussant on one of the other
papers. Grading decisions are based on the individual student’s performance on all three
modules. However, the performance on module 3 will be of greatest importance
