Medina Gem combines creativity and
quality to offer unique personal jewelry
By Beth Mlady
With the holidays fast
approaching, now is a great
time to visit Anneliese Nefos
at Medina Gem Company, 23
Public Square, and allow her
to take your heirloom jewelry, perhaps lying unused in
a drawer, and remake it into
a unique gift.
“Most of the time, it’s a
well-worn piece no longer
really safe to wear every day,”
said Nefos, a certified gemologist and diamontologist.
“Perhaps you’ve inherited a
ring from an uncle, but as a
woman it won’t fit you. We
put our heads together and
take the gold and the stone
from it. Then we decide
together what you would like
as a memory. I love to transform something that is dear
to you into something that
you like now. That’s one of
our specialties.”
Getting to the heart of
what someone wants, she
said, is “a journey.” Nefos
recalled an engaged couple
who came into her shop
decades ago to commission a
special piece.
“I worked with the groom
and designed a bracelet that
featured pancakes with syrup
dripping over the edges,” she
said, smiling. “They met in a
pancake restaurant. The
woman came in separately
and asked for a money clip to
be designed with the same
image. They have been back
to restore other jewelry
through the years. I was so
touched to know they still
wear and use those pieces.”
During the annual International Gem and Jewelry
Show, she mines her longstanding relationships with
suppliers to ensure she gets
the best gold, diamonds and
gemstones from around the
world. Nefos designs all of
the jewelry she offers, except
for a new Breuning line that
originates from Germany.
“It’s a very clean, very
affordable line in sterling silver, with some pieces in 14-
Times Past:
karat, diamonds or Swarovski
crystals,” she explained. “I
like sterling silver because it
is more affordable than gold.
It’s elegant, it’s classic and
you can wear it from morning to night.”
Allow at least two weeks,
especially during the Christmas rush, for a piece of jewelry to be created. Nefos
laughed and added, however,
that she and her staff “make
many miracles” to accommodate last-minute requests.
“People can come here,
and we will make a piece that
their budget allows, be it $50,
$500 or $5,000,” she said. “We
want to make your dream a
reality.”
While in the store, customers can browse paintings
displayed by local artists.
Nefos provides commissionfree gallery space for them.
During Candlelight Walk
weekend Nov. 21-23, she also
will host local author and
illustrator Dixie Frank, who
will sign copies of her children’s book, “I’m So Glad You

Saved Me, The True Story of
Ringo Star-ling.” That’s all
part of Nefos’ desire to give
back to the community and
promote art.
“I design jewelry, so art is a
big part of my life,” she said.

5:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday,

Nancy sometimes
walked the family
dog, McDuff, to the
lumber yard or
drove the family’s
DeSoto Convertible
around Medina.
“It’s fun to
remember those
times. I appreciated
all the kindnesses
people showed me
as a young lady,”
said Nancy, now living in Massachusetts. “It
was part of the small town aspect of Medina.
It was a lovely time.”

Nancy Shepard McClelland Wilson, 82,
has deep family ties to the Historic District.
She met her husband, Bennett Wilson (of
the Bennett Lumber Company family), while
visiting her grandmother, formerly a Shepard, at 314 East Washington Street.
“My father operated McClelland’s clothing
shop on West Washington Street,” recalled
Nancy, formerly from Poughkeepsie, New
York. “My grandfather, a cobbler and boot
maker, operated Griesinger’s Shoe Store on
South Court Street. I was an operator at the
General Telephone building (currently Miss
Molly’s Tea Room). My mother, Pauline
McClelland, was born in Medina and
