BLACK MOUNT TAKE
DELIVERY OF THEIR
FIRST WESTERN STAR
NEW ISUZU FSR FOR

Ballarat based natural springwater
supplier, Black Mount, has
recently taken delivery of their first
Western Star – a 4864FS2 day cab
model fitted with a Detroit DD15
560Hp/1,850Lbft engine.
Recently appointed Jim’s Bins
franchisee Brian Chirgwin has
recently taken delivery of a new
Isuzu FSR 850 Long.
The company has 15 B-Double trucks/tankers in their fleet, a mix of
both 19 metre general access B-Doubles and 26 metre units.
The decision for Black Mount to purchase the Western Star came
as a result of a combination of factors including the detailed
spec requirements of the prime mover and the quality of service
and attention to detail given to the company through the product
evaluation period. In particular the assistance given by Westar
Sales representative James Leo was a stand out factor.
Black Mount Operations Manager, Karl McEwan, reports that he
was impressed with the service and product support offered by the
staff at Westar Derrimut and specifically in relation to the way they
were flexible with the scheduling of service work around Black
Mount’s varying workloads.
The Western Star was collected from Westar along with 19 metre
Tieman tankers on Monday the 25 of November and Karl reports
that the new Western Star looks super smart with its stainless drive
guards, bug deflector and headlight shrouds. Most importantly the
vehicle is performing above and beyond all expectations. Good
news all round!

Brian’s primary territory is central Doncaster but he also
covers a wide area stretching all the way from Croydon in
the east of Melbourne to the bayside suburb of Brighton.
Brian is involved with both commercial and residential
skip bin drop off and collection and chose Isuzu based
on his own research together with the excellent service
he received from Patterson Cheney staff during the prepurchase process.
The deck has been tailored to suit Brian’s needs and has
a powerful 8 tonne lifting capacity. After living with and
driving the Isuzu for a couple of months now Brian couldn’t
be happier.

NEW MAN TO ASSIST
GIBSON’S GROUNDSPREAD
WITH SORF PROJECT
Westar Sales Consultant, Johan Middag, is
seen here handing over the keys to a new
MAN to Gavin & Damien Gibson of Gibson’s
Groundspread. This is the nineteenth MAN that
Johan has delivered to Gibson’s over the past
three years.
The TGS 26.480 Tipper and 4axle dog combination will be put to
work carting Revive Recycled Compost to local farmers within
the Gippsland Region.
Revive Compost is produced by Gippsland Water’s Soil Organic
Recycling Facility (SORF) which has been operating for a number
of years. It has recently increased its production capacity
and is now processing more green waste from the Melbourne
Metro area. Previously this waste was placed into Melbourne
landfill sites, however with the expanding facility and Gibson’s
Groundspread’s growing demand for the Revive Recycled
Compost, the SORF is now able to recycle more green waste.
Last year Gibson’s successfully signed up with Gippsland Water
to transport the processed product from the SORF facility to local
farmers around Gippsland and spread it on their farms.
The SORF facility is currently producing large amounts of the Revive
Recycled Compost daily and is expected to gradually increase its
production capacity as the demand for the product grows.
This is the first of 3 new MAN tipper and dog combinations which
Gibson will use specifically for the SORF project - both feature
graphics and sign writing relating to the new facility.

David Jackson overseas the Logistical
Operations within 5 Ways Foodservice
and has been intimately involved with the
selection and purchase of Isuzu trucks
since their first purchase of two new
Isuzu’s back in 2001.
Today the company has over 20 Isuzus
in the fleet – and this includes the
original two models which have clocked
up over 500,000km each and are still
performing faultlessly.
“They’re a great design, comfortable and
very reliable – we really don’t have any
issues with our Isuzus, so when you take
all that into account they represent great
value for money,” David said.
“The main change over the years has
been the move to auto transmission (AMT)
models which we’ve found has made our
drivers that little bit more relaxed at the end
of the day, especially given the stop-start
nature of the driving they do,” David added.

