Five years old, our festival has included literally hundreds of participating musicians. When you consider the staff of the venues, the number of volunteers, the agencies scattered throughout the globe, the city managers and their staffs, our partner universities, our overall partners, our panel discussions, and of course, the attendees, you’re literally talking about hundreds of thousands of people. The question in our mind is: Why? What is the purpose of this? The staff puts in time and effort for pennies on the dollar. Together works almost all year to bring you a week-long celebration of music, art and technology. Why? We, as a community—and as a worldwide network—have an innate feeling that this city deserves to have an international lens shone on its innovations: its artists, its technologists and musicians. We believe the students and professors should have fun at the end of their term, as they come up for air. We believe Boston can stand side-by-side with Montreal, Seattle, New York City and yes, Austin, to hold an internationally-recognized festival. We believe keeping the T open later is a good idea. We literally demonstrate how allowing people to party well into the night invigorates an economy. But we also believe that to keep young people in Boston, first and foremost, we must celebrate their contributions to our creative community. We believe once a year we must take the time to recognize the innovations sprouting from our schools, the boldness in our music, the creativity in our arts and the excitement in our technologies. An event that young and old look to every year and cause them to say: “I love this city!” That event is Together Boston. And that is why. It’s fetishized in a manner that’s similar to all walks of music, sure, but that’s about where any resemblance ends. There’s a gross impermanence attached to rock and hip-hop careers – legacies dying, reviving, burning out. But in electronic lore, legacies only seem to compound. Robert Hood is proof of such phenomena. In dance culture, the city of Detroit is mythologized to no end and rightfully so. It’s birthed impactful founders, rightful torchbearers, and a recent class of upstarts worthy of upholding the burdensome tradition. But few have managed it with such impeccable longevity and class as Hood. And with a discography that currently spans into its third decade, the native son shows no signs of slowing, and is constantly refining his palate. Well, that’s not the case any longer and anyone who protests otherwise is jealous and probably a hater. In reality, the proliferation of micro-pockets of electronic subcultures throughout our nation’s biggest cities (and some of the smaller ones as well) is the foremost reason for excitement around these parts. It’s not a particularly new trend – Detroit, what? – but locales developing trademark sounds, contributing to a larger melting pot of sonic diversity, is something to be proud of. In Los Angeles, our West Coast comrades have been honing in on a sound for some time now, a hip-hop-driven sound of the underground that curiously coincides with some of the city’s defining characteristics, warts and all. Tasked with mirroring some of their brasher eccentricities is one William Bensussen, a/k/a The Gaslamp Killer. In the live arena, GLK embodies sheer maximalism. Huffing across the stage, he’s wont to connect the dots from Madlib to Morricone, from trap to traditional hip-hop, only ever pausing to thank the crowd for reciprocating his mania. He’s recently shared stages with everyone from Just Blaze to Thundercat, and his willingness to impart upon us some of his beautiful bombast is a cause for celebration. And headbanging, lots and lots of headbanging. Robert Fantinatto’s documentary is billed as a “film about the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer, exploring the passions, obsession, and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine.” And in many regards, it’s the perfect cap to our week-long program; largely because if it wasn’t for those above referenced obsessives, there wouldn’t be a Together Boston. The sound procured from those machines is the closest thing we have to an auditory calling card. To see it in action, look no further than one of Fantianatto’s featured interviewees, who will be playing live at the Lily Pad later that evening. Cambridge resident Keith Fullerton Whitman’s devotion to modular synthesizers is uncanny. To see him perform live is to witness dedication in its purest sense, perfunctory manipulation and mastery of a craft that would rightfully send most cowering. It’s a sight to behold and to hear him tell it, Sunday’s masterclass should be no different. “Every time I play it’s a one off thing,” he reveals of his mind state leading into the festival. “And even though this is a gig right 2 I DREAM OF WIRES around the corner from my house PM DOCUMENTARY SCREENING and my office, I’m still going to Institute of Contemporary Art do something specific, something // $12 special for that one show.” Sounds exciting to us.
