‘Blast Resistant Building…Need of the Day’. His presentation was based on the recent

of blast loads due to extremely rapid blast or explosions was highlighted. Blasts
release huge quantity of energy in the form of light, heat, sound and shock waves.
This load when acted upon a structure pose complex situations of structural
behaviour.
Shock waves impose high pressure air travelling at supersonic speeds causing
extreme damages to the buildings. The damages and consequent disastrous effects
are initiated by the way of failure of walls.
Walls of masonry can be strengthened by using joints of rich cement mortar,
mo
plastering using rich cement mortar, reinforcing by means of skin walls and by the use
of reinforced brick masonry etc. He demonstrated the contribution to the strength
characteristics by means of these based on a rigorous analysis using latest computer
compu
software. The effects of orienting and designing openings over the walls, providing
constraints on wall to column/beam junctions were also dealt with.
