The Sports Association is dedicated to improving the quality of life and spirit, mind and body of persons with physical disabilities through wheelchair sports and adaptive recreation opportunities. Hello Sports Association Members, Summer is in full swing, and this is our most packed newsletter yet! We have been busy with lots of exciting events, some of which are highlighted in this newsletter! This is a great time to get out and try a new adaptive sport! The 2014 Gaylord Golf Classic celebrated twenty five years of golf and fundraising this year! Over 100 golfers participated in the event, and an estimated $65,000 was raised to benefit the Sports Association! Thank you to the efforts of the Golf Classic Committee, as well as all of our sponsors! A special thank you to our title sponsor PMA, who has been supporting the program for 11 consecutive years! Also, a big thank you to all of the Sports Association members who contributed to the Golf Fundraising Challenge this year to help us meet our goal! Meet the Banditos! Thank you Mags and Gregg! GHO Tournament & Award The annual GHO, Gaylord Hospital Open, was held on June 16th at The Farms Country Club. This tournament consisted of a morning of golf for physically challenged golfers. Twenty golfers enjoyed a beautiful day of golf, and some were featured on NBC News! Our recipient of the “For the Love of the Game” Award was also announced at the GHO. Congratulations to Chris Balsley (photo below) who received this award for “exemplifying a tireless passion for the sport of golf!” This award is given in the honor of Paul Hickey. Thank you Chris for all you do for the Sports Association Golf Club! Gaylord Gauntlet The inaugural Gaylord Gauntlet was a huge success! Over 400 runners came out to the Gaylord campus to compete in this 3.3 mile obstacle course trail run! This included Shane Mosko, the first adaptive athlete to complete the Gauntlet! Shane completed the course with a team of friends, Sports Association staff and Gaylord therapists! Shane and the team conquered all the obstacles, including two nine foot walls, a rock to climb over, a rope swing, log obstacles and a waterslide! Adaptive Cycle Club Rides Have your own cycle? Join us for the Cycling Club Rides! Rides are from 5:00-7:00 on the Farmington Canal Greenway. It’s a nice, flat ride with no motor vehicle traffic. Bring a friend and let’s get rolling! A limited number of cycles are available for borrow during the ride. Call us to reserve a bike and/or to register. Please call 203-284-2772. Wheelchair Rugby Ever thought of trying Wheelchair Rugby, otherwise known as Quad Rugby or Murderball? Now is the time! The CT Jammers Wheelchair Rugby Team is recruiting players! This full contact Paralympic sport is open to individuals who have some form of disability with a loss of function in both the upper and lower limbs. Practice starts this month! Contact the Sports Association at 203284-2772 if you are interested! The Sports Association relies on volunteers to help us to run our programs! We are currently seeking volunteers for our Cycle Club Rides, Water Ski Clinics and the Benefit Cycle Ride. If you are interested, please let us know!
