Secondary News
From the Head of Secondary, Mel Holland
A warm welcome back to the final term of the year and a special welcome to the students and families who have just
joined the Grammar community.
With the hectic pace that is life at Grammar I strongly encourage all students to keep the focus on their studies as we
head toward the end of the year. Once again, I remind Year 12 students that there is much to do in Term 4 and that any
thoughts that it is a “free run” to the end of November should be dispelled immediately.
We are well on the way to electing our School leaders for 2015. I congratulate those 17 students who have been voted
in as Prefects and look forward to hearing from the shortlisted School Captain candidates next week. Those vying for
House leadership positions will also be giving speeches to their House members over the next couple of weeks. Voting
will culminate in Week 3.
Our final Parent Teacher interviews for years 8, 9 and 10 are scheduled for next week. Information regarding this was
included with your child’s mid-semester report. Please contact
Mrs Van Der Heyden, if you have any queries regarding
appointments for the night – Thursday 16 October. Bookings can be made via Parent Portal up until midnight Tuesday
14 October.

Cultural News
From the Music Department
Term Three Wrap Up!
Term Three is always a busy term. Ensembles across P-12 joined forces to stage our annual Music Gala on the last day
of Term Three. Starting straight after school with food, drink and busking groups, the formal concert ran from 4.30pm to
late and produced over two hours of solid music performance and fantastic entertainment. Intermission saw a brilliant
dinner provided by the members of the Music Support Group and the students staged the finals of Grammar’s Busking
Competition. This was indeed an awesome night and great fun was had by all. A huge congratulations to all students
who performed and to all parents of the Music Support Group for your amazing help on the night; in particular, to Mrs
Meg Baumann who coordinated food and drinks prior to and at intermission. Great job everybody.
But wait, there’s more! Because we can’t get enough of performing music our Senior Concert band, Senior Choir and
Big Band gathered at School in the early hours of the first Sunday of holidays, and took to the road for our 2014 Music
Tour; this year, to the Fraser Coast. What an awesome time we had and so many memories and friendships made! At
the Scarness we performed at the ‘Open Mic’ session and won the event. This saw Grammar invited back as guest
artists to perform at the Hervey Bay Jazz Festival in 2015. On Fraser Island the groups had an amazing time performing
at the Meheno Bar at Kingfisher Bay Resort and thoroughly enjoyed a day long historical tour of the Island the following
day. Despite the rain and small crowd, we performed at the Palmer Resort and this brought our tour to a close. A huge
congratulations goes to all students who attended. You were truly amazing in representing the School and again you did
us and your families proud. Your support for each other and willingness to chip in and help load and reload the trailer
over and again was inspiring. A huge thank you also goes to the following: Mrs Maria Woods, Mrs Ali Warren and Mrs
Jacinta Lansky who accompanied us on the tour and who were ever so helpful throughout; to Mrs Deb
Saunders-Brugnatti who did a great job with administration; to the MSG who supplied the Tour T-shirts; and Ms Ann
O’Leary for the T-shirt design! Great job all.
Scholars Concert
Tonight, 10 October from 6pm you are warmly invited to attend the 2014 Music Scholars' night. Grammar’s Music
Hangar will be transformed with stage lighting and a cabaret setting with drinks and refreshments provided by our Music
Support Group. This is an important night for our Music Scholarship students to showcase their hard work for the year.
The concert will feature performances on a variety of musical instruments from strings, brass, piano and woodwind to
vocals and guitar and will cover many different genres. Entry is free, however a small donation to cover costs appreciated.
Congratulations to Mattahn
Mattahn was guest artist in the 'Morning Melodies' with the Buderim Male Choir and they were
delighted with his participation, well done Mattahn! Click here for performance.
Eumundi Live Winter Sun Festival Competition
During the June/July Holidays I was selected for the finals of the Eumundi
Live Winter Sun Festival Competition. I performed with two original songs
and was lucky enough to win the competition. One of the prizes included a professional studio
session in Sydney at Jungle Studios. Over the September holidays I flew down to the studio,
and during my time there I worked with an ARIA award winning producer and sound engineer,
as well as other incredible musicians. It was probably the best experience of my life so far, and I
learnt invaluable lessons about working in a professional recording environment. By Keeley
eMrgeMusic

12 to Saturday 17 January 2015 at the Big Pineapple, with the final concert taking place at the Nambour Civic Centre on

4-4.30pm . As you may be aware many in our school community and beyond have lost family members and loved ones.
This short time together is an opportunity to reflect on our absent friends, hear some words of encouragement, to share
with others who have experienced loss and to pray for comfort and hope. All are welcome to the Grammar Chapel.

GHH Spring Clean
A huge thankyou to everyone who donated to Bloomhill Cancer Help this morning at our annual
'GHH Spring Clean'. A really wonderful effort and a great way to support the op shop network of
this brilliant local charity. Many living with cancer on the coast will benefit greatly from the
proceeds of your generosity.
The next GHH Blitz is all set for 25 October. Details will be sent to students via email shortly.
Thanks for your continued support of all that SCGS is doing in this wonderful community of ours to
help those who need it most. Be sure to check out the latest news, events and photos on our GHH

P&F News
Grammar Fair
Another fantastic Grammar Fair was held on the last day of Term 3 and we want to say a big “THANK YOU” to everyone
who helped to make it such a success, including so many students, parents and staff, but particularly we want to thank
Sarah Grandison and Mel Smith and their committee who put in countless hours for this event.
It was as predicted a beautiful day and there was much fun had by all who attended. We really tried to make this the
biggest and best with lots more rides to cater to both our primary AND secondary students, as well as heaps of fun
stalls, lots of action and a food court and wine pavilion to keep your parents happy too.
The Fair is Grammar’s major fundraising event for the year and while final numbers are still being crunched we can say
with confidence that the Fair raised well over $11,000, so it was a huge friend-raiser and fundraiser success.
A big big thank you to Margot and John Hanna of Universal Cranes for their huge support of the 2014 Grammar Fair as
our sponsor of the Fireworks. We would also like to thank Aussie World, Australia Zoo, ‘Eve the Fairy’, Finn & Dash,
Pacific Motor Group, Princes IGA, Sheree McArthur Photography and Whale One Mooloolaba for their generous donations.
Volunteers Thank you Night
On 28 October, we will be holding our annual volunteer thank you night. It is always a lot of fun and our way of thanking
all those people who have helped us during the year. So please keep an eye out for an invitation to this special event.
Grammar Art Show
This has become a major event in the School calendar and as with last year’s art show, this
year your P&F is coordinating a roster of parents to assist with the running of the show on 31
October. This is an important way we can help the School to coordinate all the activities and
logistics of holding such a great night. If you are able to help please contact us through the
School’s website.
Melbourne Cup
The first Tuesday in November is synonymous with our greatest race when many Australians
take their one and only flutter for the year. The P & F will again be hosting a Melbourne Cup
lunch and Fish on Parkyn has again provided us with a luncheon package too good to refuse,
3 courses and a glass of bubbles on arrival for $65 per person. Tickets are now available at
events online, but sure you get in early as numbers are limited.
We believe the SCGS P&F plays a very positive role within the School and we hope it helps to
make a real difference to the quality of the School, both for the children and the parents. We
are always open to suggestions as to how we could improve what we do and are happy to
receive positive suggestions from the parent community.
