Discussion
•
How do HbbTV Services add value for a Pay TV
operator,
•
•
are there any issues (business, technical, otherwise) in
providing such services?
How does HbbTV Technology help providing Pay TV
services, for instance providing such services directly to
the TV, or using the HbbTV platform to add interactive
services to a Pay TV platform.
•
Again: are there any issues – business, technical, otherwise?

SAS at a glance
 SAS = Specific Application Support
 Historically defined by US CableLabs (Opencable CableCard Interface specification)
 Included in CI Plus specification (optional) from version 1.1 (2009) which enables data
exchange between CI Plus CAM (content protection device) and Host with MHP application
support
 Referenced by OIPF Volume 7 specification from version 1.1 (2009)– Authentication,
Content Protection and Service Protection – in the case of the Host supports CI Plus based
Gateway-Centric Approach
 Required by the HbbTV specification from version 1.1 (2010) if the Host supports CI Plus
(See section 11.4.1). When the Host supports embedded CA/DRM or CI Plus interface, it
shall use the oipfDrmAgent object.

How does HbbTV App communicate with CAM App?
 The HbbTV Application exchanges information with
the CI Plus CAM App by using the oipfDrmAgent API:
 SendDrmMessage
 onDrmMessageResult
 Using the SAS communication pipe, the HbbTV
Application can get user information for example:
 Subscriber ID
 Smart card number
 Subscriber rights information

Application can also be used to retrieve CAM

 This works with existing CI Plus CAM (v1.3)
26
SAS Deployment
 Most of the TV sets on the market fully or partially support the oipfDrmAgent
 CAM manufacturers and partners such as Sofia Digital and Digital TV Labs are currently
pushing the support of this feature to the technical standardisation groups (Nordig…)
 At this stage, Digital TV Labs already certifies and supplies a test
suite for the SAS resource allowing Operator to put in place a
certification regime to ensure interoperability with Hosts
 NEOTION already brings to Pay-Tv Operators a solution
combining
standard and SAS feature in its CAM as
successfully demonstrated at IBC 2014 with FRANSAT and
ORS.
 Most of our customers to confirm willingness to develop
new services based on this accurate eco-system.
 NEOTION is also able to support them with tests tool kit
