S1 Workbook #1
This workbook has five (5) assignments. Be sure you have read Sections 1, 2 and 3 of
the Student Handbook before proceeding through this workbook.
Assignment #1 - VRC
Set up your VRC client per Section 2 of the student handbook.
Assignment #2 – Reference Material
Download the ZME Reference Card (aka “the cheat sheet”) from the ZME website. This
reference card was designed specifically for Memphis and other airports, and includes
RNAV departures, calm wind runways, frequencies, initial altitudes, and abbreviated
letters of agreement.
Additionally, use the following to verify and search for updates to procedures, as
necessary. http://tinyurl.com/zme-charts

Assignment #4 – Clearance Delivery Exercises
On the following pages are 12 flight plans. Practice your clearance delivery
phraseology by writing out how each one should be spoken. Also practice saying them
out loud. Your instructor will likely quiz you on one or more of these during your next
session. Note that some departures may be outdated. An example, based on Figure 2,
is at the end of this workbook.

Assignment #6 – Observe Air Traffic Control
Use VRC and login as an observer; monitor ZME controllers when online, especially
clearance delivery and ground. Also, use liveatc.net to monitor real life air traffic control,
and note similarities and differences to VATSIM. If traffic levels are light to nil, limit each
observation session to no more than one hour.
Note that Supervisors will occasionally query observers who are logged on for more
than an hour. If contacted by a supervisor, be polite and let them know you are a new
controller who is actively observing operations in your home ARTCC.
