Mobility in the City
Freight transport
Freight transport is indispensable for the supply of goods to Berlin
and the subsequent disposal of wastes. At the same time, freight
transport is responsible for a large proportion of noise and air pollution, and gives rise to substantial expenditure on maintenance. Promotion of freight transport by rail and inland waterways, as well as
environmentally friendly management of heavy-duty road traffic, are
therefore high priorities.
Since 2009, the growth of the Berlin economy has gone hand in hand

with an increase in freight transport. Freight transport volume increased to 32.4 million metric tons in 2011, up from 30.1 million metric
tons in 2009. Rail freight traffic, in particular, is demonstrating positive

growth. The freight transport volume increased to 5.5 million tons in
2011, up from 4.2 million tons in 2009.
Most freight, however, continues to be transported by road.
