1. SEARCH ASSOCIATES – THE PERSONAL TOUCH Thanks for your interest in using Search Associates to further your career in international schools. This brief Q&A tour of Search Associates is intended to give an idea of the nature of our member international schools, the kind of teachers we seek, and the services we offer. Please read these three pages first. For more detailed information, go to the web page www.searchassociates.com 2. WHAT IS SEARCH ASSOCIATES? We are a practice of 16 school Heads, operating from the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, China, Thailand, Philippines, and Tasmania. We are all experienced in senior administration in international schools. Each of us registers candidates who want to work in international schools, and we act as career advisors for those candidates. We operate an online schools/candidates database, and organise job fairs. We are the world’s largest teacher placement agency, placing over 3000 teachers worldwide annually. 3. WHO IS GEZ HAYDEN? Until 2009 the Director of Nanjing International School, China (for 12 years), I have 30 years’ education experience, of which 20 were spent in international schools in South Africa, Thailand, and China. I am now the Senior Associate with Search who organises the annual London‐January and Johannesburg job fairs. I regard my main role as that of career advisor to my fold of candidates seeking international positions. I seek to help candidates in South Africa experience the rewards of international education. 4. HOW DOES SEARCH PLACE TEACHERS IN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS? Over our entire practice, we effect 60% of our placements at job fairs, and 40% directly off our database, usually by 2
remote Skype or phone interview. For the Gez Hayden office of Search, the statistic is 50% fairs, and 50% off the database. 5. HOW DOES THE SEARCH ASSOCIATES DATABASE WORK? A. Schools. Search Associates operates a database of over 650 selected member international schools, located in every corner of the World. They post their information on enrolment, curriculum, employment package, and teaching vacancies. Registered Search candidates enjoy unlimited access to every member school’s details, and can apply for vacancies posted. B. Candidates. Our registered candidates complete an online application giving their career history, qualifications, educational philosophy, positions desired. Candidates are required to ask 4 professional referees to supply to Search Associates confidential references, via a secure online form. Recruiters from our member schools have secure access to confidential candidate files, and can approach those they find interesting with a view to filling their vacancies. 6. WHAT IS A JOB FAIR? Recruiters from our member schools, and registered candidates attend our job fair, usually at a hotel during a weekend. Candidates request interviews for the vacancies the recruiters post at the fair. Interviews take place in the hotel. Schools attending job fairs come from all over the World. A job fair taking place in a particular country does not mean schools from that country or region predominate. Our teacher job fairs are in Johannesburg, Sydney, Bangkok (2), Hong Kong, London (2), Toronto, Vancouver, Cambridge MA, San Francisco, Bethesda (USA). 7. WHO CAN BECOME A CANDIDATE? Our candidates must be qualified to teach children in schools in their home country, and have experience in an independent school. We accept candidates of all nationalities. English proficiency is important. Experience of 2 years+ is preferred. 8. WHAT DOES IT COST TO BECOME A SEARCH CANDIDATE? The following fees are currently partially deferred for candidates living in South Africa intending to attend the Johannesburg job fair. After paying USD50 partial fee payment before being activated, you will be invoiced for the remaining USD175 only after you have begun your new job, after getting your first pay cheque. No job, no final fee. We charge a database access fee to candidates of 225 US Dollars. This is valid for up to three years. Attendance at your first job fair is free. Attendance at subsequent job fairs is 75 US Dollars. There is no placement fee when you get a job. We do not charge placement fees to our candidates. We charge the employing school the placement fee. The employing member school is not allowed to pass this on to the candidate. 9. WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS? Please click here to begin free application or go to any of the links to our website in this document and follow links for candidates. You will be taken to the page where you can start your application. Once you have competed and submitted this form, I review your application, and if you are considered an appropriate applicant, you are guided towards obtaining confidential references. Once you have four confidential references on file, and I have approved them, I activate you as a candidate, provided your application meets our standard. This means you can see and be seen by our 650+ member schools, receive daily email updates of all new openings on our database, and can be invited to attend our job fairs. 10. WHAT IS AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL? Our member schools are fee‐paying independent schools, teaching usually in English (some are bilingual), catering to the education needs of the expatriate community, and very often to those of the wealthier local community. The number of international schools worldwide is expanding exponentially. Our member schools are located in every inhabited region of the World. Some are located in developed countries, and others in less developed countries. In all cases, community expectations are high, and levels of resourcing and accommodation 3
are very advanced. The student body is usually internationally diverse, well motivated and well behaved. 11. WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, AS MY EMPLOYER? Schools differ in what they offer. Schools offer temporary contracts, usually of two years, renewable. This is not a back door to emigration – Search is not an emigration agency. Schools provide you and your family with flights from and to your home city (sometimes at contract start and end, but commonly each year), health insurance for you and your family, housing or housing allowance (less common in Western Europe), settling‐in allowance, good professional development funding. Small classes and a supportive collegial environment are also typical. International schools usually offer free education to the children of their foreign teachers – a perk of free private education. 12. WHAT IS A TYPICAL INTERNATIONAL TEACHING CAREER LIKE? Teachers in international schools often get the bug. Higher levels of salary and benefits than at home, greater savings potential than at home allowing domestic debts to be settled more quickly, the exhilaration of working and living in an internationally diverse professional and social context, and the opportunity to see the World and travel.… The majority of international teachers remain on the circuit for a substantial period. It is unusual to complete one contract and return home (but this is of course possible). People typically work in several different international schools during their international school career, staying at each on average from 3 to 5 years. Usually, they return comfortably to their home country later in their careers, having been able to prepare financially to do so whilst overseas. 13. HOW DOES MY SENIOR ASSOCIATE FIGURE IN THIS? A candidate registering with my office of Search Associates is with me for life. My role is not just to get you placed in your first international position. My role is to help look after your career, according to your own preferences. I am available to you for consultation and advice at any point, whether you are an activated candidate seeking a position, or a candidate placed in a school and needing qualified independent advice on a professional or career issue. Most of my candidates continuing on past their first international position return to me for assistance in securing subsequent placements internationally. 14. HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE?
