Foreword
MONTENEGRIN CINEMA
Searching for a Place in the Sun...
Through the history, Montenegrin cinema is marked by many famous and prominent
authors (in Montenegro were born, and sometimes worked there authors such as Dusan Vukotic,
Veljko Bulajic, Zivko Nikolic, etc.); authentic films which easily communicated with audience
wherever they were shown; many collaborations with foreign co-producers;... and, then,
everything was put to sleep. It took time and new energy for finding the way how to establish
own film production.
The past ten years were very exciting for Montenegrin national cinema.
At the start of the previous decade, from Ministry of culture of Montenegro came
new initiative and funding plan which in short term had its results, so the new productions have
started and the films were made. In the meantime, more and more new film talents are being
educated which led to need for bigger engagement of the whole Montenegrin community.
The budget for films continually increases, and something that is important to emphasise is the
fact that in all films by Montenegrin authors the great number of talent and crew from region
and beyond is participating, which our film production confirms as inherently multicultural,
intercultural, cross-cultural product.
It was very interesting to follow the past decade in Montenegrin film, for many
reasons. New authors, new film staff; communication with own film legacy, but also the attempts
to be in balance with wider film community; establishing of the new standards in rather chaotic
circumstances; struggles with many setbacks and lack of understanding, but an enormous
enthusiasm to conquer the film, also, and above all.
Ever increasing number of foreign crews are coming to shoot in Montenegrin exciting
locations (mountains, Adriatic sea, vast beaches, old urban entities, etc.); new ambitious and
prestigious infrastructural projects are in the works; and the new Cinematography law, which will
ensure new encouraging framework for further growth and visibility, is being prepared. The films
which will have their premiere this year, and films which are in pre-production, also, announce the
decade of some kind of Montenegrin film renaissance.
We are inviting you to jointly participate in these matters.
The future is in the hand’s reach...
On the next pages we will represent you some short overview of the films which were
Montenegrin production and coproduction in the last few years, and some of the projects which
are in the pre-production phase.

Synopsis
This is a story from the Wild East. Macedonia, a small country in the heart of the Balkans, is five hundred years under the Turkish yoke. The action takes place in the post revolutionary period after 1903,
more precisely in the first decade of the 20th century. “To the Hilt” is a love quadrangle between a
cruel though romantic rebel, a merciless naturalized Turkish officer, an educated wealthy father’s son
and a lucid, spoiled and “avant-garde” European woman who has three of them wrapped around her
little finger. The film unveils a harsh though romantic story in which the eternal Macedonian cause for
own identity and independence is seen from the angle of illusion and relativity of freedom, justice,
love, happiness, sacrifice, lies and treason. All experienced with catharsis that rises up to the top. To be
more precise, all of the action is marked with the typical Balkans paradox lifted up to the level of the
undisputed philosophical maxima: “Fuck life if you are not ready to die for it”. This is a film about the
dialectical encounter between the myths and the anti-myths, a film in which legends and storytelling
face the ongoing reality of the cruel life through Macedonian history full of super historical absurd.
It’s an Anti Western, a counterpart of the traditional American Western or something we can freely
call Macedonian Eastern. This film breaks down the barriers of the space where western and eastern
civilization have intertwined for centuries.

Jagoda is a bright urban girl. Her parents are divorced, and her brother lives abroad. It is summer;
she is visiting her extended family in the countryside, seeking time and space to prepare for her
university exams. Slowly, she establishes a bond with her cousin Zdravko, who runs a farm with
his parents in the declining small village in the mountains of Montenegro, high above the sea. His
life revolves around vineyards, orchards, domestic animals and the peculiar elderly members of
the family. Zdravko has no siblings and feels pressure because the future of the community rests
on him. He is building a new house for himself but, at 39, he is still single. There are no young
women in Zdravko’s village. A flashback shows him as a teenage boy infatuated with the East German ice skater Katarina Witt. More than twenty years later, he has hardly moved on – her poster
still hangs on the wall above his bed. But there is no sign of any real romance in his life.

the world’s liveliest example of the continuity of spiritual creation. Visual narrative of this
project follows several authentic documentaries that tell the story and emphasize the most
authentic and the most prominent practices in the vibrant cultural practice of Montenegro.
Montenegro recently listed and recorded over 300 sustainable elements of cultural heritage,
therefore it has an unlimited resource of intangible cultural capital. Risk of extinction of these
valuable and compelling social artifacts, is a reality to the generations which has no capacity
to recycle its values in modern times. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to reflect the fact
that the intangible cultural heritage of Montenegro could be preserved as a cultural capital of
the Europe.

Three stories connected into one by loose narrative lines. Contemporary treatment of
archetypical scenes deals with key existential terms: love, death, sacrifice,... Quotes included
in the whole, and contained in almost every detail, guide us to an attempt of new reading of
universal themes. Thus, first story (The Marriage) tells us about the man who regularly visits the
same prostitute every night simulating marriage; traditional forms and rituals of behaving show
hollow shell. In the second story (Service) the young man, after the bachelor’s party, wakes in
the hotel and in his bed finds dead prostitute. In order to get out of the situation he will need
the service which will put his love on the greatest temptation. Third story (The Return) is, in
some way, closing of the circuit: young man who is in platonic love with, for him, inaccessible
girl, gets in paradoxical situation to be alone with her only in the moment, when she’s dead.

A music chapel, headed by young clarinettist Mirko, has been hired to perform at the Boka Hotel’s
opening ceremony in the town of Herceg Novi. Europe is facing the outbreak of an all-out war,
and its reflections are being felt in the glamorous hotel, too. Sports and architectural icon Momcilo
Tapavica introduces young musicians to the secret of hertz minute – a way to reaching a kind of
perfection. Mirko, during a life-and-death struggle, reaches the hertz minute and gets rewarded
with eternal youth. This turns out to be also his curse, for he becomes witness to and a player in
family alienation, but also in all the changes resulting from war, politics and civilization pooled into
Herceg Novi, as a metaphorical setting for the entire Europe of the time.

Documentary
The film about one generation that is born in some kind of limbo based on “bon vivant socialism,
pop-cultural knick-knack” whose quasi-safety was destroyed by the most primitive nationalism
and the most retrograde transition process. By going down the old road, in old Fica (Fiat 750) they
are trying to answer dilemma if they are, like one of them says, “the best harvest” or just their old
country’s paradigm.

Synopsis
Documentary
In this film on choreography performance, the dance stands for gesture and movement. Young
actors by gesture and dance free their emotions, uncertainly, fears, need for closeness, and they
tried to overcome the lack of communication.Did “some limitless freedom” create a special intimacy between two young actors-performers, Carmen and Petar? Motive, celebrating the Dance day,
through animation and invisible dance theater, is important for the montage finale of the film, but
the main motive became the nonverbal account on releasing the emotions... This is a first documentary film about dance in Montenegro, done by students and professors of Faculty Of Drama
Arts of Cetinje. Last sequence of the film is a street performance done in Podgorica and Cetinje

Montenegro Film Festival
of the Mediterranean
Montenegro Film Festival of the Mediterranean – MOFFEM is a biennial film event, held in Kotor
in September. The youngest film festival in Montenegro has succedeed, with its first short 2012
edition, both in positioning itself as the manifestation of special importance for the UNESCOprotected city of Kotor and in becoming one of the cultural leaders of the Mediterranean region.
Various festival segments (competition, documentary/short films, Cinemagora, Focus, Homage),
reflect innovativeness and originality in its very focus on the rich, yet neglected, auteur film production of the Mediterranean. The main festival awards include financial prizes.
The 2nd edition will be held from 30th August-6th September 2014.
