Applied Geography

Research Assistant opportunities: A limited number of our students receive funding from faculty
members through research grants in which they are a research assistant (RA). This source of
income is variable, depending on grants that individual faculty members have at any given time.
Please contact your advisor for information on possible research funding opportunities.
Recognize that the availability of these positions varies greatly and is not guaranteed.
Fellowships: Qualified students will receive funding for one year and are awarded on a
competitive basis. Availability depends on the university budget for each year and these require
that the department recommend you. Recommendations are submitted to the Graduate School
by early March; new applicants must submit application materials by 2/1/14 to be considered.
Internship/Professional Experience opportunities: There are numerous geography-related firms
in Colorado Springs that hire UCCS students. Most will be flexible with work and school
schedules, some offer tuition reimbursement, and several have formal internship programs with
the Geography Department.
Scholarships: The department offers a Women in Geography Scholarship. This is a grant
awarded on a competitive basis to encourage outstanding undergraduate and graduate women
students in Geography and Environmental Studies (GES) or in a program emphasizing women's
studies or lesbian studies to make the best use of their academic experiences. This is a one-time
grant; see your faculty mentor if you wish to apply.
Applied Mathematics

For students enrolled in the MSc in Applied Mathematics program, the Department offers a
limited number of Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTF's). A student receiving a GTF is required
to perform certain teaching duties during the academic year as stipulated by the Department.
Applied Science: Math, PhD
o
A limited number of scholarships are available each year from the Department of Mathematics
to provide financial support to students enrolled in the PhD in Applied Sciences (Mathematics
option) program. These scholarships are awarded based onthe merit and need of the applicant.
Biology
o
o
The MSc Program in Biology does not have any financial support for graduate students, although
graduate students may apply to teach a section of the general biology lab.
Some faculty may be able to support a graduate student with grant.

Business Administration, MBA

o
Research Assistant are posted on SEAN’s place whenever there are openings. These are usually
open to both graduate and upper-division undergraduate students and are paid hourly. There is
no tuition waiver associated with these positions.
The College of Business has 5 MBA scholarships for the 2013-14 year. Currently, these are
$5,000 awards. They are based on a combination of merit and need. Information about the

There is one MBA-specific student employment position in the MBA office, the MBA Peer
Advisor. This is a part-time position and is posted on SEAN’s place when there is an opening.
Communication

Teaching Assistant positions, for which paid stipends are awarded, are available in The Center
for Excellence in Communication. Graduate students also may, for credit, participate in a variety
of research and teaching assistantships with Communication graduate faculty.
Computer Science, MS
o
Master’s students in the Computer Science department can apply for Research Assistant
positions if funding is available. Teaching Assistant positions are reserved (when funding is
available) for PhD students.
Computer Science, PhD
o

PhD students in the Computer Science department can apply for Research Assistant or Teaching
Assistant positions to be awarded if funding is available.
The College of Engineering & Applied Science Department provides a vast array of scholarship
opportunities specific to students majoring in an engineering field.
Criminal Justice, MCJ
o
o
Annually, at the start of the spring semester, all MCJ students are advised of the opportunity to
apply for a general scholarship or the Murphy scholarship for the following academic year.
Teaching and research assistantships are variable. Open positions are advertised to students.
Electrical Engineering, MS
o
Occasionally, and as funding permits, a Research Assistant position will be available and must be
requested through a faculty member after enrollment in the MSEE program.

Health Promotion

Dr. Cheryl Kelly hires one or two graduate students each year to work on her various research
projects ([email protected])
LiveWell Colorado Springs hires one graduate assistant per year to work on community projects
relating to healthy eating and active living. Graduate students with an interest in non-profit
health promotion should contact Dr. Tim Behrens for information regarding this position
([email protected]).

activity courses include: Pilates; Yoga; Kickboxing; Strength Band Training; Zumba; Weightlifting;
Hike, Walk, Jog for Fitness; and Boot Camp Toning & Conditioning. Lecture courses include

History, MA

A limited number of Teaching Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to currently
enrolled UCCS graduate students in the Department of History. There will be an announcement
circulated at the beginning of each academic year for interested students. There are no
Fellowships or Research Assistant positions, and limited departmental graduate scholarships.
Leadership, MA (SAHE)

There are a few Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant positions available. Please speak

Physics, MSc

Positions as a lab instructor may be available for senior undergraduate or graduate students; if

Psychology: Clinical & Psychological Science

Work-study awards, serving as a departmental Teaching Assistant, and other positions are
available within the department. Also, some graduate students are funded as a Research
Assistant in their research mentor’s lab.
