Minneapolis Ranked Nation’s Best
Park System
The Minneapolis Park System is rated #1 in
America by The Trust for Public Land’s
ParkScore® index, finishing first among the 50
ranked #1
U.S.
largest U.S. cities. Minneapolis parks scored
•
well on all rating factors, with especially high
marks for park system investment and park accessibility – with 94
percent of residents living within ½-mile from a park or trail.
ParkScore ratings are based equally on three factors: Park access,
which measures the percentage of residents living within a
10-minute walk of a park (approximately ½-mile); Park size, which
is based on a city’s median park size and the percentage of total
city area dedicated to parks; and Services and investment, which
combines the number of playgrounds per 10,000 city residents and
per capita park spending.
History The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB)
features 251 park properties, including local and regional parks,
playgrounds, golf courses, gardens, picnic areas, biking and
walking paths, nature sanctuaries, 47 recreation centers and the
55-mile Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway.

The Park Board was created by the Minnesota legislature and
ratified by Minneapolis voters in April 1883. The nine-member
Board of Commissioners is an independently elected, semi-autonomous body responsible for maintaining and developing the
Minneapolis Park system to meet the needs of citizens of Minneapolis. This unique structure allows independent decision-making
so the MPRB can efficiently manage the park system and serve the
diverse park and recreation needs of the city.
Mission The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board shall
permanently preserve, protect, maintain, improve, and enhance
its natural resources, parkland, and recreational opportunities for
current and future generations.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board exists to provide places
and recreation opportunities for all people to gather, celebrate,
contemplate, and engage in activities that promote health,
well-being, community, and the environment.

Matthews Teen Scene Talking Circle
Each bi-weekly circle starts with saying guidelines that hold
true to the process of Peacemaking Circles with an emphasis
on respectful communication, one person talking at a time,
active listening, and confidentiality. Our circles teach our
youth how to build healthy networks of support within their
peers at each Park Center. Circles strengthen each youth's
capacity for self expression through the opportunity to talk
about difficult issues they struggle with such as peer pressure,
family issues, and responsible decision making. As our youth's
capacity increases they are able to articulate their emotions
and take responsibility for their own actions. Through the
circle process our youth also strengthen their awareness of
abusive behavior and their ability to resolve conflicts. The
Circles are facilitated by a trained Circle Keepers who is
contract with MPRB. The Circles are also attended by Youthline support staff. You must have an Active Pass to Participate.
