Conditions of Employment
Conditions of employment are set out in the standard Canterbury Museum Individual Employment
Agreement.
Confirmation of employment will be subject to a satisfactory response to the Ministry of Justice’s ‘Request by
a Third Party under the Official Information Act for a copy of criminal convictions held’ (required by the
Museum’s Security Policy).
Remuneration
The Museum employs a job sizing methodology which assesses relativities between positions and relates
jobs to salary bands. Each band has a scale running from 80% through to 120%, with 100% being the
midpoint which is commonly understood to be the value where the job is being carried out at a successful
and fully competent level.
Remuneration at commencement will be based on qualifications and experience and is likely to be in the
range of $35,695 per annum (pro-rated to $26,771 based on 30 hours per week) (80% of Band C), and
$44,619 per annum (pro-rated to $33,464 based on 30 hours per week) (100% of Band C).
This position is part-time, 30 hours per week, to be worked between Monday and Friday on days to be
negotiated with the successful applicant.

1. Job Context
The Canterbury Museum exists to add value to the present and future citizens of Canterbury and the many
visitors to Christchurch, by welcoming our visitors to explore the diversity of the natural world and our cultural
heritage and to make this a fun experience. This will be achieved through:

The Graphic Design Technician reports to the Exhibitions Manager (see attached Organisation Chart).
2. Job Purpose
The position of Graphic Design Technician exists to:
 design and produce ready for print files for publications and promotional material, including the Museum
website
 provide innovative graphic design services
 provide consistent graphic expression of the Museum Visual Identity
 design and produce graphics for education and public programmes.

organisational requirements. The nature of the Canterbury Museum is a constantly changing environment;
therefore this job description is an overall scope of the role and may change with business demands.
1. Museum Visual Identity by:
 designing and producing publications and promotional material which reinforce the Museum Visual
Identity.
2. Exhibition and Public Programmes by:
 designing and producing graphic material for both short and long term exhibitions at the Museum
 designing and producing graphic material for public programmes at the Museum.
3. Professional development undertaken by:
 keeping up to date with professional information and literature relating to graphic design and graphic
software
 attending agreed relevant professional or special subject conferences, workshops, seminars, lectures
and training sessions relating to graphic design.
4. Operations managed by:
 assisting in maintenance of group work and storage areas
 assisting with maintenance of electronic and hard copy filing of all graphic design and exhibition group
materials.
5. Promotion of Museum as a Centre of Excellence by:
 adhering to Museum policies and procedures, guidelines and house rules
 adhering to professional standards, practices and codes of ethics
 promoting excellent public relations by clearly communicating Museum values and objectives
 working to ensure the Museum is a responsible tourism destination

Knowledge
 knowledge and interest in development of corporate visual identity and brand signature
 familiarity with designing for print media
 knowledge and understanding of design principles for visual communication
 knowledge and interest in exhibition and display graphics
Skills
 advanced computer skills in both Mac and PC environments
 outstanding ability in the following programmes – In Design, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat
 ability to work in Dreamweaver, Fireworks and/or Flash an advantage
 some experience with basic photography and use of digital camera an advantage
