The Royal Canadian Artillery Heritage Campaign. Like all charities the RCA
Heritage Program supports a variety of projects from bursaries for our kids, to the
writing of our history, to the erection of a statue to honour one of our own who is truly
a great Canadian, and more besides. Please see where and how you can help.

The RCA Regimental Fund – Donor Reward Program. The Donor Rewards
Program was created to provide donors with a tangible reward in return for their
monthly donation to the Regimental Fund by receiving a “credit”. Donors to the Fund
will receive a credit at the kitshop equal to 10% of their annual donation. This can be
used as a credit towards any kitshop purchase. The Donor Rewards will accrue if not
used. Donor rewards have no cash value and unused rewards will be returned to the
Fund one year after a member ceases donating to the Fund. This program became
effective as of 1 Jan 02. The Donor Rewards Program is administered by the RHQ
RCA under the supervision of the A/Adjt. To find out the amount of their credit, the
donor can contact RHQ RCA.

The Gunners of Canada: The History of The Royal Regiment of Canadian
Artillery Volume III, 1967 – 2012. The Royal Canadian Artillery Association has
undertaken, on behalf of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, to publish
Volume III of The Gunners of Canada as the Regiment’s authorized history from
1967 to 2012. English and French editions will be published in 2017. The first two
volumes of The Gunners of Canada, The History of The Royal Regiment of Canadian
Artillery were written by Colonel G.W.L. Nicholson and cover the period from 1534 to
1967. Although a few books on some RCA units have been written for the years after
1967, there is no comprehensive history for the post-1967 era.
Volume III will describe the history of all field, locating, target acquisition, airborne
and air defence artillery units in the Regular and Reserve Force including those
disbanded since 1967. Its wide scope includes The RCA’s contribution to domestic,
NATO and UN operations, training and the impact of Unification, the Cold War,
the Balkans and Afghanistan. Artillery equipment, technology, Gunner identity,
Regimental life and personalities are all integral parts of the scope.
The RCAA-authorized Management Committee has contracted William Rawling,
PhD as the author. Dr. Rawling is a highly regarded Canadian military historian with
20 years of experience in the Directorate of History and Heritage. He has written eight
books and many articles in both English and French and has co-authored the official
histories of the RCN and RCAF.
If you served as a Gunner, or if you have a friend or relative who did and you would
like to contribute information or anecdotes about what they saw or did during their
RCA service, the Committee and Dr. Rawling would like to hear from you. Contact
the Committee through Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Doc Hopper
at [email protected], or Dr. Rawling at [email protected].
Use either address to submit contact information or a brief summary of the information
you have to offer. Dr. Rawling will follow up on all submissions.
We are now engaged in fund-raising, with a Campaign Goal of $350,000. All
Canadians can help us preserve these exciting and valuable elements of our shared
history and culture.

In Flanders Fields – Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, May 1915 – May 2015.
Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, artillery officer, physician and poet, wrote In
Flanders Fields at the height of Second Ypres, one of the most bitter battles of World
War I. The centenary of that poem falls at the beginning of May 2015. As a result of
the initiative of the RCAA and the dynamic leadership of the McCrae Statue
Committee, the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery will erect a statue to honour
John McCrae.
Design work is well advanced. The figure will resemble McCrae and show him in a
way highlighting all of his roles, with his dress as an Artillery officer and his
medical bag nearby, as he writes. The statue will show the destruction of the
battlefield and, at his feet, the poppies which are such an enduring symbol of
Remembrance of that war and all armed conflict since. We are pleased to have
commissioned renowned Canadian sculptor Ruth Abernethy, known for works such as
the Oscar Peterson statue at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and the statue of Glenn
Gould outside the CBC building in Toronto.
We are now involved in discussions with the National Capital Commission (NCC) and
anticipate that we will have authority, in due course, to place the statue near the
National Artillery War Memorial, on Green Island at the junction of the Rideau and
Ottawa Rivers, just off Sussex Drive in Ottawa. This ideal site is just minutes north
of the National War Memorial.
The citizens of Guelph, Ontario will also honour John McCrae, by placing an identical
statue near his birthplace. They will undertake a separate civic fund-raising campaign
and work closely with our Regimental committee in Guelph.
We are beginning the process of fund-raising for the statue. The Campaign Goal is
$350,000. All Canadians can help us ensure that this iconic Canadian and his work are
remembered on the centenary of In Flanders Fields.
To donate or for further information visit our web site
at http://www.artillery.net/beta/ Mention McCrae Statue in the comments section of
the donation form at the Canada Helps button.
Or mail a cheque payable to the “The RCA Fund” to: LCol MD McKay, P.O. Box
970, Guelph, ON, N1H 6N1. Mention “McCrae statue” on the cheque.