The Apex group is an all Australian, privately owned national
organisation that has achieved considerable growth due to a
continuous expansion of its product range and by providing
stand out levels of service. The Apex Group is quietly building
a reputation of being the market leaders in the manufacture
and distribution of steel and steel building products.
The company’s major manufacturing plant is located in
Dandenong, Victoria with branches and depots right up the
Eastern seaboard.
The manufacture of metal roofing products, water tanks and
rainwater products is a key part of the group’s activities and it
was this division that Transport Manager Clint Rockman had in
mind when looking for a new truck.
“We do a lot of roofing deliveries to the Mornington Peninsula,
Philip Island and other coastal towns where streets can be
narrow and visibility constricted. Because we wanted to
mount a large on-board crane I needed a bonneted truck,
but I was also after a truck that had a good turning circle and
excellent visibility,” Clint said.
“We already had a number of Western Stars on the fleet, so I
was familiar with the product and its running gear and we’ve
always held them in high regard. So when I heard about the
new 4700 model with its set-back front axle and sloped bonnet
offering the dual benefits of excellent manoeuvrability and
visibility I quickly checked it out and subsequently ordered
one,” Clint went on to say.
The truck is used to transport roofing sheets and assorted
rainwater products such as gutters and downpipes to both
commercial premises and residential houses.
The company is heavily involved with the manufacture and
sale of rain water tanks and has its own ‘Slimfit’ range of
oblong shape rainwater tanks that provide a space efficient
water storage system.
“We’ve had the truck for a few months now and its working
out really well. We tend to have a policy of one driver for each
truck and the driver of the 4700 loves it. The visibility really
makes his life easier, whilst the manoeuvrability provides
better access and movement within tight spaces and narrow
streets. The quietness within the cab is another thing that our
driver raves about,” Clint added.
“The other benefit that the 4700 model provides is the fuel
economy. The relatively small Cummins 400hp engine provides
plenty of power for our needs but combines that with excellent
fuel economy,” Clint went onto say.
“All in all it’s just a really honest truck that suits our needs
perfectly. I’ll definitely be grabbing another one sometime in
the future,” Clint summed up.

INVOLVED IN ROAD TRANSPORT AND
EARTHMOVING PRIMARILY IN THE

When current owner and manager Nick Chapman was looking
for a new truck to fulfil an important and demanding role he
had a long list of requirements.
“The specific requirement was for a truck that could cope with
high engine hours and low kilometres in a very demanding
application. To that end it had to have high clearance, but I was
also after features such as no grease points, auto transmission,
downward facing exhaust, and it had to be Euro 5 with Adblue.
So I had a very clear idea of what I was looking for,” Nick said.
Nick admits he didn’t know much about MAN and to date had
operated other truck brands. However, following a chat with
a friend who spoke in glowing terms about the MAN product
he decided to check them out for himself and duly spoke with
Sales Consultant Tony Lamana at Patterson Cheney Trucks
Dandenong.
Tony arranged for Nick to come down to the dealership to view
a TGS 26.480 6x4 Hi- Clearance model. After checking out all
the specs, a test drive in a 540 model was all that was needed
to convince Nick this was the truck for him and an order
was immediately placed. The truck was delivered to Nick in
December 2013.
“I can’t speak highly enough about Tony at Paterson Cheney
– he was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable about the
product which made the purchase process completely stress
free – which hasn’t always been the case in the past with other
truck purchases,” Nick added.
“Quite simply the MAN ticked all the boxes – I wasn’t intending
to buy an MAN but I’m so glad I did - I’m super impressed with
it. It’s doing everything I need it to do and then some,” Nick
went on to say
“My driver David also loves his new MAN. It’s quiet,
comfortable, the TipMatic transmission is great and it goes
particularly well - overall it’s just a great truck,” said Nick.
Like many new MAN owners, Nick is also discovering a major
key benefit of the vehicle - the outstanding fuel efficiency. “In
comparison to the other European truck that we had, the MAN
is recording substantially better fuel economy figures – a figure
that will only get better over time,” Nick enthused.
The excellent fuel economy combined with the 60,000km
service intervals means that Nick can look forward to low
‘whole-of-life’ operating costs.
This positive experience with his first MAN means Nick will
certainly be looking at additional MANs for other applications.
”No question about it, I would certainly buy another MAN in
the future,” Nick summed up.

The MU-X’s automatic transmission with
sequential sports mode is electronically
controlled by the transmission control module
(TCM) and features an adaptive-learning
